At the end of this learning activity sheet, you should be able to:
✓ Describe how heat is transferred to different materials.
II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Too much heat, light and sound are not good for us. People who are exposed
to loud noise for long periods may suffer loss of hearing. People who are exposed to
too much heat and light may suffer from the different skin ailments. Being aware of the
bad effects of heat, light and sound could enable us to come up with the ways to protect
ourselves from the dangers they may pose to our health.
The umbrella, hat and sunglasses are things we can use to protect us from the
excessive heat of the sun.
To protect ourselves from the light and heat of the sun, we can do simple things such
as:
1. We should avoid playing directly under the sun when it is high noon.
2. Let us not look directly to the sun.
3. Apply sunblock lotion when we go swimming.

PRACTICE TASK 1:
Directions: Read the following statements below. Write FACT if the statement is true
and BLUFF if the statement is false. Write it on the worksheet provided.

Activity 1: How Heat is Transferred through Air
Materials:
Margarine
Sunlight
Small plastic plate
Spoon
Procedure:
1. Scoop a portion of the margarine from its container using the spoon and place it
on a small plate.
2. Place the plate with margarine under the sunlight for 5 minutes. Record your
observations in your science notebook. And write your answers to the analysis
questions on the worksheet provided.
Analysis Questions 1:
1. What do you notice about the margarine after it was placed under the sunlight?
2. What do you think made the change on the margarine?
3. Predict what might happen to the margarine if it is continuously exposed to
sunlight for a long period of time?
4. Why is it necessary that margarine or butter should be kept refrigerated?

REMEMBER:
HOW IS HEAT TRANSFERRED?
The transfer of heat through solid materials is called conduction. There are
materials that allow heat to flow easily. We call them conductors. Metals are good
conductors. That’s why we use them as cooking utensils because heat moves fast through
the metal pan of the food. There are materials through which heat passes slowly or not at
all. We call these as insulators.
The transfer of heat from one place to
another by movement of fluids is called
convection. Fluids include liquids and
gases. Convection involves the motion of
fluids in currents. When water is heated in a
kettle, the molecules at the bottom get
heated first. The heated molecules move
and rise pushing the top molecules, which
are cold to the bottom. The colder molecules
sink, get heated at the bottom and move up.
Warm fluid rises until the fluid is evenly
heated and you see bubbles forming.
This is also true with winds and breezes.
Warm air rise, expands and cools. Cool air
sinks. Convection is the reason why we have
wind movements and local breezes.
Heat can also be transmitted across empty
space or vacuum. This is called radiation.
Radiation does not depend on the presence of
matter to transfer heat. The heat we receive
from the sun is radiant energy. Radiant energy
travels as waves through space. Heat waves hit
Earth and cause warming. Our atmosphere traps the warmth. Your house gets warm when
the sun’s waves or rays travel through a window and are trapped in your house. Heat
waves are invisible. All warm objects radiate or give off heat waves. Some other examples
of heat transfer by radiation are the heat you feel when you are near a fire source, the heat
given off by an electric heater, and the heat near a hot oven.
