Dear respected Sir/ Madam,

Statement of Purpose for MBA

My name is ……………………………………………….C, Walawwaththa, Maradana Road, Moragalla,

Beruwala, Sri Lanka bearer of Passport Number N………….. and I am looking forward to reading a
Masters of Business Administration (MBA) at the University Canada West. I have selected this degree

program because of its congeniality with my past academic qualifications, my current working
experience, my future career goals, and the global recognition of the university. In this statement, I

would like to describe the facts in-depth why I choose Canada and University Canada West for
pursuing an MBA.

My past academic qualifications

It is a fact that every moment I learn new things I find that it leads me to be my best version. Learning
made me powerful and I believe in technology and the business-oriented world, it is a great support to
face challenges successfully and seize opportunities. I learned until 2018 and the value of the results I
am getting in my life today for the whole time I have devoted to learning is immense. My academic
achievements are as follows.
Secondary Education

  I passed my G.C.E Ordinary level (G.C.E. (O/L)) examination in 2009

 I passed my G.C.E Advanced level (G.C.E. (A/L)) examination in 2012, studied in the Arts
stream, and selected to a state university (University of Moratuwa)
Higher Education

 Honors Degree of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and Management, a four

years degree- completed in September 2018 (University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka)
Being selected for a state university in Sri Lanka is a dream of many students. However, due to the
competitiveness and difficulty of this Advanced Level exam, only a very limited number of students

out of over 200,000 will get the opportunity. I sat for the Advanced Level Examination in the Arts
stream and I had the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of
Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. I see it as a turning point in my learning journey. This is because students who
do the Advanced Level examination in the Arts stream have a limited chance of obtaining a Bachelor

of Science degree rather than a Bachelor of Arts degree. But having a very high score gave me that
valuable opportunity.

Following the roots of Information Technology, Business Management, and Mathematics the degree

ramifies to 55 subjects including Organizational behavior, Marketing management, Principals of

Economics, Financial accounting, Artificial intelligence, Object-oriented programming, Operational

research, calculus, and more. In this way, with this degree, I gained a very good knowledge of IT and

business management, which are the most sought-after fields in the world.

My current working experience-Software engineer

rd
While I was reading for the degree, in the 3 year as the course module, Industrial Training I had to

have 6 months internship. From 2017 January to 2017 June I worked as an intern software engineer
at Jetwing Travels, one of the leading travel agencies in Sri Lanka. With that experience, after
completing my degree, I chose to start my career as a software engineer because I saw information
technology as a rapidly growing industry in the business world.

Since 2018 October I am working in Bhoomi Design Studio that delivers high-end mobile and web

applications for companies who look to leverage modern digital marketing strategies to grow their

businesses. When delivering the desired product to the client first I had to analyze the client’s needs,

then design, and develop the application in an exact way that client is expecting. Even though I put

the whole development process simply under those three stages, under that I had to follow many sub-
stages that involve both programming and documentation practices. I have been a part of more than

thirty projects that include both mobile and web applications developing. Most of the time the target
audiences were different and the clients’ needs were varied, so all these two years the experience I

got as a software engineer can state as a perfect one.

Why should I want to have my higher education experience in a foreign

country?

When I entered university, I understood that it is another universe with lots of different people from
various places in the country and it is not a place that only gives academic knowledge but also
nurturing me as a person with different life experiences. While doing my degree always I wondered
about other famous universities in the world. After seeing and reading about Harvard, Cambridge,
University of Waterloo, and Oxford through articles, videos, and photos I realized how small a culture I
live in and I wondered what it would be like to study in a different culture with different people at such
a university. So, that is the first motivation I got to think about learning at a foreign university. I believe

that passion for doing something is ahead of all other reasons to do it. So that passion led me to
observe what would be the advantages I can gain from learning at a foreign university while encircled
by a different culture.

Even if I am happy about being a software engineer while improving my technical knowledge I wish to

go further just not as an engineer but also attain a managerial position. The sole experience of being

a software engineer is not allowing me to be at a managerial level. That is why I understood

postgraduate degree is essential to achieve my career expectations.

Two years of experience as a software engineer proved to me that only having technical knowledge is
not sufficient to work with clients. It needs the business and management skills too. Because

everything we do it has a business perspective and knowing it can deliver the best output. Even
though my degree is in both IT and Management I understood, to work in this rapidly changing

business world and go forward than competitors, I must polish my business skills in advance. I can

show my two years of experience as a software engineer to verify that I have enough technical

knowledge but currently, I do not have a proper qualification to show my business knowledge. I saw

that the lack of academic qualifications was hindering me from competitors. That thought propelled

me to follow an MBA as a higher education option and go towards my future career projections.

My current company is all about developing software and they consider a person with technical

knowledge and business administration as an extra asset to their company. So, they also motivated

me by showing facts that following a postgraduate degree in business administration in a foreign

country can be highly beneficial. Because many of the high-level management in the company holds
postgraduate degrees from foreign countries. Therefore, I
understood how valuable is it to have an MBA in another country and I believe there will be a high

chance for me to get a managerial position when I complete my academic goals.

Moreover, many companies put a high value upon postgraduates with international experience and
Bhoomi Design Studio is not different from them. Since many of their projects are carried within a

globalized environment it is an advantage when they have an employee who already has a true
awareness of foreign culture. Besides, when studying abroad it helps to be competent in their

language, appreciate their cultures, overcome challenges of living in another country, and a greater
understanding of the world and these are the things that modern businesses look just not when hiring

but also giving promotions to their employees.

After assessing all benefits that I can gain through following a postgraduate degree and especially in

a foreign country I decided that this is the best time to chase my expectations. Still, I am young, and

this is the best time to fortify my academic background and go forward in my career life by moving fast

without stagnation and to be fit for better opportunities.

Why should I study Master of Business Administration?

Master of Business Administration is a professional degree one can have. It is specially giving

extensive knowledge of business administration that everyone can use it according to the position

they are in because every job role needs this knowledge at some point. This is not only relevant to the

fields of finance, accounting, marketing, or IT but who wants to be an entrepreneur also can have an

MBA to polish their leadership skills and knowledge of business management holistically.

To thrive in this very competitive business world many need to be a success in the job they are doing.
But to go up on the career ladder the most important thing is gathering the required qualifications as

much as can. So, I see the MBA as the best choice I can make to ameliorate my existing knowledge
of business management and tether that towards the subject of business administration. I think

subjects like International business, operations management, IT management, finance, marketing,

strategic management, human resources, and business communication which can absorb through an
MBA will be highly beneficial for me to hold a managerial position or to become a member of the
director board in an organization.
The idea of learning as much as I can do was inside me since I was a kid. Because knowing new

things always enlightened me from inside. So, after completing my first degree I wanted to follow
another degree too. To observe what degree is to acquire as my postgraduate education option I did

much researches using the internet and sometimes talking to friends who already in their
postgraduate education journey. While searching and talking to them I found that many of them have

chosen to follow an MBA. Some of them were doing it to attain a higher level in their current position,
to change their jobs to a managerial position and some of them have already held higher positions
while earning higher compensation and other fine benefits because of their postgraduate qualification.

So, all these reasons evidenced to me that doing an MBA as my higher education choice is the wisest

decision, I can take concerning my future career goals and my current education qualifications.

Even if I am well versed in technical knowledge, I do not have a potent awareness of the business

environment. So, without that knowledge, I cannot go further or be at a managerial level which is my

ambition. I do not carry in-depth knowledge of finance, accounting, and general management which

are important subjects in the MBA and most wanted if I want to hold a higher position. I have learned

them in my bachelor's degree but the awareness I got from it wasn’t expanded to a higher level so, in

breadth learning of business administration is essential to me.

As well as, many people in my home country go up in their career ladder and get higher

compensation than others by acquiring more academic qualifications because in Sri Lanka many

designations were paid by their educational qualifications. With that remark, I am certain that I too will

get paid a higher compensation package in the future once necessary qualifications and exposure are

acquired.

On the other hand, I always wanted to go beyond what I am doing now, so I was looking for available

managerial positions in well-established organizations that I can apply for in Sri Lanka. I understood

that many job positions need the experience of 3-5 years and a postgraduate qualification. As I

mentioned before, still I am young and this is the best time I can use my full capacity to earn more

educational qualifications. So, I deem my past technical knowledge, experience, and an MBA will

make me a potent candidate to acquire a higher position more than the one now I am holding.
Apart from all these career goals especially I am interested in the entrepreneurial skills I can gain
through an MBA. Because my husband has established a company named Curio Solutions which

provides software solutions to customers. It is a company taking software projects from different
clients and complete them. Still, it is at the level of a startup company but I have a long-term goal to
elevate it and make a successful business. As I see the business should be remodeled with the
aspects of finance, accounting, people management approach, advertising, and selling products and

services. I hope by sharpening these competencies by following an MBA will help me in advance to
make our business more prominent and make ourselves successful entrepreneurs when I return to Sri
Lanka.

Also, I would like to say that I am a versatile person. Because two years (2010-2012) I learned
political science, logic and scientific method and Sinhala language and literature as a student who
follows the Arts stream for the Advanced Level exam. Since my marks were at a very high level, I got
a chance to select a valuable degree that includes IT and management subjects, those were not in
my previous studying stream. Since the subjects were more sophisticated and well blending with the
current world, I selected that opportunity. However, I completed my degree successfully that was

entirely different from my previously learned subjects. Therefore, I think as my degree is not
completely based on business management and since I am a software engineer it will not be a matter
for me to follow an MBA efficaciously. Because I am a person who can take challenging opportunities
to be successful when it comes to my life desires.

To conclude, self-desire to learn a new subject and expand my boundaries of knowledge, ambition to

hold a managerial position in an organization, to have a better compensation package and observe

more lucrative career options and develop our (me and my husband) own company into a standard
level and to become successful entrepreneurs in the island are the main reasons to select an MBA. I

see it rationally, as a subject and a qualification, that can make my above-mentioned ambitions come

true.

Why Canada is for my higher studies?

All the time I wanted to visit another country but the rigorous education system we have to follow in
Sri Lanka wasn’t allowed me to make my dream come true because I was busy with learning and the

busy life after I become a software engineer. Now I have an opportunity to travel in a country not just

as a traveler but as a student. So, where is the place that I am going to choose as the destination to

pursue my higher education? It was a problem in my mind before

selecting a country to do my postgraduate studies. Earlier my mind was filled with lots of options and I

was at a vague stage. But then I understood that since I am going to another country just not to visit
but to complete my higher studies and return to Sri Lanka as a qualified person to be in a managerial

position my criteria for selecting a country must be based on several other qualities. Safety for
international students, recognition of foreign academic qualification in Sri Lanka, affordability & nature

of foreign exposure I may gain, and response towards natural disasters & pandemic were the main
reasons mostly I am concerned about while selecting a proper destination. While doing my

observation upon those facts several options came to me to choose from.

The most popular higher education destinations where many students choose are Australia, UK, New

Zealand, Canada, and USA. So, by following the trend I also searched available programs that

congenial with my past academic qualifications and working experience. By comparing found all

options related to those countries ultimately, I decided to select Canada to pursue my higher studies

specifically due to the below elaborated reasons.

Since I was a child, I have heard Canada is one of the best countries in the world to live in. Still, they

are in their higher rank proudly and I think international students also can get that higher standard of

living while they are in Canada. So, I am well relieved about my safety as an international student

because it is a peaceful country as many statistics are proving.

Canada has a top-level education that is second to none and I consider the opportunity I get to learn

in Canada will expand my learning experiences widely. According to QS Top Universities ranking

2018, Canada has 11 of the top 250 universities worldwide. So, I consider it is one of the best

reasons to choose Canada as a higher education destination.

Living cost and tuition fees in Canada made me choose it as the best country to follow my higher

education because of its affordability than many other countries. While analyzing the cost of living in

Canada excluding tuition fees and including housing, meal expenses, and transportation costs it was

visible an international student can afford them without a problem.

Canada is famous for its welcoming nature of different cultures and its democratic nature. So, I think

as an international student I also will be welcomed to the country with warm hands. As well as

because a huge number of international students are coming to Canada from all over the world, I

hope I also will be a part of that big cultural diversity and have a great experience. And
I consider Canada is best for me since I can get academic knowledge and different life experiences

while learning in Canada. So, I believe that practical awareness of diversity will be a great opportunity

for me to understand global business levels and use them in my future career goals and personal

goals too.

As well as I am all heard about the beautiful natural environment in Canada all the time and it also
one joyful reason why I chose Canada. In addition to all those facts specially in these troubled days,

because of the Covid-19 pandemic situation, I am very impressed by how the Canadian government

acted responsibly for the sake of international students.

So those are the reasons I took to my concern to specifically chose Canada as my higher education

destination over other countries.

Benefits of gaining an MBA in Canada

By concerning the brilliant education system in Canada, I encountered several benefits I can gain by
following an MBA there. As I mentioned before continuously a huge number of students wish to go to

Canada for their higher studies because the education system in Canadian institutes is dynamic,

innovative, and challenging. So, I am certain the decision I took to earn an MBA in Canada will

undoubtfully boost my career and build up my future.

Moreover, an MBA with talented students from many countries will immensely grow my

communicational skills and will give me a true awareness about how the world business is going on

and also an analytical acquaintance about the global business environment. Undeniably in Sri Lanka,

a person with such skills has high demand in every company for their higher positions. Besides, most

of all degrees from Canada are acceptable by the whole world without any doubt. Therefore, I

consider having an MBA from Canada will keep me ahead of many other competitors.

So, pursuing a master’s degree in Canada will unequivocally strengthen my capacities to achieve my

future career aspirations.

Why University Canada West?

With my idea of going to Canada to pursue higher education and doing an MBA for a postgraduate

degree, it was also a matter of special consideration as to what is the most suitable university for it.

After meeting several educational consultants and searching for suitable universities online, I selected

a few universities that could apply based on the qualifications I currently have and my requirements.

During this time, I had the opportunity to attend a seminar hosted by University Canada West at the

Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo. As the institute explained I found that the curriculum is highly

sophisticated and tailored to blend in with the modern business world, and the teaching style is using

the latest technology as well as considering the opportunity to study with students from other cultures

and exposure to a foreign environment, I decided that this is the right university for me.

Most important of all, I do not carry more than 3 years of experience in a managerial position, and my

first degree is not entirely related to business subjects but combined with IT, so although I could not

be qualified for an MBA directly, I had the opportunity to apply for it through a foundation course with

University Canada West. My overall GPA from my bachelor's degree is 2.58 and my IELTS overall

score of 7.0 (reading -5.5, writing-6.0, listening-8.5, and speaking-7.0) was sufficient to apply for the

MBA foundation course and once I complete it, I also will get the chance to follow the MBA. The
foundation course is all about business and academic writing, quantitative skills for businesses, and

economics from a business perspective and they are familiar with the subjects I have studied in my
previous degree. Because I do not have enough professional experience to take part in an MBA
directly, I consider this as an opportunity to hold but not to miss.

Another fact I was concerned about the recognition of the University Canada West in Canada. This

university is accredited by the British Columbia Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training, and

carries the Education Quality Assurance (EQA) accreditation under the 2003 Degree Authorization

Act, and hold the top-ranked in the list of universities of first Hundred in Canada. Therefore, the MBA I

get from this university definitely will be a worthwhile qualification for me.
With all of this in mind, I believe that my MBA from University Canada West will upgrade my business

decision-making capabilities, the skill to choose the best strategic way for solving management

problems including other capabilities related to the essential elements of business administration.

Why not in Sri Lanka?

I have successfully completed my primary, secondary, and tertiary education thanks to the existing

education system in Sri Lanka. But there are a few things that motivated me to pursue higher

education in a country other than Sri Lanka.

 I already have a degree from a recognized university in Sri Lanka, but the degree itself does
not give me enough practical knowledge of the global business field.

 Quality and recognition of education in foreign countries such as Canada / Australia / UK etc.

 Although there are foreign degree awarding institutes in Sri Lanka, my current need as an
individual is to experience the foreign business environment well and thereby develop my
business knowledge.

 The other thing I have seen is that lecturers who have been educated only in Sri Lanka have
not a wide range of knowledge about the global business situation.

 Lack of opportunity to interact well with the lecturer and absorb knowledge due to the large
number of students who are usually in one classroom in Sri Lanka.

 My desire to see the world and add to my life the experience of being educated in a different
culture in another country.

 The positive impact of exposure to the foreign business environment on my professional
aspirations.

What are my future goals and objectives upon my return to Sri Lanka?

Objectives in the short-run

My ultimate expectation is to complete the MBA to gain global business knowledge, be ahead of my
other competitors, and earn a good value for me in the job market in Sri Lanka. Also, upon my return

to Sri Lanka, I would like to join the same company I currently work for and due to my two years of

experience as a software engineer and the MBA I intend to complete, I look forward to gaining a

management position in there. It is a software company and since my past

excellent performance including knowledge in the business domain, business processes,

organizational culture, and nature of the product I trust that there will be a high chance for me to be

more attached to my current company when I return to Sri Lanka. (Annexure 01)

Moreover, by gaining this qualification I can climb up my career ladder and I consider this as a critical

initiation point. Because all I see is equipped with this academic and professional qualification, is

going to secure my future with better options.

Objectives in the long run

After achieving my short-term goals, my long-term goal is to focus my attention on a well-paying

position like a general manager or a director in one of the most reputable companies in Sri Lanka with

the experience gained in a management position.

And I hope my learning journey does not end here. That is, as I climb the stairs professionally, I will

get my next educational qualification, a Ph.D. This is a dream I always had in my mind. I consider

having a master’s degree will be the key to be successful in my ambition.

As I mentioned earlier, the business my husband owns, Curio Solutions, I expect to help to take it to

the next level. When we were both studying at university as students, my husband and I had a vision

to start our own business and provide employment opportunities for others. Utilizing the experience

gained from holding a management position and blending well with the business environment, as well

as the financial strength that comes from a good payout, my sole objective is to be a successful

entrepreneur on the Island and contribute to the economic growth of Sri Lanka.

An extension to my hobby

Inherently I have an excellent skill to imagine beautiful things and convert them into wonderful stories.

So, I used that skill to do good for the world by becoming a children’s story writer. Not to put my skill

in vain and mostly because it is the thing, I like to do I become a freelance children’s story writer. So,

when only I have enough time, I take my time to engage in such projects (Annexure 02). Even

though the financial profit I gain from this is low, the self-satisfaction I receive from this is limitless.

I want to inspire children’s imagination and ideas about the world. But unfortunately, in Sri Lanka, I

see that at present, sophisticated and great literary works for children are not
emerging. I always worry about this, because children are the future of a nation and literature can

influence their personality from an early age in a good way. So, not to receive any huge profit but to

do a good thing for the country and world through what I love to do, I wish to share my creativity with

the audience who deserves to see it. Once I come to Sri Lanka after my MBA, I have an idea to

connect more people to my intention and write more stories, publish them, give them it at a very low

price and help to make a more wonderful future for children in Sri Lanka.

Financial support

My husband is the other half of my life and my comrade who always motivated me to chase my

dreams by saying, “the greater the difficulty, the more glory in surmounting it.” When he got to know

my ambition to be educated at a foreign university that is the time, he was ready to support me in
every way he could. Now he is encouraging me mentally and monetarily to be successful in my career
and life goals. Currently, he is working as a software engineer in the same company I am working for,

Bhoomi Design Studio.

Already I have paid 7900CAD, the full payment for the foundation course. Total cost including one-

year tuition fees and living expenses per year while I live in Canada will be, as shown in the below

table.

Per month Per year

My Personal Declaration

I hereby declare that I have made this decision confidently, and assure that once my MBA is
completed successfully, I will return to Sri Lanka. As I mentioned I have the aptitude to rejoin my

current workplace at a managerial level or find a more lucrative managerial position in another
reputed organization in Sri Lanka. The education qualification I get in a country like Canada will

certainly propel me swiftly towards my ambition of acquiring a higher managerial position. Therefore,
while I am young, I am eagerly in need of completing my MBA degree with foreign exposure at this

stage.

Thank you for reading this and your favorable and prompt consideration of my request would be

highly appreciated. Moreover, I hereby confirm that I wrote this statement of purpose solely by myself

and the information given in the SOP is accurate and reliable.
