WHAT IS THE ARCTIC
OCEAN?
The Arctic Ocean is the ocean
around the North Pole. The most
northern parts of Eurasia and
North America are around the
Arctic Ocean. Thick pack ice and
snow cover almost all of this ocean
in winter, and most of it in summer.
An icebreaker or a nuclear-powered
submarine can use the Northwest
Passage through the Arctic Ocean to
go between the Pacific and Atlantic
oceans.
ENVIRONMENT IN THE
ARCTIC OCEAN
Away from the coasts, the interior regions of the
Arctic lands have a continental climate. The weather
is drier, with less snow in the winter and sunny
summer days. Some areas get scant precipitation and
are classified as polar deserts. Winter weather can be
severe, with frigid temperatures well below freezing.
The Arctic is also characterised by a harsh climate
with extreme variation in light and temperature, short
summers, extensive snow and ice cover in winter and
large areas of permafrost. Its terrain varies from high
mountains to flat plain, wide tundra and great
expanses of sea, snow and ice. Not just because it's
home to the iconic polar bear, and four million
people, but also because it helps keep our world's
climate in balance. Arctic sea ice acts as a huge white
reflector at the top of the planet, bouncing some of
the sun's rays back into space, helping keep the Earth
at an even temperature.
ECOSYSTEM AND FOOD
WEB
In the Arctic, there are several food chains that
criss-cross to make a food web, starting with the
sun, then producers like phytoplankton in the sea
and grasses and lichens on land. Some of the
consumers in the food webs are krill, fish, birds,
reindeer, and seals.
What do Arctic animals eat? Many arctic herbivores
have adapted to be able to eat lichen, a moss which
grows on plants in the tundra. Carnivores, however,
have a much wider diet, ranging from rodents such
as lemmings, birds, and even caribou.
CLIMATE OF THE
ARCTIC OCEAN
Arctic Winters are dark and cold, with
temperatures plummeting as low as -
34°C at times! In the Summer months,
temperatures range from 3°C to 12°C.
The Arctic, there are two main seasons
but they are far from equal: a long, icy
and dark winter lasting 9 months and a
short, very cool summer lasting only 3
months. Spring and autumn last just a
few weeks each.
