Assignment #4 (2013)

The document provides details for Assignment #4 in a reinforced concrete design course. It includes: - A diagram of an interior frame of a 5-storey reinforced concrete building, showing beam and column dimensions. - Loads and moments on a triple-height column within the building atrium, including dead and live loads. - Instructions to calculate magnified design moments for the column and design it according to code requirements. - A bonus question to redo the calculations and design without shear walls, and comment on the impact of the walls.

CIVE 4302 (Fall 2013) November 06, 2013

CARLETON UNIVERSITY
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
CIVE 4302 – Reinforced and Pre-stressed Concrete Design (Fall 2013)

ASSIGNMENT #4
(Due Date: November 20, 2013)
Question:
The following figure shows the elevation of an interior frame of a five-storey reinforced concrete
building in which the frames are repeated every 6 m. The dimensions are based on the centre-to-
centre of the beam-column intersecting joints. The beams are rectangular 400 mm wide and 600
mm deep, which includes a 200 mm floor reinforced concrete slab above (with an effective flange
width of bf = 2400 mm for each beam).

The loads and moments on the triple-floor height column within the building atrium (along grid
line 3 between Level 3 and Ground level) are given as follows:

Unfactored Dead Load:

Axial force = 640 kN
Moment @ top = 60 kN-m (clockwise)
Moment @ bottom = 60 kN-m (anti-clockwise)

Instructor: Reza Fathifazl 1

CIVE 4302 (Fall 2013) November 06, 2013

Unfactored Live Load:

Axial force = 634 kN
Moment @ top = 67 kN-m (clockwise)
Moment @ bottom = 47 kN-m (anti-clockwise)

Calculate the magnified design moments and design the given column as per CSA A23.3-04
requirements. Assume f’c = 35 MPa and fy = 400 MPa.

Bonus Question (20%): Carry out the magnified design moment calculation and the column
design in absence of the reinforced concrete shear walls in the frame. Comment on the column
design details in presence and absence of the reinforced concrete shear walls in the building.
