Augie: Good morning everyone, we are here today to discuss what Nano Technology is

(next slide)

Jared : First Let us define what Nano and technology is

The nanometer or nano is a unit of length in the metric system, equal to one billionth of a metre.
While technology refers to a machinery and equipment developed from the application of
scientific knowledge. The branch of knowledge dealing with engineering or applied sciences.

Lucky : Now that we are familiar with nano and technology, What exactly is nano science?

Well, Nano Science refers to the study, manipulation and engineering of matter, particles and
structures on the nanometer scale.

in particular, it focuses on the unique, size-dependent properties of solid-state materials.

Important properties of materials, such as the electrical, optical, thermal and mechanical
properties, are determined by the way molecules and atoms assemble on the nanoscale into
larger structures.

Mikaela : Now, what is nanotechnology when combined in the field of science?

Nano technology is the application of nanoscience leading to the use of new nanomaterials and
nanosize components in useful products.

Common examples of products that use nanotechnology are sunscreen, computers, clothes,
adhesives, and many other products we normally use on a daily basis

Augie : That’s right, It is a part of science and technology which focuses on the control of matter
on the atomic and molecular scale. This is why Nanotechnology includes making products that
use small particles that can be seen on electronic devices, catalysts, sensors, etc.

Cole : Now Let’s talk about the origin of Nano technology

The American physicist and Nobel Prize laureate Richard Feynman introduced the concept of
nanotechnology in 1959. During the annual meeting of the American Physical Society, Feynman
presented a lecture entitled “There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom” at the California Institute of
Technology

While the term "nanotechnology” was coined by the Japanese scientist Norio Taniguchi in a
1974 paper on production technology that creates and features on the order of a nanometer.
Jared : In as early as the 4th century, Roman artists had discovered that adding gold and silver
to glass created a startling effect. The glass appeared slate green when lit from the outside, but
glowed red when lit from within. Nanoparticles of gold and silver were suspended in the glass
solution, coloring it.

The early 2000s also saw the beginnings of commercial applications of nanotechnology,
although these were limited to bulk application of nanomaterials.

Examples of which were Silver nano platform for using silver-nanoparticles as an antibacterial
agent, nanoparticle-based transparent sunscreens, and carbon nanotubes for stain-resistant
textiles.

Augie : So how does Nano Technology Work?

Well, Nanotechnology is the understanding and control of matter at the nanometer scale, where
unique phenomena enable novel applications.

This Encompasses nanoscale science, engineering, and technology as nanotechnology

involves imaging, measuring, modeling, and manipulating matter at this length scale.

Nanotechnology also involves the design, characterization, production, and application of

nanoscale structures, devices, and systems that produce structures, devices, and systems with
at least one novel/superior characteristic or property.

Cole : So what’s so special about nano technology?

Well, The mechanical rules that govern the nanoworld are quite different from our everyday,
macroworld experience. This allows the fabrication of novel materials and applications that
otherwise would not be possible.

Without nano technology, it would not have been possible to formulate solutions to modern day
problems and produce different technology ranging from products, electronics, and even from
our day to day needs. Nano tech is everywhere around us, only that it is not seen by the naked
eye, but it is truly an important element that makes up our world today.

Lucky : To provide you with more information here are the different application of nano
technology with out day to day lives

Nano tech is being utilized from energy, medicine and drugs, nano bio technology, nano
devices, optical engineering, defenses and security, bio engineering, and even with cosmetics
and fabrics.
Mikaela : Infact, here are its applications in Energy.

Nano technology contributes to Energy Production for Clean, less expensive sources enabled
by novel nanomaterials and processes.

It is also being used in Batteries and Fuels for Companies are currently developing batteries
using nanomaterials.

And lastly, Nanotechnology can address the shortage of fossil fuels such as diesel and gasoline
by making the production of fuels from low grade raw materials economical. Increasing the
mileage of engines. Making the production of fuels from normal raw materials more efficient.

Jared : Not only that but Nano Technology can also be useful in the fields of medicine

For it provides new options for drg delivery and drug therapies.

it also enable drugs to be delivered at precisely the right location in the body and release drug
doses on a predetermined schedule for optimal treatment.

It also Employs nanoparticles to deliver drugs, heat, light, or other substances to specific types
of cells such as cancer cells.

And lastly, Visualization of surgery can also be improved. Instead of a surgeon holding the
instrument, computers can be used to control the nanosized surgical instruments.

Lucky : Furthermore, Nano Technology is being most utilized today for the use and invention of
nano devices for Nanotechnology hold some answers for how we might increase the capabilities
of electronics devices while we reduce their weight and power consumption.

It is being used in solar cells to trap electrons

Furthermore There is a great interest in constructing nanoelectric devices that could detect the
concentrations of biomolecules in real time for use as medical diagnostics.

Cole : As the years pass, and as our technology evolve where exactly is nano technology used
today?

Well, the simple answer is that Nano technology is becoming ubiquitous in our daily lives and
has found its way into many commercial products. There are plenty more uses of nano
technology which is not only limited to what we have discussed earlier but can also contribute to
the improvement of science and its use to our society.
Augie : So what are the possibilities of nano technology in the future?

Well, it is clear to us that there are limitless possibilities but with what we currently know

We can Make it possible to manufacture lighter, stronger and programmable materials that
require less energy and promise greater fuel efficiency.

We can even make use of Nanorobotics that can help in human tasks like architectures and
surgeries.

Or even make use of Nanosurgical field to help cure everything ranging from natural aging to
diabetes to bone spurs.

Not only that but Nanotechnology could also enable objects to harvest energy from their
environment.

This is because the use of nano tech in today's modern era makes it possible to collect,
examine, and determine more uses of it to society. Nano technology is one of the contributing
factors of growth in our economy and the vast changes in technology were made thanks to nano
technology.

Mikaela : now before we end, let us give you some facts about Nano technology

A nanometer is as small as the width of a strand of a DNA - which is itself invisible to the naked
eye.

Nanotech has been used for centuries even though mankind never realised it, until now.

Scientists are using nanotechnology to create an invisible cloak. Nanotube sheets at extreme
temperatures cause the light to bend away from objects that "disappear".

Bulletproof business suits made from carbon nanotubes cost $20,000. They are also
stab-resistant, stop 99mm rounds and have to cut into shape using a chainsaw

Nanofibers stimulate the body to generate lost or damaged cells.

Jared : That is all for our report on Nano Technology Thank you!
