Introduction : - “Kumudvathi Parinayam” is taken from 16th canto of “Raghu
Vamsha Maha Kavya”, written by Kalidasa.
Story- Kusa and Lava were sons of Sita and Sri Rama. Kusa ruled Ayodhya
kingdom, even greater than Indra, the ruler of Swarga loka (heaven) and Kubera, the
ruler of Alakapuram.
When Kusa, the son of Sita was ruling the kingdom, all the seasons (Ruthus)
were in order and better way. In that way the seasons changed and the Greeshma
Ruthu entered. The severity of heat during day time increased and the cool air
(breeze) decreased during the night times. The difference between both the times
(periods) seems to be the acceptance of repented couple, who quarrelled and realised
5|Page
their faults. (here the influence of heat prevailing equally and commonly during day
and night times is compared to the concurrence of the quarrelled couple having
repented and realised their faults)
Having much delighted to roam in the waves of the river. The Rajahamsa
couples are swimming in Sarayu. Kusa along with his
Country men, arrived at the river Sarayu, which was so beautiful having covered
with flower creepers and trees. The fragrant flowers dropped on the banks and joined
in the cool river water currents. To enjoy the cool ness in the fragrant river water,
While eagerly entering into the river water the shoulders of many anxious persons,
were rubbed to one another’s. Kusa along with all his people, entered the water of
Sarayu while shoulders of the anxious persons are rubbed crispy to one another. The
Royal female maids filled herbals in golden jars and poured that different coloured
water on Kusa and stepped into Sarayu to enjoy in the waters along with the King.
They played with the balls made with flowers, with their King. Kusa roamed in
River waters along with them, having not observed about the long time.
Kusa identified that the Jaitrabharana, given by his father Rama, which was
given as blessing from Agastya Maharshi to Rama, fell in the river. He ordered to
call the swimmers to search the lost ornament.

As per the orders of the king Kusa, the swimmers searched seriously, but they
could not find the ornament. They told the king that they searched every inch of
deep bottom parts/areas of the river. But the ornament was not found. They
said/opined that perhaps, the snake king Kumuda might have taken the ornament.

Introduction of the poet: - The present lesson ‘‘Vikramankasya Audaryam” is
extracted from the Kavya named “Vikramankadeva Charitam”. Written by Sri
Bilhana mahodaya.
Important parts of lesson: 1. Ahvamalla liked to give the kingdom/empire to
Vikramaditya. 2. Vikramaditya disliked to have the kingdom. 3. The discussion
between Ahavamalla and Vikramaditya. 4. Vikramaditya requested his father to give
6|Page
the kingdom to his elder brother Somadeva. The father appreciated the generosity
of Vikramaditya. These are the important points of the lesson.
Ahavamalla liked to give the kingdom/empire to Vikramaditya: The king
Ahavamalla ruled the Karnataka rajya in south India. He had three sons namely
Somadatta, Vikramaditya and Jayasimha. Among them, the second son
Vikramaditya learnt many arts and royal education and got best knowledge.
He learnt many warfare skills also became expert. He was disciplined and
obedient to elders. Having known the efficiancy of second son Vikramaditya, the
father Ahavamalla wanted to give the responsibility of the kingdom to Vikramaditya
and he informed his decision to Vikramaditya.
Vikramaditya did not like to have/get the kingdom: -Vikramaditya came to know
the decision of his father and said “Oh respected father, you wanted to give the
kingdom to me, because of your love and affection towards me. But as per the royal
constitution the eldest son of the king is eligible to rule the kingdom. I am your
second. So give the kingdom to the eldest brother Somadeva, in my place.”
The discussion between Ahavamalla and Vikramaditya: “I have to respect your
decision. But the riches and money are available to the persons, who possess the
quality of sacrifice. I will possess all the riches by your blessings. We have to
follow the rules of the constitution. Unless, the people of the kingdom may have bad
opinion on us. So please retain the thought of making me prince, in your heart only.

Vikramaditya asked his father Ahavamalla to give the kingdom to Somadeva:

“If you are the king and the elder brother Somadeva is prince. I will follow both of
you in all the matters and take care of the responsibility of the rule of the
Kingdom. For this the Lord Chandra Shekhara, Shiva is role model to me. As per
the constitution, the elder son Somadeva has to inherit the kingdom. But, if I become
the prince, without having experience and eligibility, how can I look the ashamed
face of my elder brother. If I accept the kingdom, I myself, would be destroying
and disrespecting the greatness of our great dynasty.

The father appreciated the generosity of Vikramaditya: The father observed the
pious/generous nature of Vikramaditya and said, “Oh my son, though you are

God. Though I have many sons, my fame enhanced because of you only.
Oh my son please accept my words. Our Chalukya Rajya Lakshmi will be
glowing for a longer time. Our Samantha kings will praise my Greatness without
having any bad impression.” Vikramaditya heard the words of his father and said
with a smile, “Oh father, I will protect the great fame inherited from our
ancestors. The eager wish to possess the kingdom should not spoil the everlasting
good fame.”Thus Vikramaditya expressed his generosity.

Then Hiranyakashipa got angry and said, “Dear son, you are disobeying your

a great sin. If you don’t stop adoring Srihari will break your head with the mace. I

Listening to the words of his father Prahlada replied with pleasant mind “Oh

Hiranyakashipa became very angry and said, “Oh fool! where is that timid

Later Hiranyakashipa hit the pillar with his mace. Immediately the very

Introduction of poet :- The lesson “Somadatha Charitham” is extracted from a
book Dasakumaracharitham. Written by great poet Dandimahakavi.
Starting of story: -Somadatha met Rajavahana in Mahakala kshetra and he began
to say the story, “Oh king, I was searching for you in the forest. As I was thirsty I
drank water in the tank. There I found a diamond lying on the land. When I was
taking it with me, I felt it was difficult to travel in the hot whether. I saw an old
damaged Lord Shiva temple there. So I entered in that temple to take shelter.
There, I saw an old man along with few boys. I asked him, ”Oh ! father
/sir!who are you?”. “Oh great man! To feed these orphan kids, is I have been

begging in this thick forest.” Hearing these words, I asked him, “Oh! Man! to which
kingdom this area belongs? Who is the ruler of this area?”. Then he answered to
my question, “Oh gentlemen! Veerakethu is the king/ruler of this
kingdom. Mattapala is the king of Lalatarajya. He wanted to marry the daughter of
Verrakethu, the king of this kingdom. So he expressed his wish to Veerakethu.
But Veerakethu did not accept to it. So Mathapala invaded on Veerakethu, along
with his army forces. So Veerakethu was afraid of and gave his daughter to
Matthapala.
Matthapala wanted to marry her in his country, itself. So he started with her to his
country. On the way, he stopped journey for hunting. Manapala was appointed as
security to the daughter of Veerakethu. He was waiting for a chance to fight
against Mathapala, as he insulted king Veerakethu. “After hearing these words, I
gave the diamond to the old Brahmain. I fell asleep immediately, as I was so tired
of journey.

I woke up from sleep due to some disturbance (sound). The old man showed me to the
soldiers and said, “He is the thief.” The soldiers caught hold of me and put in the
jail. They said to me, “All the prisoners are your people only.”
  
I was surprised and said, “Who are you? Why are you here?” They said, “Oh
king! As per the orders of Veerakethu’s minister Manapala. We entered into the
royal mansion of Mathapala, through a tunnel, in order to kill Mathapala, the king
of Lalatadesa. But he was not there. So we stole the available golden ornaments and
diamonds and entered into the forest. The next day, the king’s attendants observed
us.
They checked the gold and diamonds available with us and found that a
diamond was missing. So, they arrested and imprisoned us here. “After hearing their
words I understood that the missed diamond was found to me and I gave the same
to the old man. I told them that I was searching for you. I had some conversation
with them. I was friendly with them. In the midnight I broke their chains. I broke
my chains also. We came out of the prison. We took the swords etc from
the sleeping security at outside. We escaped from royal army. We entered into the
tent of Manapala. Then, Manapala ascertained about me through his servants
honoured me.
The next day, the royal attendants, sent by Mathakala reached
Manapala. They said, “Oh Minister, the thieves entered into my mansion through a
tunnel and robbed the treasure. Now they entered in your kingdom. So you hand

over them to me. Unless, you will be in trouble,” said harshly. On hearing those
words, the eyes of Manapala turned red with angry. He said,”Who is king
Latadesa? What is the friendship with him? What is the benefit from that evil
person, again?” Saying so, he frightened them.

Mathakala was angry. So, along with few soldiers he went to fight with
Manapala. Then, Manapala prepared for battle and he was ready to fight against
Mathakala. I also wore fighting shield. I took warefare material given by him. I
stepped on a chariot driven by a best chariot driver. I prepared and started
for battle. I drove my chariot nearer to the enemy. I jumped over the chariot of
Mathakala and cut down his head with the sword.

The Minister felt happy about the killing of the enemy and he honoured me
greatly. Veerakethu heard it and appreciated me. On an auspicious day, he gave
me his daughter in marriage. Later I took responsibility as a prince. I cooperated
with him in his rule. I have been living luxurious life along with my wife.

Though I have been rich and luxurious, I am worried in my heart for living away
from you. At that time, a great sage saw me and said, “Soon you will meet your
friend and you will be happy.” After hearing these words I felt happy. I came here,
along with my wife, to worship Paramashiva, the Mahakalakshetranivasa. I came
here and with the blessings of Mahashiva I could meet you.” Thus Somadatha
narrated about himself to Rajavahana.

Introduction:- The present lesson “Bhrathruvatsalyam” is written by
Banamahakavi. Extracted from Harshacharitham.
Bandi meets Harshavardhana:- Once Bandi the minister of Harshavardhana came
on a horse, who was in dirty clad, and met the king. Harshavardhana enquired him,
who threatened his sister Rajyasree.

There he met Nirghatha who was well aware of the complete forest. The nephew of
the Tribal senapathi Bhookampa. In his enquiry Nirghatha directed him towards
Divakara mitra- a Buddhist monk. Then Harshavardhana asked his help to reach the
Buddhist monk.
Harshavardhana meets Divakara:- Harshavardhana reached the place of
Divakara mitra. Surprisingly he was the childhood friend of late Grahavarma spouse
of Rajyasree. As soon as he reached there, Divakara mitra received him with a warm
welcome.
Harshavardhana stated him that his sister lost her family killed by enemies and she
escaped from jail and entered the Vindhya forst and asked Divakara mitra whether
he knew the where abouts of her. At that juncture a young monk reached there and
hurriedly reported, that a young woman was trying to commit suicide by jumping
into fire and also hurried him to save her.

Introduction: The present lesson “” is an extract from first part of
“samskrutha sathaka” written by the great scholar padma sastry.

Kesara simha’s family:- Once upon a time there was a farmer in a kingdom named
Kashmira. He had a son named Kesara Simha. The livelihood of the family was
raising cattle and selling fruits. Kesara Simha’s grandmother was interested in
nourishing and protecting the trees. She used to protect the trees from the cattle and
snow by covering with gross. Whenever Kesara Simha cut the branches of the trees,
his grandmother was saddened. She told him that she had paid equal attention and
affection towards for grandson and trees.

Reply of Kesara Simha:- Kesara simha expressed his dissatisfaction with his
grandmother that she was selling good fruits and giving him only the left over part
of the birds eaten fruits. Grandmother replied him that the fruits were inadequate to
fill their stomach. So she decided to sell the fruits to purchase food grain. She also
assured him that she would stop selling the fruits as soon as he become young and
energetic to produce grain.

If he desired to eat fruits, she asked him to plant some more trees which would yield
flowers, fruits, shade, wood and it would also please mother earth. Kesara Simha
admired his grandmother’s intention and began to help her in planting and
nourishing the trees . Kesara Simha was deeply saddened by grandmother’s death
when he was sixteen years old. Her memories made him cry.

Dream of Kesara Simha:- Kesara Simha cried loudly in his dream by holding his
grandmother. She consoled and told him that she didn’t die but changed her body as
it was old. She looks so young . He requested his grandmother to come back home
as he was feeling lonely. She refused to come back and suggested him to plant more
trees which would help him to forget her.
Second Dream :- The following night , grandmother appeared with two young
angels in his dream. She gave him fruits in a silver plate. He ate fruits and exclaimed

that he had never tasted such delicious fruits previously and woke up. As the days
passed by he earned money by selling fruits.

Third Dream :- After many days , grandmother gave her appearance in his dream
on a white throne in white dress. She appreciated him for planting more trees . She
also told him that diseases would not be prevailed in the village. Kesara Simha told
his grandmother that he hadn’t planted herbal (medicinal) plants and asked her how
could diseases be prevented ? Grandmother replied him that the trees which were
planted would give fresh air for good health.
Encourage of Kesara Simha:- Grandmother clapped her hands two angles
appeared there. She instructed them to take her grandson on a tour to green city and
white mountain. Two angels clapped and white chariot with white horses appeared
immediately. On the way , he saw rivers with fresh water, snow covered mountains
and trees with full of flowers and fruits, Kesara Simha enjoyed his tour.

Message of Grandmother:- Grandmother focused the importance of the trees in

the nature. The trees would give fertile soil, fresh air and water. Deforestation would
increase the temperature. Snow would be melt, seas cross shore and drown the earth.
The careful study and keen observation is required to know the consequences in the
environment.
Conclusion:- Kesara Simha saluted his grandmother and made gardening as his
routine work.
