6. OPERATION MODES OF THE UPS

6.1 UPS System Block Diagram

Figure 6-1: UPS System Block

 Input Isolation Transformer (Electricity model general configure);

 Blocking Diode (Electricity model general configure);

 AC Output Breaker (Option) and Maintenance Bypass Breaker (Option).

6.2 Operation Modes

6.2.1 Normal Operation Mode

Under the normal operation mode, the AC output power comes from AC utility input

and passes through AC/DC rectifier; DC/AC inverter and static transfer switch to supply

the electric power to the load.

Figure 6-2: Normal Operation Mode

27
6.2.2 Static Bypass Mode

When the inverter is under the abnormal conditions, such as over temperature, short

circuit or overloaded and exceed the inverter’s limit, the UPS will automatically switch

to bypass mode. The load is supplied by standby source via bypass without any

interruption.

Figure 6-3: Bypass Mode

6.2.3 Back-up Mode

When the AC utility power or the rectifier fails, the battery system immediately feed the

inverter instead of the rectifier. During this course, the output will continue to supply

the load without any interruption. Therefore, the load connected to the output is

protected.

Figure 6-4: Back-up Mode

28
6.2.4 Maintenance Bypass Mode

 Only for the UPS who matching the maintenance bypass breaker.

During the maintenance and repair work, the user can switch the UPS to operate under

the “Maintenance Bypass Mode”. The AC output will not be interrupted during the

switch procedure. And the maintenance bypass loop can insure the continuously power

supply to the load when the standby source is normal.

Figure 6-5: Maintenance Bypass Mode

6.3 Hot-Standby System (Option)

A hot-standby UPS system basically consists of two (or more) single UPS units which

operate independently of each other. Any one unit can be feeding the load at any time.

 Host UPS reserve power from slave UPS output power.

 All units are continuously in operation; but only one is supplying the load, but only

one is supplying the load, at any one time.

 In case of a failure in the unit currently supplying the load, another unit is ready to

take over the load without an interruption on the output side. The load is still

supplied with conditioned and stabilized power.

 The load is supplied by the static bypass, only if there is no inverter ready in the

system to take over the load.

29
Figure 6-6: Hot-Standby System Mode

30
6.4 Parallel Redundant System (Option)

N + X is the most reliable power supply structure, N on behalf of the total UPS load

minimum required number, X represents the number of redundant UPS, that is, the

system can withstand the failure at the same time the number of UPS. N + X is the best

way to the use of high reliability for the occasion. This ensures clean and conditioned

power supply to the connected load even during the failure of any one UPS unit. The

electronic parallel operation device integrated in each individual standard unit ensures

uniform distribution of the connected load to the individual units at any time and

under all operating conditions.

 Parallel redundant system uses the advanced mode, and has more reliability and

stability

 Two host units will be distributed 50% of the connected load under the normal

operation mode.

 The UPS has strong anti-interference ability.

 The users can first start-up any one of the two units without any complicated

commissioning and calibration.

 Parallel redundant systems can operate under the poor environment.

 The UPS has intelligence procedure; therefore any operational mistake made by the

user will cause no harm to the unit.
