Book1 5 8CircularMotion

1. Circular motion occurs when a force acts perpendicular to an object's motion, causing it to travel in a circular path. 2. The speed increases if the force increases with mass and radius held constant. The radius decreases if force increases with mass and speed held constant. An increased mass requires an increased force to keep speed and radius constant. 3. Uniform circular motion describes an object moving at a constant speed in a circular path. It is constantly changing direction due to a net inward force directed toward the center of the circle.

4 Circular motion
1 Describe, qualitatively, motion in a circular path due to a force perpendicular to the motion as:
(a) speed increases if force increases, with mass and radius constant
(b) radius decreases if force increases, with mass and speed constant
(c) an increased mass requires an increased force to keep speed and radius constant

Uniform Circular Motion

05 or
 A uniform circular motion can be described as the motion of an object in a

zo
circle at a constant speed.
 As an object moves in a circle, it is constantly changing its direction.
 At all instances, the object is moving tangent to the circle. Since the
an
direction of the velocity vector is the same as the direction of the object's
motion, the velocity vector is directed tangent to the circle as well.

4
 An object moving in a circle is accelerating. Accelerating objects are objects
33 d M
which are changing their velocity - either the speed (i.e., magnitude of the
velocity vector) or the direction.
 An object undergoing uniform circular motion is moving with a constant
speed. Nonetheless, it is accelerating due to its change in direction.
03 shi

 The direction of the acceleration is inwards.

01
 The final motion characteristic for an object undergoing uniform circular
motion is the net force.
 The net force acting upon such an object is directed towards the center of
Ra

21

the circle. The net force is said to be an inward or centripetal force.

 Without such an inward force, an object would continue in a straight line,
never deviating from its direction.
 Yet, with the inward net force directed perpendicular to the velocity vector,
Sir

the object is always changing its direction and undergoing an inward

acceleration.

• Velocity is a vector quantity, and the velocity of an object is its speed in a given direction
• When an object travels along a circular path, its velocity is always changing
• The speed of the object moving in a circle might be constant - that is, it is travelling the same
distance every second
• However, the direction of travel is always changing as the object moves along the circular path
• This means that an object moving in circular motion travels at a constant speed but has a
changing velocity
• The image below shows an example of a famous object that moves in a circular path with a
constant speed but changing direction:

at a constant speed of about 7660 m/s but is always changing direction

• If the force continues to act at 90 degrees to the motion, the object will keep
Sir

changing its direction (whilst remaining at a constant speed) and travel in a circle
• This is what happens when a planet orbits a star (or satellite orbits a planet)
The Moon is pulled towards the Earth (at 90 degrees to its direction of travel). This causes
it to travel in a circular path

The force needed to make something follow a

circular path depends on a number of factors:
• The mass of the object
o A greater mass requires a greater force
 when the speed and radius are constant
o The speed of the object
 A faster-moving object requires a greater
force when the mass and radius are constant
o The radius of the circle
 A smaller radius requires a greater force to keep the speed and radius
constant
