Group project (20%)


Details

Fall 2023

Total Marks __/50

The group project assignment will prepare you to analyze data and solve real-life
business problems using Microsoft Excel as a tool. It will also challenge you to
use critical thinking and analysis to find efficient and effective solutions to real-
world situations.

You will prepare an Excel Workbook based on an existing organization (e.g.,


Royal Bank, Apple, etc.) of your choice analyzing and presenting company
information such as inventory, HR, sales and revenue, budget, financial analysis
and forecasting.

Key Deadlines:
Group Formation due date: Week 09
Company selection due date: Week 10
Project due date: Week 13

Marking out of 20%: Will be done as a group (15%) and individually (5%)

Forming a group:
➢ Number of members in each group – 4
➢ Pick a group coordinator
➢ All the email communication with me will be done by the
coordinator ONLY. No one else from the team should email me.
➢ Send me your names and email ids of all your group members to
confirm your group
➢ The students who don’t have a group by Week 10, will be placed
randomly in a group

How do I do the project assignment?

The following steps will guide you through the process of completing your project
assignment.

• Select a company
o Each group will get to select a company on a first-come-first-serve
basis
• Collect relevant current data and examine the data
• Design the user interface (the worksheets)
• Develop the worksheets
• Test and debug the completed application
• Submit your work through the Canvas – Submissions to be made only by
the group coordinator

Specifications for your workbooks/worksheets

1. Include at least 8 worksheets, 2 marks per worksheet __/16


o 2 worksheet per person (individual grades will be affected for the
worksheets that are not up to the mark)
2. For each worksheet, include a “purpose” and “conclusion” __/4
3. Include a cover/table of content and a reference/citation worksheet __/2
o Make sure to mention the names & student IDs of all the group
members on the cover worksheet
o Each student must mention their names on the worksheets that
they worked on in the top-left corner of each sheet.
▪ For example: If Shivangi worked on Sheet 1 and Sheet 2,
her name will be put in cell A1 of both the sheets. (this will
help in individual grading).
4. Include at least 15 Excel techniques/functions learned in class. i.e., 1 mark
per application __/15
5. Overall presentation (formatting, degree of difficulty, appropriateness of
techniques used, etc.) __/10
6. Submission of project topic by due date __/3

Examples of Excel techniques/features include the following (they are NOT


limited to only these, this only an example):

• Include 4 different type of charts (module 1)


• Include 3 complex calculations using multiple operations and parentheses
(module 2)

• Use SUM, AVERAGE, MAX, MIN and COUNT functions (module 2)
• Conditional formatting (module 2)
• What if analysis (module 3)
• Goal seek (module 3)
• Freeze rows/columns (module 3)
• IF functions (module 3)
• Data table (module 4)
• Use a FINANCIAL FUNCTION, i.e., PV, FV or PMT etc. (module 4)
• Amortization table (module 4)
• Protecting worksheet with a password (module 4)

And many more learned throughout the semester!!

Make sure to indicate on the spreadsheet what functions are being used,
so that I won’t miss it!

The work should be properly referenced (i.e., where are you getting your
numbers from?). Include a web address, the date information was
retrieved.

Your worksheets must be substantially different from the worksheets found


in-class exercise or MindTap projects. In other words, your spreadsheet
must be original.

Finally, BE CREATIVE!
