Demonstrate your understanding of Jean Chall’s model by justifying how the given “I Phrases” provided for each
stage is descriptive enough of what goes on in the different stages of reading development.
Stage of Reading I Phrase Equivalent Explanation
Development
Pre-reading I Want In this “I Phrase” equivalent, it tells us that this stage of pre-
reading describes the feeling of a child, from birth to age 6 that
he/she wanted to read in order to understand everything in the
world. This stage starts when the child is exposed to listening to
bedtime stories read by their parents and this is until they
actively learn to read.
Initial Reading I Start This “I Phrase” equivalent describes the stage of a child when
he/she is 6-7years old, starts learning letters and associates them
with sounds. As stated, it is the “start” that a child will actually
read and understand the letters and decode it using sounds.
Confirmation & Fluency I Improve In this “I Phrase” equivalent, it tells us that this stage of
confirmation and fluency describes that the child, aged 7-8, is
able to read and understand simple stories and is practicing
reading to increase fluency. It is the stage where the information
learned on the past stage is confirmed by using decoding
language.
Reading for Learning the I Acquire In this “I Phrase” equivalent, this stage tells us that the reader,
new now aged 8-14years old, is using his//her skill in reading to gain
ideas and obtain new knowledge, which could be useful for
personal use and everyday life, just like how is it essential for
reviewing for exams, studying in school and finding research
topics. These information could be acquired through making and
answering questions, writing and discussions
Multiple Viewpoint I Explore This “I Phrase” equivalent describes the reader, aged 15-18,
uses his/her skill of reading and understanding as exploring
different perspectives to be aware of the issues in our modern
world. These perspectives or viewpoints allows the reader to see
different views about a certain topic and create opinions based
on the data reviewed.
Construction and I Decide This “I Phrase” equivalent describes the reader, aged 18 years
Reconstruction old and above, uses his/her skill of reading and understanding as
a form of enhancement to create and develop a new schema by
reading different kinds of relevant reading materials. These
kind of reading is for mature readers who should know and
decide what to read and not to read to achieve their goals in
reading. These are essential in summarizing data, to
comprehend, to create texts and for writing research papers.
