| SUBJECT: Differential Equations (MA-106) (Credit Hours: 3-0-3) | Pre-requisite: MA-110 \ Text Book: “Advanced Engineering Mathematics", Erwin Kreyszig, John Wiley and Sons, (10% f Edition), | Reference Book(s): 1, “Elementary Differential Equations’, Earl D. Rainville, Phillip E. Bedient, Prantice- Hall, (8 Edition). 2. “Differential Equations with boundary-value problems", Dennis G. Zill and Michael i R, Cullen (8 Edition), | course Aim: The main purpose of this course is to prepare the students to apply ordinary differential equations to their respective branches of engineering. To illuminate the significance of differential equations, maximum emphasis is to be laid on their applications to physical sciences and engineering. ‘| Course Catalogue: Definition of a differential equations, Classification of differential equations by type, order and linearity, Separable differential equations, exact differential equations, integrating factor, linear ordinary differential equations of order one or higher, homogeneous and non-homogeneous differential equations, Bernoulli equations, Euler-Cauchy equations, method of undetermined coefficients, method of variation of parameters, Power series method, Solution of ODEs by Laplace Transform, Integral Equations, Convolution Theorem, analyzing the nature of PDEs as elliptic, parabolic or hyperbolic, Solution PDEs using separation of variables method . | Applications of first order and simple higher order differential equations: © The Suspension Bridge Hanging Cables + Heating and Cooling * Motion of a Particle in a Resisting Medium ‘+ Mathematical Modeling of Mechanical Vibrations i. Free Vibration—Complementary Solutions i, Forced Vibration—General Solutions + Applications of the Laplace Transform i. Response of a Single Degree-of-Freedom System ii, Beams on Elastic Foundation Course Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Define the basic concepts about Ordinary Differential Equations, e.g, How ODEs arise in physical world, solution of an ODE, order, degree, linearity, homogeneity of an ODE, Initial value problems, general and particular solutions. 2. Explain different types of ODEs, eg. separable, exact, linear, Bernoulli, homogeneous ODEs. stage 1of3 3. Use an appropriate method to solve an ODE, eg. finding integrating factor, reduction of order, method of variation of parameters, method of undetermined coefficients, differential operator, Power series method and Laplace Transform. . Construct the problems in mechanical and electrical systems as an ODE and apply the technique learned to find the solutions of these problems. .
