Name: Christen Coaker Subject: Tennis Grade:

Length of Lesson in Minutes: 20 minutes

Louisiana State Standard(s): Write the whole standard and/or GLE and give the address.
(Retrieved from LADOE website)

● Student standard for Tennis- 1.HS1-3: Demonstrate competency in movement skills in at least
one physical activity (yoga, jogging/running, weight training, etc.) that helps improve health-related
fitness.

The standard will revolve around the sport of tennis.

Lesson Objective(s): Can be written as The Learner will... or I Can statements. Objectives MUST
be measurable. You may not use verbs such as know, learn, understand. You must state those in
measurable terms such as: TLW demonstrate....... (If your objective is performance based, add a success

out of 5 tries). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCvBypIX9Do

I can demonstrate competency in tennis.

I can participate in an activity that improves health.

Important Lesson Vocabulary: List important vocabulary/academic language students will learn in
lesson. Include definitions. Only 5

Coin toss- Determines who will serve first.

Serving faults- A player tosses the ball into the opponent’s service box diagonally. They
get two chances to serve and if they miss the serve, they lose the point.

Deuce- When the match is tied it is called Deuce

Tiebreakers- If a match is tied, players are forced to decide the winner through a
tiebreaker.

Flat serve- A flat serve is hard and powerful, making it ideal for a first serve in a tennis
game.
Sequence of the Lesson

1. Bell Ringer: What independent work will your students be doing while you are greeting students and
taking attendance? (no more than 5 min.)

While taking attendance and greeting students the students will begin to stretch and get
ready for the activity today. The students should begin to engage and prepare for tennis.
The students will reflect on what they know about tennis, if anything and I will ask when
everyone is settled. The students will also take a pre-test.

2. Standards and Objectives: How will you display and communicate standards and objectives to
students?

I will announce to the students that today they will begin to learn the game of tennis and will have
to participate in this activity that improves health. The students will be expected to participate and
engage in the lesson.

4. Anticipatory Set/Hook: How will you stimulate students’ interest and engagement in the

lesson? How will you make the lesson purposeful, relevant, and fun for the students?

I will begin by asking the students what they know about tennis as well as if any students
have ever played tennis. This will give me a baseline of how much the students know before
beginning to teach how to play tennis. I will make this lesson purposeful by making sure
the students understand that this game improves health and keeps them active while also
having fun.

5. Set Behavioral Expectations: Clearly state and explain management strategies and expectations
for the lesson.

Students are expected to participate and engage in this lesson. Students will be attentive during the
lecture of this lesson, while I am explaining tennis and how to play. Then, the students will be active
and participate in playing tennis.

6. Content Knowledge: Based on lesson objective(s), what content will be presented and
how will you present it? Include the content knowledge being taught and the mode of
delivering the content to the students. (ex. Include PowerPoint, reading passages, video
links, or any other mode of delivering instruction) Delivery cannot just be auditory.
Include any handouts and/or worksheets if applicable.

After the students explain to me what they know about tennis I will begin by explaining
the history of tennis as well as the basics of playing tennis for the interactive part of the
lesson. I will explain that tennis is a game played with two opposing players or teams,
which are singles and doubles. Players use rackets to hit a tennis ball (having a specific
size, weight) to bounce the ball over the net. Tennis is played on a rectangular court. One
person must serve the ball to the other side of the court and the opposing side must hit it
back to the other side. The ball cannot be hit twice in a row by the same person. I will
also explain the following vocabulary for the students:

Coin toss- Determines who will serve first.

Serving faults- A player tosses the ball into the opponent’s service box diagonally. They
get two chances to serve and if they miss the serve, they lose the point.

Deuce- When the match is tied it is called Deuce

Tiebreakers- If a match is tied, players are forced to decide the winner through a
tiebreaker.

Flat serve- A flat serve is hard and powerful, making it ideal for a first serve in a tennis
game.

7. Steps of the lesson: The procedures should clearly describe the sequence of learning
activities. Anyone should take these written procedures and teach the lesson. Consider:
teacher modeling (I do), guided practice (We do), independent practice (You do), and
higher order thinking questions, grouping, and handing out materials. This can be
numbered or bulleted. This will be the longest most detailed part of the lesson plan.
Remember to include when you will pass out things (and how), when you will ask
questions, etc. Anyone should be able to pick up these lessons and teach them the same
way you would.

The students will take a pre-test to begin class.

(I do)- I will explain the fundamentals of tennis as well as make sure the students
understand the following information: tennis as well as the basics of playing tennis for
the interactive part of the lesson. I will explain that tennis is a game played with two
opposing players or teams, which are singles and doubles. Players use rackets to hit a
tennis ball (having a specific size, weight) to bounce the ball over the net. Tennis is
played on a rectangular court. One person must serve the ball to the other side of the
court and the opposing side must hit it back to the other side. The ball cannot be hit
twice in a row by the same person. I will also explain the following vocabulary for the
students:

Coin toss- Determines who will serve first.

Serving faults- A player tosses the ball into the opponent’s service box diagonally. They
get two chances to serve and if they miss the serve, they lose the point.

Deuce- When the match is tied it is called Deuce

Tiebreakers- If a match is tied, players are forced to decide the winner through a
tiebreaker.

Flat serve- A flat serve is hard and powerful, making it ideal for a first serve in a tennis
game.

The students will then be directed to ask any questions before we begin playing the game.
After questions and making sure the students understand the content, the students will be
directed to begin playing tennis, and participating in a game that promotes health. The
students will play tennis. I will demonstrate how to play then the students will be allowed to
begin on their own.

Progress Monitoring: How will you check for understanding of learning throughout the lesson? How
will this monitoring guide your instruction during the lesson? (Must be more than asking questions with
one or two answers).

I will check for understanding in the students while they are playing the game. I will observe the
students playing and correct any actions that are done wrong. I will also make sure to observe the
students while teaching the content, if students are giving unsure looks, I will ask open-ended
questions to guide the students in the right direction.

8. Closing: Teacher and students engage in review of what was covered in the lesson. Describe the
strategy or activity that will be used to facilitate students’ recall and maintenance of learning that is
linked to the lesson objective(s).

Once the students are done playing tennis, I will bring the students back together and review
the material. If there are any questions about tennis, the rules, or how to play, this would be a
great time for them to be asked. I will restate the objectives and make sure that they are
completed.
