FLUID ASSIST BEARING (FAB) FOR MARINE RISER TELESCOPIC JOINTS /

MANDRELS
1 Equipment
Fluid Assist Bearing (FAB) for Marine Riser Telescopic Joints / Mandrels

2 Technical Description
The Fluid Assist Bearing (FAB) is a high axial load carrying device that is used in conjunction with other marine riser
equipment, such as the Telescopic Joint (TJ) and riser tensioner rings, to allow a floating drilling vessel to rotate while
limiting the torque transmitted into the marine riser string and subsequently the well head. The FAB has an annular
chamber which, when pressurized, creates a low friction fluid interface between the rotating outer housing and the
mandrel attached to the riser string. The pressure chamber is sealed with low friction, Teflon swivel seals. The
VIEWED: 2012/02/20 11:13:32

FAB requires two hydraulic lines; a pressure line to the bearing cavity and a seal monitor line to detect excessive
OSP10001 | E

leakage from the primary seals.

This procedure specifically addresses the FAB sub assemblies used on telescopic joints. There are four sizes,
each with a different load rating and torque resistance.

Thoroughly clean and visually inspect all components for damage and excessive corrosion. Repair or

4.2 Running Procedure

DOCUMENT:

It is recommended that the FAB remain in the collapsed (un-pressurized) position during normal
drilling operations. When a rig heading change is necessary, have the rig start the heading change
REVIEWED ON: 2011/04/04 15:15:47
APPROVED BY: Eric Larson APPROVED ON: 2011/04/04 16:49:44

building torque into the riser string approximately 20 degrees in the direction of the heading
change. Then inject, with a minimum of 1800 psi, the correct volume of fluid into the bearing
pressure chamber (approximately half chamber capacity). Continue rotating the vessel to the
desired heading. When that is accomplished, bleed the injected pressure and allow the FAB to
return to its collapsed position. This will extend the life of the FAB swivel seals and minimize
bearing fluid loss. This recommended procedure is easily accomplished by incorporating a fixed
volume cylinder that injects and extracts the correct volume of bearing fluid on demand.
1. After deploying the telescopic joint/riser mandrel and landing the FAB onto its mating load shoulder, the
FAB should be in the collapsed position; i.e., no fluid in the bearing cavity.
2. Install the hydraulic hose from the bearing fluid injection circuit to the FILL PORT.
3. Install the monitor hydraulic hose to the SEAL MONITOR Port. Equip the MONITOR hose with a
open/close valve and run it to an open site glass or tube. The valve can be closed if the primary seals

fail to hold sufficient pressure allowing the secondary seals to permit continued operations until primary
seals can be replaced.

The TJ/FAB is generally stored in the horizontal position which may flatten the swivel seals
within the FAB. We recommend that the swivel seals in the FAB be pressure tested in the
vertical position. This can be done once the FAB is landed on or in the tensioning ring and
is sharing load with the draw-works. Use a fluid supply line regulated from 0–3000 psi and
bypass any FAB control system (refer to OSP10021 for a GE FAB panel setup for bypass).
A separate supply line may be needed to test with depending on the individual rig setup for
controlling the FAB.
VIEWED: 2012/02/20 11:13:32

The FAB needs to be in the retracted position and all the air out of the system. Then use the
OSP10001 | E

fluid supply line to fully extend the FAB with 1500 psi to 2500 psi. Do not exceed 3000 psi.
This will energize the swivel seals. Monitor the pressure for 5 minutes, vent, and re-install any
FAB control system or re-configure for normal use.
4. When making rig-heading changes, activate the FAB by displacing the correct volume of bearing fluid at
sufficient pressure through the FILL PORT hydraulic line. Consult the applicable Tension vs. Torque
DOCUMENT:

Chart and Tension vs. Pressure for volume and pressure requirements, respectively.
REVIEWED ON: 2011/04/04 15:15:47
APPROVED BY: Eric Larson APPROVED ON: 2011/04/04 16:49:44

It is very important to only pressure the fill/return port. Under no circumstances should you
pressure the seal monitor port. This will cause damage to the swivel seals. The monitor port is
only used to check for leaks between the seals. GE Drilling & Production recommends that
the monitor port is checked during operation.
5. After rig heading changes are complete, bleed the bearing fluid from the FAB by allowing the fluid
to return to the fixed volume cylinder.

5 Retrieving Procedure
When removing hydraulic lines from the FAB, ports and lines must be capped to prevent contamination from entering
the circuits.

5.1 Post Operational Maintenance

REVIEWED BY: Jim Reams

1. Wash down the assembly with fresh water.

2. Inspect exterior surfaces for damage and excess corrosion. Hand buff as necessary to correct.
3. Lubricate all exposed surfaces. Move the assembly to its proper storage area and secure.

and remove the lower spacer clamp.

7. Slowly lower the FAB housing exposing the split load ring on the mandrel. Remove the split load
ring. Exercise care as there may be residual loads on the ring which can cause the ring to disengage
suddenly and jump out of the groove and cause injury.
8. Continue to lower the FAB outer housing until the weight is supported by the guide gussets on the outer
barrel/mandrel. Remove the two anti-rotation keys on the mandrel, 2 places.

8 Pressure Testing
VIEWED: 2012/02/20 11:13:32

All testing needs to be performed on an assembled telescopic joint or a qualified test fixture; the
OSP10001 | E

assembled FAB will not take the pressure without being assembled onto a FAB adaptor. It may
result in equipment damage or bodily injury.
1. Once the FAB is assembled install it onto the telescopic joint or test fixture.
2. Attach gauges to the FILL PORT (FP) and SEAL MONITOR PORT (SMP).
DOCUMENT:

3. Attach test hose from the High Pressure Unit (HPU) to the FP.
4. Test the primary swivel seals to working pressure 3000 psi for five minutes.
5. Attach other test hose from the HPU to the SMP.

6. Test the secondary swivel seals to working pressure 3000 psi for five minutes. It is very important to not
exceed the working pressure.
7. When the test is finished bleed off the SMP first then the FP. This is important. If not done correctly, it will
cause damage to the primary swivel seals.

9 Shipping
1. If the FAB is shipped, loose it should be in the collapsed position and with the top looking up.
2. If the FAB is shipped installed on a telescopic joint and sitting on its side, it should never be used to hold the entire
weight of the telescopic joint. This includes the unit being stored on the rig.
