Study Strategies For Physiology

This document provides tips for effective study strategies in anatomy and physiology. It discusses 8 key study skills: having a positive attitude, determining your learning preferences, understanding terminology, planning a learning strategy with time management and logical sequencing, using the SQ4R reading method, analyzing note-taking, studying actively through questions and groups, and utilizing available resources. The overall message is that with organization and using your strengths, you can succeed in your studies.

Study Strategies for Anatomy and Physiology

Reference: Kevin T. Patton

What is your approach to studying?
My study strategies…
Strategy Pros Cons
Study Skill 1 – Have a Winning Attitude
Study Skill 2 – Figure out your Learning Preferences

 Do I prefer a verbal explanation of a process or a written

explanation?

 Do I need to see, hear or touch a model or specimen as I

learn about a process?

 Do I learn better at a particular time of the day?

 Do I learn better if I am physically active or eating or

drinking while I study?

 Do I prefer starting with the ‘big picture’ and working

toward the detail, or do I prefer starting with the detail and
then assembling the big picture?
Study Skill 2 – Figure out your Learning Preferences

 Do I need to see, hear or touch a model or specimen as I learn

about a process?
Study Skill 3 – Know the Language

• Most terms come from Latin and Greek

– Terms are made by combining word parts ex.
Carbaminohemoglobin

• Correct spelling is important!

– Ex. Ilium vs. Ileum

• Practice new terminology (try making a glossary

page that you can quickly refer to as you study)
Study Skill 4 – Plan a Learning Strategy

It will take you less time to study if you use an organized plan.
Study Skill 4 – Plan a Learning Strategy

Time Management
• Put it down in writing
– Monthly calendar
– Weekly schedule
– Daily to-do list

• Don’t short yourself on study time

• Break up your study sessions

Study Skill 4 – Plan a Learning Strategy

• Turn wasted time into study time

• Watch yourself
Study Skill 4 – Plan a Learning Strategy

Logical Sequence of Activities

• Determined by your learning style, the
limitations you live with and what might
work for others
Study Skill 4 – Plan a Learning Strategy
An example of a plan:
1. Go through slides posted for each Module
2. Attend lectures and take notes
3. Review and organize your notes
4. Do the textbook readings and add to your lecture
notes
5. Attend tutorials
6. Work through some learning activities (learning
worksheets, end of chapter questions, etc)
7. Review the material with other students
8. Make a quick review of your notes
As overwhelming as it may seem at times, know that
you CAN succeed.
Study Skill 5 – Plan a Reading Strategy

SQ4R
1. SURVEY the chapter before you read it.
2. Ask yourself QUESTIONS
3. READ the chapter
4. RECITE aloud what you have just read
5. RECORD the main ideas (you can try integrating
this with your notes from lecture so that you only
have one set of notes per lecture)
6. REVIEW your textbook and reading notes often
Study Skill 6 – Analyze your Note-Taking Skills

• Figure out professor’s style/course format

• Plan for note-taking
• Follow the instructions well
• Structure your notes
– Know ahead of time what type of outline you are using
– Be concise
– Leave room between notes
– Highlight or colored pencils
Study Skill 6 – Analyze your Note-Taking Skills

• Process your notes

• Write it out
• Look for connections
Study Skill 7 – Study Actively
• Answer the review questions found at the end of each
chapter
• Explain concepts out loud (speaking and hearing yourself
both help with memory retention)
• Keep up with the new vocabulary (by making a glossary
page or using flash cards)
• Form study groups
Study Skill 7 – Study Actively
Study Skill 7 – Study Actively
Here are some ideas for how to study in a group
• Make up practice test items for each other
• Review your notes together, filling in each other “blank spots”
• Compare flash cards and use them to quiz each other
• Help each other make a personal study plan & schedule to prepare for
each test
• Make concept maps and concept lists together
• Make a list of “trouble spots” while studying alone and bring them for a
group help session
• Teach others in your group a new concept you just learned
• As a group, make up silly mnemonics and analogies to help you
understand and remember difficult concepts.
• Make up poems or songs to help you remember important concepts. For
example, the anatomical order of skin layers or the steps of synaptic
transmission.
Study Skill 7 – Study Actively

• Make a ‘concept map’ of important concepts

– Flow chart
– Circle diagram
– Tree diagram
– Full colour sketch
– Tables
Study Skill 8 – Use All Your Resources

• Professor
• Syllabus
• Textbook resources
• Study partners
• Academic Skills Centre – online resources
• Digital devices
– Notetaking, sharing, clipping notes, digital textbook,
digital flash-card system, YouTube
