Awareness Training
What is it?
Program developed by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration,
Training and Skills Development
A general introduction to workplace health & safety

What is it important?
Legally required for all workplaces

6
Awareness Training Activity
Basic occupational health and safety awareness training — workers

Basic occupational health and safety awareness training —

supervisors
_______________________________________________

What is the Regulation? What section is each in?

What does the Regulation say this training must have for each of these?

How often do they need it by law?

7
Awareness Training
What are the training requirements?
Needs to meets the requirement for described in O. Reg. 297/13

Employers may choose to use another program but should make

sure it meets the requirements in the regulation

Employers must keep a record

May be delivered either face-to-face with one worker or a group of

workers electronically through an eLearning module
8
• Awareness training
• Ergonomics
• Occupational hygiene
• Medical surveillance
• PPE
• Fire Safety
• Emergency Management
• Site specific health and safety plans
9
Ergonomics
What is it?

Science concerned with fitting the job or task

to the physical and mental capabilities
of the worker

Musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) is an

umbrella term for a number of injuries and
disorders of the musculoskeletal system

10
Ergonomics
Why is it important?

MSDs are the number one type of lost-

time work injury reported to the WSIB in
Ontario

11
Ergonomics
Considerations when developing an
Ergonomics Program
Understanding of work-processes, job tasks, equipment, and
workplace layouts

Determine whether machines or people are best suited to complete a

particular job task

Workers should not experience undue stress or strain when using

tools, job methods, workstation layouts, and materials

12
Ergonomics
What should a program include?

MSD Prevention Guideline for

Ontario (2018)

14
Occupational Hygiene
What is it?

AIHA Be a Game Changer

15
Occupational Hygiene
What is it?

Occupational hygiene (also called

industrial hygiene) is concerned with both
the preservation of good health and the
prevention of diseases in the workplace

16
Occupational Hygiene
Why is it important?

In workplaces with hazards that require more

specialized knowledge, or management
or in workplaces that work with high risk hazards that
can be tied occupational disease and illness
These are high risk environments and hazard control
requires expertise in planning, assessment and
17
control recommendations
Occupational Hygiene
What should a program include?

OHCOW has resources for employers, different hazard

specific tools and resources to help employers
understand what type of programs they will need.

OHCOW also has active cluster investigations

18
• Awareness training
• Ergonomics
• Occupational hygiene
• Medical surveillance
• PPE
• Fire Safety
• Emergency Management
• Site specific health and safety plans
19
Medical Surveillance
What is it?

If workers may be exposed to designated substances, a

medical surveillance program is required

Medical protocols designed specifically for the type of

exposure

Can include physical exams, laboratory testing, data analysis,

x-rays, lung capacity and other medical tests
20
Medical Surveillance
Why is it important?
Identifying workers with conditions which may be aggravated by exposure to the
designated substance

Establishing a baseline measure for determining changes in health

Evaluating the effects of exposure on workers

Enabling remedial action to be when necessary

21
Providing health information targeted to the individual worker
Medical Surveillance
What should a program include?

Set by The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills

Development’s Code for Medical Surveillance for
Designated Substances

Program requirements for: asbestos, benzene, coke

oven emissions, isocyanates, lead, mercury and
silica
22
Medical Surveillance
What should a program include?

Collection of medical history

A physical examination

Clinical tests

23
Medical Surveillance
When and how often?
Pre-placement

Periodic intervals afterwards

Where acute exposure occurs (depending on substance)

When a worker leaves their placement

24
• Awareness training
• Ergonomics
• Occupational hygiene
• Medical surveillance
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Fire Safety
• Emergency Management
• Site specific health and safety plans
25
PPE
What is it?
Equipment worn by a worker to minimize exposure to specific hazards

Examples include: respirators, gloves, aprons, fall protection, and full body
suits, as well as head, eye and foot protection

Only one element in a complete hazard control program

Does not reduce the hazard itself nor does it guarantee permanent or
total protection

26
PPE
When is it used?

As an interim (short term) measure before controls are

implemented
Where other controls are not available or adequate
During activities such as maintenance, clean up, and repair
where pre-contact controls are not feasible or effective
During emergency situations
27
PPE
What should a program include?

The main elements that must be considered are:

protection of workers
compliance with applicable laws / regulations / standards /
guidelines
compliance with internal company requirements
technical feasibility
28
PPE
What should a program include?
Worker involvement
the greater the workers' involvement in all stages the smoother the program will be
to implement and operate

Educated about WHY, trained in the HOW

How you do this will impact the acceptance and effectiveness of the whole program

Considerations of comfort and user needs

Worker compliance will be be poor if it unattractive, uncomfortable, or is imposed
with little choice in the selection
Offer some flexibility in models/makes where possible
29
PPE
How to develop the program?
• Choose PPE to match the hazard
• Get advice on proper selection
• Have a workplace trial, whenever possible
• Ensure PPE meets standards / certification (e.g., CSA, CGSB, NIOSH, ANSI).
• Include fitting of PPE to the individual
• Observe or survey users to make sure the PPE is worn and worn properly
• Make sure that workers know how to perform regular maintenance and
inspection of their PPE
• Make sure that workers can identify potential problems or defects with their PPE
during the pre-use inspection or while wearing/using

30
PPE
What are the training requirements?
Must demonstrate:
how to use effectively
why it is important
how to fit and wear PPE
how to adjust it for maximum protection
and how to care for it

31
PPE
What are the training requirements?

It is not good enough to tell someone to wear a

respirator just because management and/or
legislation requires it

If the respirator is intended to prevent lung disorders,

the workers must be informed of the hazards

32
PPE
Who requires training?

Workers and their supervisors training in when, where,

why, and how to use the equipment to achieve the necessary
level of protection
Workers who are exposed on a regular basis
AND others who might be exposed on an occasional basis
ex. Emergencies, temporary work in dangerous areas.
33
