GUIDANCE
The aim of this game plan is to provide you with a blueprint you can use to help focus and refine your training
prior to a competition.
If there are gaps or areas of uncertainty, you can discuss these with one or more of the coaches (or your team
mates).
You may want to use sparring sessions as an opportunity to work on your gameplan.
Importantly, having an idea of what you want to do will be invaluable on the day when someone is trying to
corner you and provide help.
How to fill the game plan in
PRE FIGHT
Most people are nervous. How are you going to reduce or make your nerves manageable?
You will need to warm up. Some people prefer to roll or do positional sparring. Others like to just stretch.
Music is a tool that can be used to manage how you feel, it can be used to elevate your heart rate or to keep
you calm.
PRIMARY GAME
How are you going to start the match? This can be pulling guard or a takedown, consider what you are trying
to achieve, and where you want to be (the objectives), and how you intend to do that (techniques). This
might be influenced by the stage you are at in the tournament.
However you choose to start the match, it’s likely that you’ll end up in either top or bottom position. What is
your primary game in those positions?
If you are playing guard, you should think about the type of guard you want to play. What are the main
sweeps and submissions you intend to use from that guard?
If you are on top, what pass or passes are you going to use? Usually there will be a starting point for your
passing sequence, consider how you will get to that starting point. In addition, think about the objective you
are aiming for from the pass, such as mount or back control. You also need to have an objective related to a
submission you intend to use once you have passed guard.
The standing element may be the same as how you started the match. Which is totally ok.
ESCAPES
It’s inevitable that at some point you will be in a bad position. Having reliable techniques or methods for
escaping those positions is essential.
Overall when thinking about your gameplan, you will want to have a strategy on how you intend to stitch the
various parts together. For example:
Pull guard using collar and sleeve > Full guard > attack armbar and/or flower sweep to mount.
Take down with double leg or single leg > Move to HQ > X pass to side control > progress to mount > attack
americana or collar choke
