Political Issues and Problems Facing Jharkhand

Corruption is rampant throughout Jharkhand's state administration and bureaucracy. Officials are regularly caught accepting bribes, and embezzling funds from government schemes. Left-wing extremism from Maoist and Naxalite groups is also a major issue, with ongoing conflict between these groups and security forces resulting in civilian casualties. Several districts in Jharkhand are considered moderately affected by Naxalite activity. Additionally, criminal activities like theft, rape, human trafficking and cybercrime pose problems in many parts of the state.

POLITICAL ISSUES AND PROBLEMS FACING JHARKHAND

CORRUPTION:-

“The Hemant Soren government is the most corrupt in the country.

Resources are being looted using railway wagons and tractors.
People will unseat this government from power in the state as it
failed to fulfil the 'aspirations of development' for which the separate
state was created” said union home minister Amit Shah.

Officials from the anti-corruption bureau have caught a Jharkhand

officer red-handed while taking a bribe. Incidentally, it was the first
posting for the officer.
Mithali Sharma, an officer in the cooperative department of
Jharkhand, was apprehended by the Hazaribagh Anti Corruption
Bureau (ACB) for accepting a bribe from a local organisation. In her
first posting as an assistant registrar in Koderma, she had been
working for eight months before her arrest.

Corruption in state administration is an accepted norm. Be it

secretariat staff or staff working in district administration or at block
level.
Bureaucracy is no exception either. Interestingly, there is a
hierarchy, where “ share" of every involved party is shared with due
diligence and ironically, with utmost honesty.
Money embezzled from govt. schemes forms the crux of the
problem. The situation in jharkhand is worse than bihar as far as
corruption is concerned.
However, good officers respect Honest officials and an
Honest officer need not fear anyone
POLITICAL EXTREMISM :-
MAOSIM-Maoism is a form of communism that uses armed
insurgency, mass mobilization, and strategic alliances to capture
state power. The Maoists also use propaganda and disinformation
against state institutions.
In Jharkhand, the conflict between the Maoists and security forces
has been deadly for impoverished villagers and police personnel.
According to police records,:
Ten villagers have been killed in IED blasts in the Kokhan jungles
since November 20, 2022.
Six villagers have been seriously injured in the Kokhan jungles since
November 20, 2022.
Eleven civilians have been killed in Maoist violence in the past 10
months in the hilly terrain inside Saranda and Kokhan reserve
forests in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district.

NAXALISM-Jharkhand is one of the worst states in India affected by

left-wing extremism (LWE). Naxalites are most active in Jharkhand,
and they cause more destruction there than in other states.
Naxalites are fighting to seize land from oppressors and redistribute
it to peasants. They have set up bases in heavily forested and
mountainous regions of Jharkhand, calling these areas "liberated"
from the government's rule.
The Naxalites are most active in Jharkhand. They announce the
most number of clamp downs in Jharkhand.
Seven districts in Jharkhand were categorized as moderately
affected by Naxalites in 2022:
Latehar, West Singhbhum, Khunti, Lohardaga, Seraikela-
Kharsawan, Ranchi, Giridih.
The government has established security camps to counter
Naxalism.
CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES:-
Theft
Between January and June, the highest number of theft cases were
registered in Ranchi (1278), Dhanbad (536), Bokaro (397), and
Giridih (151).

Rape
Between January and June, the maximum number of rape cases
were registered in Ranchi (90), Giridih (75), Dhanbad (38), and
Bokaro (32).
Human trafficking
Jharkhand has the highest conviction rate for human traffickers at
84.2%, which is higher than the national average of 16%.
Cybercrime
Jamtara is known as the cyber crime capital of India.
Other criminal activities in Jharkhand include:
Criminals firing at the residences of businessmen and professionals,
leaving behind a slip demanding money
The Jharkhand Police Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) raiding 230
hideouts of criminals associated with various gangs
Property crimes such as vandalism and theft
Violent crimes such as assault and armed robbery.
