Dear Diary,
I have been married to Charley for a few years now and I have always
known him to be an intelligent man with an imaginative mind. However, his
recent obsession with finding the Third Level has left me quite worried.
While he talks about it with excitement, I cannot help but wonder if it is a
good quality or a harmful one.
However, his obsession has caused him to become detached from reality.
He is no longer able to differentiate between what is real and what is not.
He spends all his time and money searching for a place that may not even
exist. This could be harmful not only to himself but also to our family.
English | Diary Based Ques| By Aditya Bhaiya
I understand that he feels overwhelmed by the stress and pressures of his
present life and Sam indicated that he uses his obsession as a coping
mechanism. I think this is harmful as it prevents him from addressing the
underlying issues that are causing him stress.
Finally, all I can say is, I believe that Charley’s obsession with finding the
Third Level may have started as a harmless curiosity, but it has now
become a harmful one. I love him dearly and I hope that he realizes that
his obsession is affecting not only himself but also those around him.

2. Imagine that you come across Louisa’s diary. What might you find in it
about the third level? Compose at least one diary entry based on any of
the events from the story, ‘The Third Level’.
Dear Diary,
Today, my husband Charley came home with a wild story about a third
level in the Grand Central Terminal that leads to the past. At first, I thought
he was joking or maybe even delusional. But as he continued to explain his
theory and show me evidence, such as the old-style currency he had
withdrawn from the bank, I began to wonder if there might be some truth
to it.
I don't know what the future holds, but I am excited to see where Charley's
journey into the third level will take him. Maybe, just maybe, I will get to
travel through time too.

3. At the end of his last lesson, M. Hamel decides to leave a little note for
each of his students for them to find the next day at their desks. Based on
your reading of the story, what might his note to Franz read?
Dear Franz,
I know you have always preferred to run in the open fields, but I hope that
today's lesson has shown you the value of exploring new ideas and
perspectives. Remember to keep your curiosity alive and to seek out
knowledge wherever you can find it. The world is full of wonders, and I have
no doubt that you will continue to discover new joys and insights wherever
your path may lead.

4. Franz from The Last Lesson and the peddler from The Rattrap
demonstrate the importance of learning from our mistakes to evolve into
better people. Imagine that Shubhangi, your friend, feels as if she has
made a mistake by not taking her academics seriously. Write an essay to
Shubhangi in 120–150 words discussing instances from the two texts to
give her an insight into the human tendency to make mistakes and learn
from them.
Upon this realization, Franz is filled with remorse and tries his best to recite
the lesson. He is unable to do so and feels guilty, so he listens to the
remaining part of the lesson with attention. Similarly, inspired by Edla’s
kindness to him, the rattrap man returns the stolen money.
Both of these characters thus realize their mistakes and take initiative to fix
them. They make the choice to evolve into better people by learning from
their mistakes, something that makes a difference in their lives.

5. 'The cry of not having money to do anything except carry on the business
of making bangles, not even enough to eat, rings in every home.'
(The Lost Spring)
'...far from the city, we make our roadside stand and ask for some city
money to feel in hand'.
(A Roadside Stand)
Owner of a roadside stand: Your bangles are pretty. Tell me about your
experience in this business.

Owner of a roadside stand: Your bangles are pretty. Tell me about your
experience in this business.
Bangle Maker: Thank you. I have been making bangles for as long as I can
remember. It's a family business and we have been doing it for generations.
Bangle Maker: Yes, it's not easy. We barely make enough to survive. The cry
of not having money to do anything except carry on the business of making
bangles, not even enough to eat, rings in every home.
Owner of a roadside stand: I know how it feels. That's why I came to the city
to set up this roadside stand. But even here, it's a struggle to make enough
money to survive.
English | Diary Based Ques| By Aditya Bhaiya
Bangle Maker: It's the same for us. We live far from the city, and when we
come here to sell our bangles, we ask for some city money to feel in our
hand. It's a difficult life.
Owner of a roadside stand: Yes, it is. But we have to keep going. We can't
give up. We have to find ways to improve our situation.
As the mother, write a letter to the authorities with reference to the case of
your son.
Sir
As parents, we trust that the YMCA provides a safe environment for children
to engage in recreational activities. However, the incident involving our son
has shaken our confidence in the facility's commitment to ensuring the well-
being of its visitors, especially young children.
English | Diary Based Ques| By Aditya Bhaiya
It is alarming to note that there was an absence of a vigilant and capable
team of guards near the pool to supervise the children during their activities.
Had there been proper supervision in place, the mishap could have been
prevented, and the trauma inflicted upon our son could have been avoided.
In light of this incident, we demand that the YMCA takes immediate and
appropriate action to rectify the situation. It is imperative that you employ a
team of trained and qualified guards near the pool area, who are well-
equipped to handle emergency situations and ensure the safety of all
children and individuals using the facility.
English | Diary Based Ques| By Aditya Bhaiya
Furthermore, we urge you to conduct a thorough review of your safety
protocols and procedures, identifying any gaps or deficiencies that may
exist. Implementing stringent safety measures, such as regular inspections,
maintenance of safety equipment, and mandatory staff training, will help
prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
We await your immediate action and assurance that our concerns will be
addressed appropriately.
Yours sincerely,

7. The prose selections, Deep Water and Indigo, bring out the importance of

English | Diary Based Ques| By Aditya Bhaiya
Good morning, students!
We all know what it's like to be afraid. Fear is our body's natural response to
a perceived threat or danger. But when we let fear immobilize us, it prevents
us from progressing and living life to the fullest. Today, I want to share two
powerful stories that illustrate the importance of overcoming fear.
In the story "Deep Water," we meet William Douglas, who had a deep fear of
water. This fear held him back from experiencing simple joys like fishing or
canoeing. But instead of letting fear control him, he made a decision to face
it head-on. It took months of determination and persistence, but he worked
through his fear and learned how to swim. By doing so, he reclaimed his life
and freed himself from the shackles of fear.
English | Diary Based Ques| By Aditya Bhaiya
These stories teach us that overcoming fear requires facing it, devising a
plan, and working through it. It demands persistence and unwavering
determination. Just as William Douglas took small steps each day to
conquer his fear, and the peasants of Champaran fought for their rights
despite the risks, we too must find the courage within ourselves.
So, my dear students, I urge you to embrace your fears and turn them into
stepping stones for growth. Don't let fear hold you back from reaching your
full potential. Take inspiration from the stories of William Douglas and the
peasants of Champaran, and let their courage fuel your own.
English | Diary Based Ques| By Aditya Bhaiya
Believe in yourselves, work through your fears, and never stop pushing
forward. Success and fulfillment await those who dare to overcome their
fears and embrace the possibilities that lie beyond.
Thank you, and may you find the strength to conquer your fears and live a
life of purpose and achievement.

8. Imagine that you overheard the following snippet of an interaction between
the valet and the housekeeper at the ironmaster’s mansion at the end of the
story.
Speaker 1 questioned whether the valet would still speak highly of Ms.
Willmansson if the vagabond had stolen the silver spoons. The valet, Speaker
2, defended Ms. Willmansson, emphasizing that she did what was right by
helping the poor man, regardless of the outcome. He believed that the choice
of right and wrong should not depend on the result.
In the end, it is not solely about the outcome or whether the vagabond could
have betrayed her trust. It is about the choices we make and the values we
uphold, even when faced with uncertainty. Ms. Willmansson's compassion
and kindness exemplify the true spirit of Christmas and the potential for
positive change in all of us.
Yours contemplatively,

9. Imagine Gandhi was to deliver a speech to students in present-day India
showing them the path to becoming responsible world leaders. Based on
your understanding of Gandhi’s own leadership skills, write a speech, as
Gandhi, addressing the students about the qualities that every leader and
politician should nurture.

Dear students,
You are all leaders of social change. I see many bright and enthusiastic faces
that assure me that our future is in good hands. I have learned from my own
experiences that true leadership is not about power or authority, but about
service and compassion. As you step into the world as responsible individuals,
I urge you to nurture certain qualities that will make you exemplary leaders
and politicians.
First and foremost, always remember the power of truth and nonviolence.
Embrace honesty and integrity in everything you do. Be fearless in standing
up for what is right, even if it means going against the tide. Violence may
seem like a quick solution, but it only breeds more hatred and suffering.
Nonviolence requires strength and courage, and it can transform even the
most difficult situations.
English | Diary Based Ques| By Aditya Bhaiya
Thirdly, lead by example. Your actions will speak louder than your words. Be
the change you wish to see in the world. Live a life of simplicity and practice
what you preach. When people see your sincerity and dedication, they will be
inspired to follow you.
My dear students, the path to becoming responsible world leaders may not
always be easy, but with courage, determination, and the right values, you
can leave a lasting impact on society. The world needs leaders who lead with
their hearts and strive to make a positive difference. I have faith in each one
of you to carry the torch of truth, nonviolence, humility, and inclusivity.
English | Diary Based Ques| By Aditya Bhaiya
Let us work together to create a world that is just, compassionate, and
harmonious. The future is yours to shape. I believe in you.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,

11. Imagine Asokamitran witnesses a film shooting and visits a film set of
present-day Bollywood. As Asokamitran writes a diary entry penning down
the transformation you notice between the film-making of yesteryears and
today.
English | Diary Based Ques| By Aditya Bhaiya
Dear Diary,
In my era, filmmaking was a more intimate affair. The equipment was bulky,
and the sets were often constrained by practical limitations. Actors had to be
precise, and retakes were costly. But today, it's a different world altogether.
The sets are grand, almost like a mini-city, with advanced technology that
can create any backdrop imaginable.
Actors seem to have more liberty to experiment, with multiple takes available
without the burden of additional expenses. The precision and detailing in
every shot are remarkable, thanks to digital cinematography. There's also a
refreshing diversity in storytelling and casting, which was limited in my time.
English | Diary Based Ques| By Aditya Bhaiya
However, I couldn't help but feel a tinge of nostalgia for the simplicity of
yesteryears. The personal touch and the charm of the past seem to have
given way to a more commercialized and fast-paced industry. Nonetheless,
the evolution of Bollywood is a testament to the dynamism of art, and I'm
grateful to have witnessed this transformation.
Yours faithfully,
Asokamitran

The Making of a Writer
I did not simply take to writing. Many experiences of my life forced me to pick
up the pen, and among those experiences, one stands out—the
transformative impact of the Students on Ice program. Allow me to share with

Through my writing, I now strive to capture the fragility and resilience of our
environment, to convey the interconnectedness of all living beings, and to
inspire others to take action. The Students on Ice program has been the
catalyst for this transformation in my writing, shaping my perspective and
igniting a passion within me to advocate for our planet.

writing has been immeasurable. It has opened my eyes to the urgency of
environmental issues, broadened my horizons through cultural exchange, and
