SPECIAL PROCEDURES (1) KINLOSS

Elev 22 Var 6°W TA 3000 TRL ATC B1
EGQK/FSS SCOTLAND

GENERAL
1. Lossiemouth and Kinloss operate on a single Clutch QFE pressure setting for all operations
within the CMATZ and for associated instrument procedures and radar patterns iaw Mil AIP ENR
2-1-5-3.7. When Lossiemouth (higher aerodrome) is open the Clutch QFE will be observed
barometric pressure for the TDZE of the Lossiemouth Rwy in use. When Lossiemouth is closed
the Kinloss airfield QFE will be used. DH/MDH figures specified for Kinloss are published as
procedure minima's and altimeter readings with Clutch QFE set will never be lower than physical
minima specified. Variation between TDZEs; maximum 25ft minimum 7ft.

2. All Kinloss and Lossiemouth traffic both inbd and oubd, is co-ordinated by a Unified Approach
control (LOSSIE APPROACH).
3. An AIAA is established in the Moray Firth from the surface to FL150. Acft unable to avoid the AIAA
are to contact LOSSIE APPROACH not less than 20nm from the boundary.
4. The Entry/Exit lane into DORNOCH is uncontrolled.
5. Unless in emergency, acft are not to fly above 1500 QFE without clearance from Lossiemouth ATC.
All traffic above 1500 QFE will be under Lossiemouth control.
INBOUND TRAFFIC
Changes: Editorial

6. All approaches are monitored. Contact LOSSIE APPROACH at 50nm range for radar positioning.
OUTBOUND TRAFFIC
7. Pass requested oubd route and level to ATC on GROUND before taxiing.
8. Acft departing IFR will be issued release clearances that conform to published SID's. See relevant
procedure charts G1 and G2.
MISSED APPROACH AND COMMS FAILURE PROCEDURES
9. See RADAR PROCEDURES chart (K1) for details.
NOISE ABATEMENT
10. Overflight of the following is prohibited:
a. Langcot House (North side of Rwy 08 THR).
No 1 AIDU (RAF)/European Aeronautical Group Aerad EGQKB1

b. Binsness House (270°/2·5nm).

c. Forres (below 2000 QFE).
d. Findhorn (below 2000 QFE).
e. Coltfield (087°/3·2nm)
11. Rwy 26 VFR departures maintain rwy tr to 1000 QFE before turning.
GOOSE HAZARD
12. Kinloss airfield experiences concentrated movements of geese during the period of September
to April. Maximum intensity is during the periods of first light plus 1hr, and 1hr either side of sunset.
Most day -to -day local movements of geese occur below 1000 agl, but during migration periods
they fly at much higher altitudes.
13. The geese use Findhorn Bay (N57 30 W003 36) as a roost, and by mid-November 6000 or more
can be expected as they move to and from their feeding grounds within a 10km radius.
14. The visual circuit may be restricted by ATC during periods of geese activity for flight safety reasons.

GEESE DETECTION SYSTEM

15. A geese detection system is installed at RAF Kinloss. The system comprises radar displays set
to 4nm range, one gives a 360° horizontal view and the second a 25° wide elevation view (GND-
3000ft) aligned with the RCLs. The following conditions apply to information passed:
a. Captains of acft remain responsible for the avoidance of birds.
b. The geese detection system can only detect a skein of 30 geese or more, there is no guarantee
that other types of birds, singletons or flocks, will be detected.
c. Controllers will inform pilots of known activity or when information is not available.
d. Information on geese activity will be passed in 2 ways, firstly dynamic information on individual
skeins of geese; secondly, as planning advice to pilots to plan for northerly/southerly visual
ccts or to hold off/delay departure.

GOOSE HAZARD
16. Dynamic Geese Information. Controllers will pass information on individual skeins of geese to
pilots in the visual circuit, or about to join, and to pilots on a radar approach. The datum used for the
information will be the centre of the airfield for visual circuit traffic and touch down point for acft on
radar approach.
17. Assessment of geese intensity. Controllers will pass their assessment of geese activity using the
following matrix against the areas marked in the diagram below.
