Math 4-Quarter 3 Week 2-Module 2

This document is a mathematics module about triangles and quadrilaterals for 4th grade students. It contains 3 lessons that teach students about the attributes and properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, how to identify and describe different types of triangles based on sides and angles, and how to identify and describe different types of quadrilaterals such as squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and rhombi. Target

A great day to all Grade IV learners!

This module will give you clearer knowledge on

triangles and quadrilaterals. As you go on, you will learn their
attributes and properties as well as the different types of triangles
and quadrilaterals.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

 describe the attributes/properties of
triangles and quadrilaterals using concrete
objects or models;
 identify and describe triangles according to
sides and angles; and
 identify and describe the different kinds of
quadrilaterals: square, rectangle,
parallelogram, trapezoid, and rhombus.

Lesson TRIANGLES AND

1 QUADRILATERALS

Jumpstart

Aron encounters these road signs, first then

What do these signs mean? What should Aron do in each sign?

What kind of polygon are the faces of the said signs?

Discover

In a plane figure, formed by three line segments,

shown by the first road sign is called a triangle. A triangle has
three sides, three vertices and three angles. The side upon which
a triangle is supposed to stand is its base. The angle opposite the
base is the vertex angle. Triangles are named by their three
vertices which are the endpoints of the line segments.

The symbol “ ” is used to represent triangle. In

naming a triangle, we can put the letters in any order. We can
name the triangle below as: MNO, NOM, or OMN.

N The vertices are point M, point N, point O.

___ ___ ___
The sides are MN, NO, OM.

M O The angles are M, N, and O.

___
MO is the base of MNO.
MNO or N is the vertex angle of MNO.

The sum of the angles of a triangle is 180°.

A polygon with four sides, four angles and four vertices

is called quadrilateral. The shape of quadrilateral can vary thus
there are particular names for the different quadrilaterals. The
second road sign shown above is an example of a quadrilateral.
A B
__ __ __
It is quadrilateral ABCD. AB, BC, CD
and DA are its sides. Points A, B, C,
and D. are its vertices.
D C A and B are consecutive or adjacent
angles.
These are the angles at the endpoints
of side AB.

A and C are opposite angles. What is another pair of adjacent

angles?

__ __
Two sides, AB and BC meeting at the vertex are called adjacent
sides while AB and DC are called opposite sides. What is another
pair of adjacent sides? Opposite sides?

The line segment DB that joins two nonadjacent vertices D and B

is called diagonal. It is not considered as a side of the given
polygon.

The sum of the angles of a quadrilateral is 360°.

Lesson 2 TRIANGLES

Jumpstart
After Aron learned that the signs faces are triangle and
quadrilateral respectively. He likes also to know what kind of
triangle is the first sign?
Can you help him? What kind of triangle is the face of
the road sign?
Do you know the different kinds of triangles?
Discover
Let us help Aron identify what kind of triangle the sign is.
Again, triangles are 3-sided polygons whose sides are line
segments.

Triangles are classified into 3 types according to their sides.

Definition Illustration
A scalene triangle has no sides
equal.

An isosceles triangle has two equal

sides.

An equilateral triangle has three

equal side.

We can also classify triangles into 3 types according to their

angles.

Definition Illustration
A right triangle has a right angle
which measures 90°.
An acute triangle has 3 acute
angles, each measuring less than
90°.
An obtuse angle has an obtuse
angle which measures more than
90°.
Now, can you tell Aron what kind of triangle the sign is according
to the sides? How about according to the angle?

Here are some important statements regarding triangles.

1. The sum of the measures of the angles is 180°.
2. The acute angles of a right triangle are complementary.
3. If two sides of a triangle are congruent, then the base angles
opposite these sides are congruent.
4. If a triangle is a equilateral, then it is equiangular.

Now, Aron asks also what kind of quadrilateral the
face of the sign is.
Will you help him? Do you know also the different
kinds of quadrilaterals? How about their differences?

Discover
We know that a quadrilateral is a polygon with 4
angles, 4 vertices and 4 sides.

Below are some special quadrilaterals.

Definition Illustration

Parallelogram
A quadrilateral with 2 pairs of
parallel sides its opposite sides are
equal. It does not contain a right
angle.
Rectangle
A parallelogram that has 4 right
angles. Its opposite sides are equal.
Rhombus
A parallelogram that has 4 equal
sides. It does not contain a right
angle.

Square
A rectangle that has 4 equal sides
and 4 right angles.
Trapezoid
It has only 1 pair of opposites sides
that are parallel.
