Present Continuous – (also called the Present Progressive) we use the present
continuous to express an action that is happening now. It describes actions that began
in the past and is not finished.

Example: I am working. (now) - the meaning is that I began to study at

sometime in the past and I am not finished studying yet.

We form the present continuous tense by using the verb “to be” and the “ing” form of
the verb (called the present participle). Expressions such as: now, right now, currently,
at the moment, at present, etc… are used to say that the action is in progress now.

Examples: Mr. Levine is making copies right now.

Alfonso is working in his office at the moment.
The sky is getting very dark. (now)
Pierre is driving in the Indy 500 and is currently in 2nd place.

- 42 -

continuous nature of the action.

Examples: David is always eating pizza.

Jacob is always whistling.

Melinda is always biting her nails.

The Present Continuous tense is also used to describe a future action.

Words such as: this week, this month, this year, this spring, this summer, this winter,
this fall, this afternoon, tonight, soon, in the morning, etc… are used to express the
time that you will be doing something.

Examples: I am going to Morocco this fall.

He is leaving tonight.
Walter is returning from Moscow in the morning.
Amanda is going to a ping pong tournament tomorrow.

Past Continuous – (also called the past progressive) we use the past continuous tense
to describe an action that was in progress when something else happened. . We form
the past continuous by using the verb “to be” and the present participle (which is the
“ing” form of the verb). Words such as : while, when, and as are used in most
sentences.

Examples: We were having a picnic when it began to rain.

I was driving to work when it began to snow.
The Cincinnati Reds were winning when the Mets hit a grand slam.
As she was walking to the bus stop she saw four stray dogs.

- 43 -
Future Continuous – (also called the future progressive) we use the future continuous
tense to speak about an action that will be in progress in the future. The action may or
