HISTORY OF DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM – CITY GOVERNMENT OF PARAÑAQUE
Parañaque City Hall is the seat of government of the city of Parañaque in the Philippines. The history
of Parañaque City Hall dates back to the Spanish colonial period when Paranaque was established as a pueblo
or town. The city hall has undergone several transformations and renovations over the years to accommodate
the growing needs of the local government and its constituents. The original Paranaque City Hall was probably
a basic structure that accommodated the municipal government offices and functioned as a gathering place for
local officials. As Paranaque progressed and became more urbanized, the necessity for a bigger and more
modern city hall became evident. In the past few decades, Paranaque City Hall has undergone significant
renovations and expansions to keep pace with the city's growth and development. The current city hall complex
is a modern building that houses various government offices such as the Department of Tourism, meeting
rooms, and public spaces for community events.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Philippines is a government agency tasked with promoting
the country as a tourist destination both locally and internationally. The DOT's history can be traced back to the
early 1950s when the Philippine government recognized the potential of tourism as a key economic driver. In
1956, Republic Act No. 1478 was enacted, creating the Philippine Tourist and Travel Association under the
Department of Commerce and Industry. This marked the beginning of organized efforts to promote tourism in
the country. In 1973, Republic Act No. 9593 established the Department of Tourism as a separate entity from
the Department of Trade and Industry, with the mandate to develop and promote the tourism industry in the
Philippines. Over the years, the DOT has played a crucial role in developing various tourism programs and
initiatives to attract both local and foreign tourists. The department has been involved in marketing campaigns,
infrastructure development, cultural preservation, and environmental conservation efforts to enhance the overall
tourism experience in the Philippines.
One of the DOT's key functions is to collaborate with local government units (LGUs) in promoting
tourism at the grassroots level. LGUs play a vital role in implementing tourism policies and programs within their
respective jurisdictions. The DOT works closely with LGUs to support community-based tourism initiatives,
develop local tourism products, and ensure sustainable tourism practices. In recent years, the DOT has focused
on promoting sustainable and inclusive tourism practices that benefit local communities while preserving the
country's natural and cultural heritage. The department continues to work towards positioning the Philippines
as a premier tourist destination in Asia, showcasing its diverse attractions ranging from pristine beaches and
natural wonders to vibrant festivals and rich cultural heritage.
The Department of Tourism in Parañaque City is responsible for preparing, implementing, and updating
the local tourism development plan and enforcing Tourism Laws, Rules, and Regulations of the city in
coordination with the DOT and its attached agencies. Additionally, it is tasked with promoting and developing
the tourism industry in the city. The Department of Tourism in Parañaque plays a vital role in showcasing the
cultural heritage, natural attractions, and tourism potential of the city to both local and international visitors. Over
the years, the department has implemented various programs and initiatives to boost tourism, such as
organizing festivals, cultural events, and promoting sustainable tourism practices. Through partnerships with
local businesses, stakeholders, and government agencies, the Department of Tourism in Parañaque continues
to work towards enhancing the city's reputation as a premier tourist destination in the Philippines.
