COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is implemented through lectures and practicum activities. The lecture discusses the
biotic and abiotic components, specific characteristics, energy flows, material cycles, productivity,
sampling techniques and analysis of abiotic and biotic data of tropical freshwater (lotic and lentic),
estuary, and sea (intertidal, sub tidal and deep sea) ecosystems. Practical activities include
introducing tools and demonstrating the use of tools for sampling biota and measuring abiotic
parameters of aquatic ecosystems; determine the community structure and abiotic environment of
the river, lake, and the intertidal zone. Data analysis is done using Microsoft Excel and Primer
software. Practical implementation of ecosystem based-case method (EB-CM) in the Bedadung
river, the Ranu Klakah lake, and the interidal zone of Bama Beach Baluran National Park whose
results are presented in the form of reports and power point.
