SKIMMING

DEFINITION
Skimming is a reading technique that uses rapid eye movements to move quickly and find
keywords in a text. Skimming tells you what general information is in a section more time
efficient.

This capability is especially useful as a preview for detailed reading or when reviewing heavy

reading content. You can use skimming to review chapters of your textbook or to review long

readings and then decide if you need to read one section more seriously than the other. For

example, during an exam, you can quickly find the gist of the whole reading just by speed

reading. This is especially useful when you have to complete a paragraph exam without

feeling pressed for time

How is 'skimming' different to 'scanning'?

Skimming is used to obtain the gist (the overall sense) of a piece of text.
E.g. Use skimming to get the gist of a page of a textbook to decide whether it is useful
and should therefore be read more slowly and in more detail.
Scanning is used to obtain specific information from a piece of text.
E.g. Use scanning to find detailed information question based on the questions on the
reading text.
