This document provides an overview of basketball referee signals and violations versus fouls. It defines violations as rule breaks like traveling or stepping out of bounds, while fouls involve physical contact or abusive language. The importance of knowing referee signals is explained, as they allow non-verbal communication between players and officials to counteract crowd noise. Five common signals are then enumerated - including personal fouls like holding, illegal screens, and hand checking as well as violations like traveling, 3 seconds in the lane, and double dribbling. Brief descriptions are provided for each.
