Thermodynamics Tutorial Sheet

The document is a tutorial sheet on thermodynamics that contains 8 problems. It provides definitions for the change in internal energy (E) in terms of heat (Q) and work (W). It then lists several thermodynamic problems involving ideal gases and phase changes of substances. The problems calculate various thermodynamic properties including work, heat, internal energy, temperature, pressure, volume, and entropy during processes like isothermal expansion/compression and phase changes.

1.The change in 𝐸𝑖𝑛𝑡 for any transition between two equilibrium states, can be defined by

a) 𝐸 = 𝑄 − 𝑊
b) 𝐸 = 𝑄 + 𝑊

Under which initial assumptions is equation a) and b) defined?

2. A gas is compressed at a constant pressure of 0.800 atm from 9.00 L to 2.00 L. In the process, 400 J of
energy leaves the gas by heat.
a) What is the work done on the gas? [567𝐽 𝑜𝑟 − 567𝐽]
b) What is the change in its internal energy? [ 167𝐽]

3. Heat is added to 2 mol of an ideal monatomic gas confined to a cylinder with a movable piston at one end.
The gas expands quasi-statically at a constant temperature of 600 K until its volume increases from 3V to 6V.

a) What is the change in internal energy of the gas?

b) How much work does the gas do? [6915.40J or -6915.40J]
c) How much heat is added to the gas? [6915.40J]
d) Calculate the change in entropy? [11.53J/K]

4. One mole of an ideal gas does 3 000 J of work on its surroundings as it expands isothermally to a final
pressure of 1.00 atm and volume of 25.0 L. Determine
a) the initial volume [0.00765 m3]
b) the temperature of the gas. [ 305K]

5. A 1.00-kg block of aluminum is heated at atmospheric pressure so that its temperature increases from
22.0°C to 40.0°C. Find
a) the work done on the aluminum, [ -48.6mJ or 48.6mJ]
b) the energy added to it by heat, [16.2 kJ]
c) the change in its internal energy. [16.2 kJ]

6. When 2.00 g of water at 100°𝐶 changes from the liquid to the gas phase at atmospheric pressure, its
change in volume is 2.5 × 10−3 . (𝐿𝑉 = 2260000𝐽/𝐾𝑔)

a) How much heat must be added to vaporize the water? [668j]

b) How much work is done by the water against the atmosphere in its expansion? [252.5J or -252.5J]
(c) What is the change in the internal energy of the water? [415.5J]

7. Heat is slowly added to a 500𝑔 chunk of ice at 0℃ until it completely melts into water at the same
temperature. What is the entropy change of the ice? (𝐿𝑓 = 334000𝐽/𝐾𝑔) [611.40J/K]

8. A gas is taken through the cyclic process described in Figure below.

(a) Find the net energy transferred to the system by heat during one complete cycle.

[12.0 kJ]

(b) If the cycle is reversed, that is, the process follows the path ACBA, what is the net

energy input per cycle by heat? [-12.0kJ]
