PLACES IN A CITY
ART GALLERY: a building where works of art can be seen by the public
BRIDGE:
a structure that is built over a river, road, or railway to allow people and vehicles to
cross from one side to the other
CASTLE: a large strong building, built in the past by a ruler or important person to
protect the people inside from attack
CITY CENTRE: the central part of a city
FACTORY: a building or set of buildings where large amounts of goods are made using
machines
FOUNTAIN: a stream of water that is forced up into the air through a small hole
HOUSING ESTATE: an area containing a large number of houses or apartments built
close together at the same time
INDUSTRIAL STATE: an area on the edge of a town or city specially designed for
factories and businesses
MARKET: an open area, building, or event at which people gather to buy and sell
goods or food
MUSEUM: a building where objects of historical, scientific, or artistic interest are kept
OUTSKIRTS: the areas that form the edge of a town or city
PALACE: a large house that is the official home of a king, queen, or other person of
high social rank
PARK:
a large area of land with grass and trees, usually surrounded by fences or walls, and
specially arranged so that people can walk in it for pleasure or children can play in it
PORT: a city or town that has a harbor (= sheltered area of water where ships can
load or unload) on the sea or a river, or the harbor itself
SKYSCRAPER: a very tall building in a city
SQUARE: an area of approximately square-shaped land in a city or a town, often
including the buildings that surround it
STATUE: an object made from a hard material, especially stone or metal, to look like a
person or animal
SUBURBS: an area on the edge of a large town or city where people who work in the
town or city often live
THEATRE: a building, room, or outside structure with rows of seats, from which
people can watch a performance or other activity
TOWN HALL: a building in which local government officials and employees work and
have meetings
