The Mayan city of Copán

The ancient Mayan site of Copán is regarded as one of the most artistic and important examples of the Mayan
civilization. Located in the Rio Copán Valley of western Honduras, close to the Guatemalan border, this
ancient Central American site is of great historical significance. At the peak of the Mayan civilization, Copán
was considered to be one of the major Mayan capitals, certainly the biggest and most powerful one in the
southeastern region of their kingdom.
Although the ruins were discovered in the 1570s by Spanish surveyor Diego García del Palacio, it was not
until the nineteenth century that they were excavated and gained worldwide attention. Since then, excavations
have found evidence that the site was occupied around 4000 years ago. Today Copán is highly regarded not
only for the beauty and skilled workmanship of its buildings and sculptures, but also for developing
knowledge in the field of astronomy. Unsurprisingly, given its importance archaeologically, it has enjoyed
UNESCO world heritage status since 1980.
Essentially, Copán is made up of a central complex, surrounded by other less important ones. The main
complex consists of the Acropolis (the royal complex at the heart of the site) and five plazas. The Monument
Plaza is one of the most spectacular parts of this complex and houses nine famous tall sculptured stone
monuments known as ‘stelae’, the Hieroglyphic Stairway and also a well-preserved ball court. Famous for
being decorated with the longest-known Mayan inscription, the 62-stepped Hieroglyphic Stairway is a must-
see for anyone interested in ancient scripts. There are over 1800 ‘glyphs’ or carvings, on the staircase, making
the longest known Mayan inscription. .
Archaeological excavations at the site still continue to this day, unearthing further Mayan structures hidden
for centuries. Who knows what further treasures lie undiscovered?
