Activity 2 Minimization

The document presents a linear programming problem to determine the optimal combination of two vitamin supplements that minimizes cost while meeting vitamin requirements. The supplements contain different amounts of three vitamins and have different costs per gram. The problem is modeled using an LP formulation and solved using the simplex method through three simplex tableaus. The optimal solution is to use 12 units of supplement 1 at a minimum cost of 60 pesos.

ACTIVITY 2- FINALS
(MINIMIZATION)

Solve the following LP problem by the simplex method.

1. The poultry farmer must supplement the vitamins in the feeds he buys. He is
considering two supplements, each of which contains the feed required but in
different amounts.
The vitamin content per gram of the supplements is given in the following table:

Vitamin Supplement 1 Supplement 2

1 2 1
2 2 9
3 2 3
Supplement 1 costs 5 pesos per gram and Supplement 2 costs 4 pesos per gram. The
feed must contain at least 12, 36, 24 units of vitamins 1,2 and 3 respectively.
Determine the combination that has the minimum cost.

LP MODEL: Minimize Cost = 5x+4y

Vitamin 1 = 2x+1y ≥ 12
Vitamin 2 = 2x+9y ≥ 36
Vitamin 3 = 2x+3y ≥ 24
Non-negativity= x≥0; y≥0

STANDARD FORM: Minimize Cost = 5x+4y

Subject to:
Vitamin 1 = 2x+1y-S1= 12
Vitamin 2 = 2x+9y-S2= 36
Vitamin 3 = 2x+3y-S3= 24
Non-negativity: x, y, S1, S2, S3 ≥ 0

Initial Simplex Tableau:

1 X Y S1 S2 S3 Sol’n

Therefore, the poultry farmer that feed required must combine 12 units of supplement 1 with
the minimum cost of 60 pesos.
