PET LION RETURNED TO THE OWNER

The future for our wildlife

How technology is helping our planet

1.
The World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) stated in their 2020 report that, since 1970, the wildlife on our planet
has (1) by a massive 68%. The reasons for this are largely a result of humans using more and
more natural animal (2) for our homes and businesses as our population increases. The increase
in illegal hunting of, and trade in, protected animals has also had a negative effect. However, there is hope.
2.
Technology has improved to help organisations who aim to protect our wildlife. A (3) problem
for those groups is that the animals they are trying to protect are spread out over such a large area. Take South
Africa’s Balule Nature Reserve in Kruger National Park as one example. The reserve covers over 154 square miles,
so it’s impossible for the rangers to be everywhere at once. This is where technology enters. Live images of the
animals are being (4) on the Internet using camera phones covered with a strong case. Now
thousands of people around the world can watch and warn the rangers if they (5) any unusual
activity, such as seeing fences being broken, or hearing gunshots.
3.
Yet this is just one area where technology is helping protect our wildlife. Environmental scientists are using
satellites and data to watch out for illegal fishing and measure levels of (6) across the planet.
Drones and underwater microphones are being used to study the behaviour of endangered whales, hopefully
giving us information to help their numbers rise again. Rangers can also fit tracking collars onto animals to
help with (7) their movements and understanding them. The WWF is working together with
other organisations, such as Google, to combine images taken by cameras with available data to help them make
decisions more quickly. It wasn’t long ago where the same job was being done using a pen, paper and a GPS and
it took far, far longer.
4.
Now students in classrooms around the world can watch these beautiful animals in their natural habitat and
learn to appreciate them, while also actively helping them. There are still many challenges ahead if we want to
slow down and stop the (8) in our worldwide wildlife populations. But, with technology and
education working together, that challenge may be just a little easier.
