University of Kelaniya
Assignment – Community-based project
Assignment Weightage : 70%
Type : Group Assignment
Background
A community-based project is a means of strengthening a local region in one of many different
ways targeting the welfare of the people involved. Community development empowers community
members and creates stronger and more connected communities. Community-based projects aim
at assisting certain groups within the community while enhancing local social and cultural
activities and improving safety conditions. Further, some development initiatives aim to assist
segments of the population who are in need of social services. There are different community-
based programs conducted by the society focusing on education and community empowerment,
gender equality, early childhood development, cultural exchange, medical support, environmental
conservation etc. Additionally, certain community-based initiatives are carried out with a focus on
sustainable development objectives and corporate social responsibilities. Sri Lanka is largely
concentrating on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how they enhance the lives of
people while preserving the environment. It is evident that there are multiple areas that require
community development in Sri Lankan society that need to be addressed promptly. Therefore, it
is vital to design and execute projects that support SDGs.
The Business capstone course unit has initiated “iVolunteer”, a community-based program
related to Sustainable Development Goals and Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) to ensure
community development in the country. Students are required to identify an area that requires
