Frome Technical High School. This topic was selected because in today’s society overweight is a
significant health issue that affects individuals of all ages especially teenagers. This investigation
seeks to acquire the percentage of overweight students at the mentioned institution and
suggest possible solutions for the problem.

 Suggests ways to help or prevent students from becoming overweight

Key Term

Overweight - Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation
that presents a risk to health. A body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight, and
over 30 is obese.

BMI – (Body Mass Index) an approximate measure of whether someone is over- or

underweight, calculated by dividing their weight in kilograms by the square of their height in
metres.

Method of Data Collection

In order to properly assess the problem of overweight students at the Frome Technical High
School the investigators have opted to obtain data by surveying the grade 11 classes at the at
the mentioned institution. In order to determine if students are overweight, underweight,
healthy weight or obese the investigator opted to calculate the students BMI. This method of
acquiring information will be effective as the investigators will be acquiring information directly
from the primary source. The investigators chose this method of collecting information because
it is accurate and reliable. A total of 50 students were investigated with the total amount of 329
grade 11 students; these 50 students were chosen at random.

The following table shows the name, age , sex, weight, height and the categories of the
students that were investigated.
NB: BMI is less than 18.5, it falls within the underweight range. If your BMI is 18.5 to <25, it falls
within the healthy weight range. If your BMI is 25.0 to <30, it falls within the overweight range.
If your BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the obesity range.

Presentation of Data
Chart showing the weight of students at the Frome
Technical High School
Healthy weight Overweight
Underweight Extremely Overweight

54%

In the title use the weight of grade 11 students. Be specific.

Instead of using extremely overweight, use obese, as this is the category that you have in the
table above.

You need to incorporate two more graphs.

 One to compare the different categories among the boys

 One to compare the different categories among the girls
Calculations

The percentage of healthy students The percentage of overweight

students
Total number amount of healthy
weight students =27 Total number amount of Overweight
Therefore: students = 11
27÷50×100 = 54% Therefore:
11÷50×100 = 22%

The percentage of underweight The percentage of obese students

students
Total number amount of Extremely
Total number amount of underweight students = 3
Underweight students = 9 Therefore:
Therefore: 3÷50×100 = 6%
9÷50×100 = 18%

27÷50×100 = 54%

NB: 50 represents the total amount of students. And 27 ÷ 50 is being multiplied by 100 because
the investigator wants to find the percentage and percentage means 100. Therefore, the
investigator multiple by 100 to get the percentage.
Analysis of Data

According to the data presented in the pie chart, it can be observed that 54% of the student,
which accounts for 27 out of the 50 students investigated, are classified as having a healthy
weigh. On the other hand, the percentage of overweight students is 22% which is equivalent to
11 students out of the 50. Additionally, the chart indicates that 18% of the students, or 9
students in total, are categorized as Underweight. Furthermore, the Graph reveals that there
are 3 students out of the 50 who are extremely underweight, representing approximately 6% of
that total.

Based on the provided information, it can be concluded that there are 36% more students with
a healthy weight compared to those who are underweight, resulting in a total of 16 students
out of the 50 investigated being classified as healthy weight. Moreover, it can be deduced that
there are 7 more underweight students than extremely underweight students, which accounts
for 6% of the total.
Discussion

During the course of this investigation, the investigators had not anticipated encountering such
a small number of overweight students. However, the data collected has contradicted the
investigator’s initial expectations, revealing a significant proportion of students who maintain a
healthy weight. Despite the investigator’s assumptions being proven incorrect, this investigation
has provided valuable new insights, leaving the investigator highly content with the obtained
results.
Conclusion

Based on the findings of the investigation, it can be concluded 22% of the 50 students that were
examined are classified as overweight. Which account for a total of 11 students. 54% of the 50
students which I’d equivalent to 27 students, have a healthy weigh.
