CONTENTS:
FIRST PERIOD
CALCULATION INVOLVING POWERS (SQUARES, SQUARE ROOTS, CUBE AND
CUBE ROOTS)
SQUARES OF NUMBERS
Square of number is the result of multiplying a number by itself. E.g. 25 = 5× 5, hence 25
is the squared number of 5.
A square root is also the number when multiplied by itself gives the required number 64.
5× 5 can be written in it’s index or exponent or power form as 5², thus 5² = 5× 5= 25.
Note also that 64 could have been written under the square root sign,
SQUARE ROOTS OF NUMBERS

EXAMPLES

1. Find the squares of these expressions (i) (9²)² (ii) (3⅓)². (iii) 1.5². (iv) 0.02²
SOLUTION

(iii)
(iv)

2. Evaluate 1.5²
SOLUTION

Therefore:

SQUARE ROOTS OF NUMBERS

EXAMPLES

Find the square roots of the following expressions (iv)

SOLUTION
EVALUATION
Evaluate each of the following:
1 1
1a. 0.42 × 0.12 2a. √5 + √12
16 4

3. The length of a square is 17.6cm. What is the area of the square?

ASSIGNMENT

SECOND PERIOD
FINDING THE SQUARE ROOT OF NUMBERS USING PRIME FACTOR METHOD

1. Find the square root of the following numbers using prime factors method:

a) 9604. b) 1024
SOLUTION
b).
a). 2 1 024
2 9 604 2 512
2 4 802 2 256
2 128
7 2 401
7 343 2 64
2 32
7 49
2 16
7 7
1 2 8
∴ √9 604 = 2 4
2 2
√2 × 2 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7
1
= √(2 × 7 × 7) × (2 × 7 × 7)
∴ √1 024 =
= 2 × 7 × 7 = 2 × 49 = 98
√2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2
= √(2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2) × (2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2)
=2×2×2×2×2 = 32
