Operating panel The operating panel board D1 is part of the operating key and switch matrix.
board D1 in the con- The status of the operating keys and switches is forwarded via board D2 to
trol unit (BDE) board D4. D4 serves as the interface to the XCN network. All operating sig-
nals are controlled directly by the XCU system controller. A selected function
is enabled by the XCU only if there is no error present and the system is not
disabled.
LED’s are integrated in the touch-sensitive switches. When the switches are
actuated, the LED’s are activated by board D4 of the system controller XCU
via the XCN network.
Notice: The function of the operating keys, switches and the LED’s can be tested
individually with the service PC.
I/O board D2 Safety relay K1 and auxiliary safety relay K2 are located on board D2. K1
switches on the power supply (+24V P1) for both DC motors M1 diaphragm
plates and M9 grid drive and the power supply (+24V P2) for DC motors M3
clamping jaws, M4 cassette lift and M2 cassette transport.
If an error is present, the system controller XCU deenergizes the corre-
sponding safety relay via the XCN network and interface processor board D4
of the spotfilm device.
All other voltages for the spotfilm device are generated by the switching
power supplies on board D2.
Interface processor D4 is the interface for the spotfilm device with the XCN network. It is desig-
board D4 nated as the terminal station. The termination resistor is programmed via
jumper JP4 on board D2.
All functions of the spotfilm device are activated via board D4. Conversely
the status of all the operating switches, drives and the current position of the
drives is forwarded to the XCU system controller. On D4, the voltage values
of actual value potentiometer R3 (position of the clamping jaws), R4 (posi-
tion of the cassette lift) and R9 (position of the grid) are converted from ana-
log to digital values and forwarded to the system controller.

Mechanical construction 3
Clamping jaws The clamping jaws transport the inserted cassette into the various positions:
- Load position
- Park position
- Exposure positions
The mechanism consists of two movable clamping jaws. The clamping jaws
can be moved in opposite directions for loading or unloading or both in the
same direction for exposures that are vertically subdivided. Toothed belts
are attached to both clamping jaws. The toothed belt of the head-end clamp-
ing jaw is driven by DC motor M2 cassette transport. The motor assists in
positioning the cassette along the width. The toothed belt on the foot-end of
the clamping jaw is not connected to a motor drive. It runs freely along the
width during cassette transport. Encoder B2 is mechanically coupled to this
belt and acquires the speed and position.

The transport belt of the head-end clamping jaw is driven by DC motor M2. It
is made of a coarse rubber material.
The follower belt on the foot-end clamping jaw has no motor drive. It runs
freely along the width during cassette transport. Encoder E2 of the cassette
transport is mechanically coupled to the axle of the deflection pulley and is
driven by the cassette.
By running the drive at the upper belt and measuring the position at the
lower belt via encoder E2, the lag between the cassette drive and the cas-
sette position is rendered ineffective. This ensures an accuracy of +/-
0.28mm in cassette positioning.

Loading procedure When the cassette is loaded into the slot, light barrier U1 "Load" is inter-
rupted.
LED B7ge D2 is "off".
Clamping jaw drive M3 is activated for a defined period of time and the
clamping jaws open to maximum position.
If this time is exceeded, there is a "timeout". An error message is displayed
and drive M3 is automatically switched off.
LED B23ge D2 "on", clamping jaw movement enabled.
LED B22ge D2 "on", motor M3 activated.
After a brief pause, the clamping jaws move toward the inserted cassette.
LED B24ge D2 "on", clamping jaw movement enabled.
LED B21ge D2 "on", motor M3 activated.
The cassette is held by the clamping jaws. As long as light barrier U1 "Load"
is still interrupted when the clamping jaws close on the cassette, cassette
transport begins. DC motor M2 transports the cassette into the park position
within a defined period of time.
LED B28ge D2 "on", cassette transport motor M2 "on" park position direc-
tion.
If the time is exceeded, a "timeout" occurs. An error message is displayed
and the cassette transport motor M2 automatically switches off. During cas-
sette transport, the clamping jaw drive remains switched on to compensate
for tolerances in the parallelism of the clamping jaws.
The cassette now interrupts light barrier U2 "Park". DC motor M2 cassette
transport and motor M3 clamping jaws are switched off.
LED B9ge D2 "off", light barrier U2 "Park" is interrupted.
LED B31ge D2 "off", DC motor cassette transport M2 "off".
LED B24ge D2 "off", DC motor M3 clamping jaws "off".
Format acquisition 3
Cassette height The transport belt of the upper clamping jaw starts to run as soon as the cas-
sette interrupts light barrier U1" Load".
LED B7ge D2 goes "off" when the cassette interrupts light barrier U1.
The clamping jaws move symmetrically toward the cassette. The actual
value potentiometer R3 which is mechanically connected to the clamping
jaws, changes its value until the clamping jaws are closed firmly on the cas-
sette.
The actual value acquired is converted by the analog/digital converter and
compared with the adjustment value.
This value is used to calculate the height of the inserted cassette.

Cassette width DC motor M2 transports the inserted cassette from the loading position into
the park position.
Encoder E2 begins counting the increments for the cassette width as soon
as the cassette exits light barrier U1"Load".
LED B7ge D2 goes "on", light barrier U2 is not interrupted.
Encoder E2 stops counting as soon as the U2 "Park" light barrier is inter-
rupted by the cassette.
LED B9ge D2 goes "off", the cassette interrupts light barrier U2.
Every encoder increment corresponds to 0.28 mm in length. The cassette
width is calculated directly from the number of increments.
Cassette formats which are not included in the cassette program are not
within the tolerances for the A/D height values or incremental width values
and cannot be recognized.
These cassettes are automatically moved from the park position into the
load position.
Exception: the 13 x 18 cm wide cassette cannot be retained by the clamp-
ing jaw mechanism. Therefore, this cassette is not included in the cassette
program.
Diaphragm plates 3
Cable-operated The diaphragm plates are mechanically connected via a cable and a chain.

All basic system drives are positioned via actual value potentiometers R5 -
R8. They are mechanically coupled to the respective movements. The wiper
voltage is directly proportional to the movement position.
Three-phase motors M5 tilt drive, M6 table longitudinal drive and M7 spotfilm
device power assist drive in the longitudinal direction are provided with a
permanent magnetic brake which stops movement when power is off.
The spotfilm device power assist motor M7 controls the counterbalance car-
riage via a chain. Two steel cables running over pulleys turn with the move-
ment. If one of the cables breaks, the safety clamping mechanism responds
and mechanically blocks movement.
The DC motor for table transverse movement is positioned via actual value
potentiometer R8.

Processor board D4 D4 is the interface for the basic unit to the XCN network. Board D4 provides
interface the network connection. D4 is designated as the transfer station, since the
spotfilm device is also connected via board D4.
Board D4 controls all the functions of the basic system. It is compatible with
board D4 in the spotfilm device. Conversely, the status of all safety switches,
system disable switches, drives and the actual drive positions are forwarded
to the XCU system controller. The voltage values of actual value potentiome-
ters R1 - R8 are converted by the A/D converter on board D4 and are for-
warded to the XCU via the system controller.

S1, S2 Service switches can be assigned via the service PC for every
movement of the basic system. This allows a drive to be activated
independently of the system controller XCU.
Table longitudinal drive M6 is operated via switches A2- S14 in the head-
ward direction and switches A2- S15 in the footward direction on the com-
mand panel.
Notice: The function of both operating switches can be tested with the service PC.
The control signal is forwarded from control panel board D1via I/O board D2
and spotfilm device interface board D4 to the system controller XCU.
If the system is not disabled and no error is present for the drive, the system
controller XCU activates rotation contactor K4 footward or K5 headward via
the basic system computer D4 and board D3. Safety relay K1 (power supply
for drive M6) is energized.
Movement activated:
K1 "on": LED B24rt D3 "off".
headward: LED B36ge D3 "on".
footward: LED B35ge D3 "on".
Tabletop travel in the longitudinal direction depends upon the room size and,
for rooms with low ceilings, on the system tilt angle. When the specified
safety distances are not observed, system movements will automatically be
disabled without any error message; however with the message "disabled".
Notice: Both service switches S1 and S2 on board D3 can be assigned to the table
longitudtinal movement using the service PC. This allows movement to be
controlled directly from board D3.
Notice: Safety relay K1 is always degenergized after the system has been success-
fully initialized.
Tilt drive M5 is operated via switches D1- S11, S12 tilt and D1- S13, S14 tilt-
ing up on the control panel.
Notice: The function of both operating switches can be tested with the service PC.
The control signal is forwarded from control panel board D1 via I/O board D2
and spotfilm device interface board D4 from board D2 to the system control-
ler XCU.
If the system is not disabled and no error is present for the drive, the system
controller XCU activates the rotation contactor K2 tilt or K3 tilting up via the
basic system computer D4 and board D3. Safety relay K1 (power supply for
motor drive M5) is energized. When movement is actuated, brake Y5 is
released.
In order to provide a soft tilting movement, resistor A4- R12 is looped into
Phase L1 by activation of relay K8. .
Movement activated:
K1 "on": LED B24rt D3 "off".
Tilt: LED B33ge D3 "on".
Raise: LED B34ge D3 "on".
Y5 released: LED B48ge D3 "on".

Notice: The function of both operating switches can be tested with the service PC.
The control signal is forwarded from control panel board D1 via I/O board D2
and spotfilm device interface board D4 and from board D2 to the system
controller XCU.
If an error is present, system controller XCU activates the rotation direction
contactor K6 footward or K7 headward via board D3 and basic system com-
puter D4. Safety contactor K1 (power supply for motor drive M7) is ener-
gized. Once movement is activated, magnetic brakes Y3 and Y4 are
released, as well as brake Y7 at motor M7.
Movement activated:
K1 "on": LED B24rt D3 "off".
headward: LED B38ge D3 "on".
footward: LED B37ge D3 on".
Y7 released: LED B47ge D3 "on".

Notice: Safety relay K1 is always deenergized once the system has been success-
fully initialized.
Table transverse motor drive M8 is operated via control panel switches A2-
S16 on physician’s side and A2- S17 on the wall side.
Notice: The function of both operating switches can be tested with the service PC.
The control signal is forwarded from operating panel board D1 via I\O board
D2 and the spotfilm device interface board D4 to the system controller XCU.
If no error is present for the motor drive, system controller XCU activates
rotation movement via basic system interface board D4 and board D3
toward the wall side or the physician’s side. When movement is activated,
magnetic brake Y18 releases and LED B46ge on board D3 goes "off."
When movement is enabled, LED B18ge D3 goes "on".
If the motor is controlling movement in the direction of the physician’ side,
LED B19ge D3 is on.
Movement activated:
wall side: LED B16ge D3 "on"

cian’s side:
Notice: Both service switches S1, S2 on board D3 of the basic system can be
assigned to table transverse movement using the service PC.
This allows you to control movement independent of the system controller
XCU and directly from board D3.

The copper prefilters in the AN system version are controlled via operating
key S20 in the control unit (BDE) board D1. In systems BN - DN, the copper
filters are activated when the organ program is selected.
Two solenoids F1 and F2 move both the copper filters 0.1mm Cu and
0.2mm Cu into the beam path.
The prefiltration selected is displayed on the 7-segment display on the con-
trol panel (refer to pages 1-15 of the Function Description):

The radiation field size is limited vertically and horizontally by the diaphragm
plates.
This limits the exposure field of the image intensifier during fluoroscopy or
radiography.
This requirement is also satisfied when the SID changes (potentiometer R1).
Potentiometer Z66 R1 "Height" and Z66 R2 "Width" acquires the actual val-
ues of the collimator blade positions.
Positioning the dia- Actual value potentiometesr R1 collimator height and R2 collimator width are
phragm plates mechanically coupled to the movement of the diaphragm plates. D4 converts
the voltage values of the actual value potentiometer and forwards them to
the system controller XCU.
System controller XCU calculates the nominal positions. If there is no error
present for any of the drives, the system controller XCU will activate the M1
"height" and M2 "width" drives via the basic system interface board D4 and
board D3.
