In the heart of Tagbilaran City, there once stood a majestic tree, its branches
reaching towards the heavens like a verdant cathedral.
Its leaves, shimmering like emeralds in the sunlight, offered a welcome respite from
  the tropical heat.
              HISTORY OF BARANGAY
One summer afternoon, in the late 18th centuries, a group of Spanish friars, their
robes rustling in the breeze, approached an old man sitting beneath the tree’s
  shade.
Hard of hearing, the man mistook their inquiry about the place’s name for a
question about the magnificent tree before him. “DAO,” he replied, his voice
  echoing the tree’s rustling leaves.
From then on, the name stuck. Both Spaniards and locals began referring to the
place as Dao, forever linking it to the symbol of its beauty and bounty.
Though the tree is no more, its legacy endures. Its shade, once a physical refuge,
now lives on in the memories of the people who call Dao home.

Bordered by Cogon in the north, Dampas in the east, Manga in the south, and

  faith.
While Catholicism once held sway over the hearts of most residents, today, Dao
embraces a tapestry of beliefs, woven together by the threads of shared
experience and love for their verdant namesake.
Transitioning to the 1930s, the name “Dao” carried echoes of the past, symbolizing the
dao tree and centuries gone by. From a predominantly Catholic, agrarian community,
Dao transformed into a bustling center of commerce, riding the wave of Tagbilaran City’s
development in the 1960s. The once land-tied residents found new opportunities in the
city’s emerging factories, marking an era of growth and prosperity.
Barangay Dao wasn’t always a bustling hub, you see. It was once just fields, Lola would
say,we’d walk to kapilya for Mass, a whole procession of us singing hymns that echoed
through the valley. Back then, the Dao tree was our landmark, a giant that shaded our
fiestas and whispered secrets to the wind.
Today, Barangay Dao stands proud with over 8,800 residents, its streets pulsating with
the rhythm of commerce, adorned with various businesses such as Island City Mall etc.,
small stores, and restaurants. The Tagbilaran City Integrated Bus Terminal serves as a
vital lifeline, connecting Dao to the city’s transportation network.
Unraveling deeper roots, Dao’s story intertwines with the pre-colonial era, evidencing
human settlements dating back to the Neolithic period. Indigenous Butuanons, under
revered “datus,” cultivated the land, fostering a harmonious existence of agriculture and
hunting. The Spanish arrival in the 16th century brought about profound changes,
shaping the landscape through the encomienda system, Christianity, and the iconic Dao
Church’s construction. And now we can see the Dao church on front the Dao barangay.
American colonial rule in the early 20th century ushered in modernization, introducing
public schools and infrastructure.Dao has Dao Elementary School along with gym,
basketball court and some tennis court.
World War II cast its shadow, turning Dao into a theater of conflict, leaving indelible
marks on local narratives. Post-independence, Barangay Dao continued evolving,
seamlessly integrating into Tagbilaran City’s social and economic fabric. Challenges
such as urbanization, rising costs, and a shifting economic landscape were met with
resilience as Dao celebrated its rich cultural heritage through traditional festivals,
dances, and folk songs.
The annual festival on May 30 attests to Dao’s cultural vibrancy, weaving a rich tapestry
of tradition. Despite challenges, the barangay remains a living testament to resilience,
tradition, and the ever-evolving spirit of progress.
In the contemporary setting, Barangay Dao stands as a vibrant community with its own
unique character. Guided by Barangay Captain Hon. Alberto Puagang and the
Sangguniang Barangay Members, the community thrives for improvements. Religious
tolerance is embraced, accommodating other religious minorities, and environmental
initiatives underscore Dao’s commitment to sustainability.

wala gayud naglisod. Nat-unan namo nga magsalig sa usa’g usa, magtabang-
