Modern Social Media Makes People Less Social

The document contains two perspectives on whether modern social media makes people less socially active: 1. The Affirmative side argues that social media decreases in-person communication and social engagement, can increase loneliness and depression, and distracts people from real-life interactions. 2. The Negative side rebuts the Affirmative arguments and instead defines the motion as the Internet helping people become more socially active. It argues that social media enables video calls and engagement with distant connections, makes it easy to make new friends, and changes communication in a socially active way.

_Affirmative_

Good afternoon Madam Chairman, the Affirmative and Negative team, and everyone attending
debate. My name is Nguyet Minh, I’m the first speaker of the Affirmative side. My team has 3
members: me, Ming Chou and Ming Anh. As you have known, the motion for our debate is
“Modern social media makes people less socially active”. The definition of the word “social
media” is “websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to
participate in social networking”. So, we, as the Affirmative side, believe that the statement is
true. Today, as the first speaker of the Affirmative side, I’ll be telling bout my opinions. Our
second speaker will continue my points and our third speaker will give you some examples and
sum up our team’s case.

Now let us go to my rebuttals:

These days, people are using too much Internet, I must admit. But, I think they haven’t
known the harm of using it too much. So I’ll tell you bout it.

-Firstly, focusing too much on phones or social media will make less communication between
you and the others. More specifically, you focus on the Internet too much and don’t go out to
communicate with friends and people; instead you just sit and play games on your phone or do
whatever with it, and that makes you less “activated”.

-Moreover, too much social-media-usage can increase people’s depression and loneliness. Even
though we can make video calls or chat by using social media, I don’t think it could help
depressed people feel any better. Some researchers followed 169 people during the first two
years of their internet use to determine if this new technology made them more social or less
social, and they found out greater use of the Internet was associated with declines in
participants’ communication with family members in the household, declines in the size of their
social circle, and increases in their depression and loneliness.

-In addition, a study conducted by Flashgap, a photo-sharing application with more than
150.000 users, found that 87% of mil/len/ni/al admitted to missing out on a conversation
because they were distracted by their phone. Meanwhile, 54% said they experience a fear of
missing out if not checking social networks. That means the Internet is taking people away from
their REAL life and kind of “calling” them to enter the unreal world in social media and Internet.
Therefore, dear Madam Chairman, the Affirmative and Negative team, and everyone attending,
in conclusion, we believe that modern social media DOES make people less socially active.
Thank you everyone!

_Negative_

Good afternoon Madam Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, the Affirmative and
Negative team. I’m Nguyet Minh, the first speaker of the Negative side. There are 3 members in
our team: me, Ming Chou and Ming Anh. The motion for our debate is “modern social media
makes people less socially active”. So first of all, thanks Affirmative team for your ideas and
opinions, but we, as the Negative side, don’t believe that your definition and opinions are true.
They defined the motion as “”. But I don’t agree to that definition. So we define the motion as
“the Internet helps making people become more socially active”. So first of all, thanks
Affirmative team for your ideas and opinions, but we, as the Negative side, don’t believe that
your opinions are true. Today as the first speaker of the Negative team, I will now rebut and tell
about my points. Our second speaker will continue my points and our third speaker will then
give some examples and sum up our team’s opinions.

For now let us go to my rebuttals:

-The first speaker of the Affirmative side has said that people won’t have time to talk with
everyone in society, this is not true because we can connect with each other through video
calls.

Now let us go to my opinions:

+Help engagement:

-Firstly, social media helps us to engage more with people just by a few taps on a screen to
make video calls. Like a student who studies abroad. They definitely can’t meet their family and
relatives face-to-face. But social media can help. They can make video calls to talk to each other
and see each other’s face.

+Make friends:

-Moreover, nowadays, people can make friends with each other through social media. They can
make friends on Facebook, or on Instagram…a lot. According to Pew Research Center, more
than eight-in-ten social media-using teens say social media makes them more connected to the
information about what is happening in their friends’ lives and 70 percent of them say these
social platforms are better to connect them to their friends’ feelings.
+ Social media change the way we communicate

Therefore, in conclusion, dear Madam Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, the Aff
and Nega team, we believe that social media can make us become more socially active, not like
what the statement had said. Thank you for listening!
