Section 5 Working Off Line
This short exercise demonstrates that an off line configuration file can be
prepared prior to connecting to an existing VESDA network. In the following
exercise, one LaserPLUS and one display are to be added to an existing
VESDA network. This offline configuration file can represent a common set
up which you may use frequently.
Note: The is applicable to VESDAnet connections Only
1. Open an existing file in VSM4

Section 6 Merge & Compare
This feature allows network and device configurations to be compared. In
particular, it supports system auditing by highlighting any configuration
changes since the installed and commissioned system.
This short exercise demonstrates that you are able to work on an existing
VESDA network configuration off-line. When you are ready, you can merge
and compare with a live VESDA network. In this simple exercise, minor
changes are made to or from a live network.
Note: Using the steps below is equivalient for each connection type
1. Open the offline configuration file that you have been working on.

Section 10 Creating a Monitoring Site
All monitored site devices are integrated into a Monitoring structure by
defining all the networks and direct connections that VSM monitors. These
devices can then be grouped by the users into layered floor plans to provide
a full graphical representation of the location of all devices and networks of
devices within the various buildings and facilities being managed.
In the hierarchy of a monitoring structure, there are two main elements: a
Monitoring Site, and a Logical Node. A Monitoring Site is the top level of the
hierarchy, and the logical levels beneath that are Logical Nodes. Both
Monitoring Sites and Logical Nodes are used to group networks and direct
connections.
Floor plan structures are used to represent physical locations and then
VESDA or ICAM devices and networks are associated with the appropriate
locations.
We will run though this example using a VESDAnet but the same applies for
creating Monitoring sites for the other connections types such as MODBUS,
VESDAtalk, etc.
1. Create a new monitoring site
a) Go to menu and select File / New / Monitoring Site
Pg 40 of 57

that can be positioned on different monitors.
1. Open a monitoring site with the monitor browser, event log and the
trend graph of a detector opened as shown below. Click on the
Multiple Monitor icon in the top left corner of the event log window.

position the mouse cursor next to the Multiple Monitor icon (on the
partitions title bar), left-click on the mouse and drag the mouse cursor
onto the main Xtralis VSM4 menu section.
4. Once the event log has been placed back onto the main VSM4 frame,
another instance of Xtralis VSM4 will be opened. Close the additional
Xtralis VSM4 frame if it is not required.

Section 12 Floor Plans
One of the most powerful features of Xtralis VSM4 is the way it can
associate the floor plans of buildings with a VESDA or ICAM system. This
aspect of Xtrlias VSM4 allows for a hierarchical visual monitoring of multiple
buildings on multiple sites.
1. Create a monitoring site with a network and ensure it conatins a
number of Detectors. Rename the locations.
NOTE: Only monitoring sites can have floorplans
2. From the menu bar, select View / Floor Plan
3. From the menu, select Floor Plan / Designer Mode
Note: you need to be logged on as the Designer to be able to select the
Designer model.
4. Right click on Location and insert locations as shown below
Pg 45 of 57
Xtralis VSM4 Training Module – Level 1
5. Double click on the locations to Rename
Note: It is advised to change the site abbreviation to something
meaningful. e.g. Aus for Australia. This abbreviation will appear in
some fault messages.
6. Double click on Australia in the floor plan window to attach a
background image
NOTE: If prompted to save, always click Yes
Pg 46 of 57
Xtralis VSM4 Training Module – Level 1
7. Select Import and specify the file.
NOTE: A folder will be created to store the images in the directory where
this monitoring file is saved. Please do not move or delete images in this
folder once the floor plan is configured.
8. The picture will be displayed as shown below
9. Repeat for Melbourne and Floor plan locations
Pg 47 of 57

Section 13 Registration of VSM4
1. VSM4 has three types of license, each with varying levels of
functionality:
- Full License - This provides all purchased features and
monitoring capacity, with no expiry time.
- Demonstration License - This provides a time period with
which to evaluate or demonstrate a system.
- Evaluation License - This provides a shorter time period with
which to evaluate a system. All VSM4 features can be
accessed immediately and used for a 30 day period. Once
the time limit has expired, it is necessary to request a
Demonstration or Full license in order to continue operating
the software.
Refer to the table below for a summary of the differences between each
license type::
2. Xtralis VSM4’s monitoring capacity is calculated in two ways, via the
concepts of:
- Network Connections – these are calculated based on the
number of VESDAnet or Modbus RS-485 networks being
monitored
- Detector Connections – these are calculated by the
number of VESDA detectors (either on a VESDAnet or
directly via VESDAtalk or VESDAlink), or ICAM detector
(either on Modbus RS-485 or directly via Modbus RS-
232/TCPIP) being monitored.
For reference, the calculation of the required number of Tokens for
each Network Connection or Detector Connection type is as follows:
Networks
• 80 tokens per VESDAnet.
• 80 tokens per MODBUS 485 network.
Detectors
• 20 tokens per VLP, VLS, VLC or VLF in a network.
• 60 tokens per VLF or VLC (RO) connected directly to the monitoring
computer via Serial Port.
• 20 tokens per IFT-1, IFT-4, IFT-6, IFT-8, FT-15, IFT-P via RS-
485/RS-232 Converter.
• 20 tokens per IFT-1, IFT-4, IFT-6, IFT-8, FT-15, IFT-P via TCP/IP.
Pg 53 of 57
Xtralis VSM4 Training Module – Level 1
• 60 tokens per IFT-1, IFT-4, IFT-6, IFT-8, IFT-15 or IFT-P directly
