Contexte :
La coupe du monde de football est une compétition au cours de laquelle certaines

équipes se révèlent au monde. L’exemple du Cameroun lors du mondial de 1990 restera
à jamais gravé en lettres d’or dans les annales du sport roi.

1 The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have shown us all they are one of the top national

football team in the world. They reached the quarter finals and came fifth in the world
cup. When the competition started, most people said, Cameroon doesn’t have any
chance! But at the first match everything changed. The indomitable Lions beat
Argentina (with Maradona) 1- 0 in Milan.

2 The next match was against Romania. Roger Mila, at age 38, one of the oldest player
in the competition, scored two great goals in the last ten minutes! The results: a 2-1

victory for The Indomitable Lions. In their final match in the first round, Cameroon

played against The Soviet Union. They lost 4-0, but it didn’t matter because they were
already in the second round.

3 In the second round they played Columbia. The match went in the extra time, with
the score 0-0. Then in ten minutes everything changed. First, Milla dribbled two men
and calmly put the ball into the net. Then he easily got pass the Columbian goalkeeper

Higuita, and the ball was in the net again! Lions 2, Columbia 1.
4 Next, came the quarter final. Cameroon and England. In the first half, England’s

David Platt scored with a head. But still the Lions attacked. Again it was Milla! He
came on in the goal. Then the referee gave a penalty against England. Milla scored the
goal and Lions were I, front 2-1. Then England got another penalty. The final score was

3-2 to England. Robbie Robson, the England manager generously said “The Lions
played better than England.

5 It was all over. But The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon were the pride of the whole
Africa. They were cheerfully welcomed back in their country. Since then Cameroon has
become a dangerous opponent on the continent and at World Cup tournaments. The
Lions have never stopped roaring.
