LESSON 2.3- DRAFTING FOUNDATION LINES
Pattern making is very essential in making a dress. A basic or
foundation pattern can be done by drafting, a technique or method of
measuring by the given procedure using the measurement chart. Well fitted
garment was based from the drafted pattern with correct and accurate
measurements.

1. Drafting Tools and Materials

a. Tape Measure – is a flexible tape with

metric and English measurement.

b. Ruler – use to draft short straight line

and measure short distance.

c. L-square / Tailor’s square – drafting tool

with dividing measurement used to draw
perpendicular lines and determining
square corners.

d. French curve – used to shape neckline

and armhole of the pattern.

e. Pattern paper / Manila paper – a

brown paper used for pattern making.
If you find it difficult to purchase a
pattern paper or manila paper, you
can use a recycled paper like back of
old calendar in drafting your pattern.

CHECKING YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Direction – Arrange the following in chronological order by writing in

another caravan the correct order of steps.

REMEMBER

Much of the success in garment construction depends on accurate
measurements. Taking body measurement is an important step in
sewing clothes for yourself and for others. Without the right
measurement, the result you get may not be accurate.

• Pattern drafting is where pattern pieces are drawn according to body

measurement which becomes the base to create garments. Drafted
pattern is made to fit a person perfectly and can be adopted to any
type of style.
