PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD
COMMEMORATION OF THE LORD’S ENTRY
INTO JERUSALEM YEAR B LONG FORM
On this day the Church recalls the entrance of Christ the Lord into Jerusalem to accomplish his Paschal
Mystery. Accordingly, the memorial of this entrance of the Lord takes place at all Masses, by means of the
Procession or the Solemn Entrance before the principal Mass or the Simple Entrance before other Masses.
The Solemn Entrance, but not the Procession, may be repeated before other Masses that are usually
celebrated with a large gathering of people.
SECOND FORM: THE SOLEMN ENTRANCE
When a procession outside the church cannot take place, the entrance of the Lord is celebrated inside the
church by means of a Solemn Entrance before the Sunday Principal Masses.
Holding branches in their hands, the faithful outside of the church, at the entrance. The priest, the ministers,
and the faithful, go to this place.
While the priest approaches the appointed the place, the antiphon Hosanna or another chant is sung. Then
the blessing of branches and the proclamation of the Gospel takes place. After the Gospel, the priest
processes solemnly with the ministers and the faithful through the Church to the sanctuary, while a chant is
sung.
Arriving at the altar, the priest venerates it. He then goes to the chair and, omitting the other introductory
rites of the Mass and, if appropriate, the Kyrie, he says the Collect, and then, continues the Mass in the usual
way.
For SUNDAY Masses ONLY

Commentator: Good morning/afternoon/evening brothers and sisters. Today is
Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion. Our presiding celebrant is Rev. Fr.
_________. Please stand.
ANTIPHON Mt 21: 9
Priest: Hosanna to the Son of David, blessed is he who comes in the name of
the Lord, the King of Israel: Hosanna in the highest.
Greetings
Priest: In the name of the Father + and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 1 | 24
People: Amen.
Then the Priest, extending his hands, greets the people, saying:
Priest: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the
communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
People: And with your spirit.
A brief address is given, in which the faithful are invited to participate actively and consciously in the
celebration of this day, in these or similar words:
Priest: Dear brethren (brothers and sisters), since the beginning of Lent
until now we have prepared our hearts by penance and charitable
works.
Today we gather together to herald with the whole Church the
beginning of the celebration of our Lord’s Paschal Mystery, that is
to say, of his Passion and Resurrection. For it was to accomplish this
mystery that he entered his own city of Jerusalem.
Therefore, with all faith and devotion, let us commemorate the
Lord’s entry into the city for our salvation, following in his
footsteps, so that, being made by his grace partakers of the Cross,
we may have a share also in his Resurrection and in his life.
After the address, the Priest says one of the following prayers with hands extended.
Priest: Let us pray.
Almighty ever-living God, sanctify + these branches with your
blessing, that we, who follow Christ the King in exultation, may
reach the eternal Jerusalem through him. Who lives and reigns for
ever and ever.
People: Amen.
Or: Increase the faith of those who place their hope in you, O God, and
graciously hear the prayers if those who call on you, that we, who today
hold high these branches to hail Christ in his triumph, may bear fruit for
you by good works accomplished in him. Who lives and reigns for ever
and ever.
People: Amen.
The priest sprinkles the branches without saying anything.
THE HOLY GOSPEL Mk 11:1-10
The Deacon, or the Priest, then proceeds to the ambo, there he says:
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 2 | 24
Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark
People: Glory to you, O Lord.
Then the Deacon, or the Priest, incenses the book and proclaims the Gospel.
When Jesus and his disciples drew near to Jerusalem,
to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives,
he sent two of his disciples and said to them,"Go into the village
opposite you, and immediately on entering it, you will find a colt
tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. If
anyone should say to you, 'Why are you doing this?' reply, 'The Master
has need of it and will send it back here at once.'"
So they went off and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the
street, and they untied it. Some of the bystanders said to them, "What are
you doing, untying the colt?"They answered them just as Jesus had told
them to,
and they permitted them to do it.
So they brought the colt to Jesus and put their cloaks over it. And
he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others
spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. Those preceding
him as well as those following kept crying out: "Hosanna! Blessed is he
who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our
father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!"
Priest: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Or: Jn 12:12-16
The Deacon, or the Priest, then proceeds to the ambo, there he says:
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John
People: Glory to you, O Lord.
Then the Deacon, or the Priest, incenses the book and proclaims the Gospel.
When the great crowd that had come to the feast heard that
Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took palm branches
and went out to meet him, and cried out: "Hosanna! Blessed
is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel."
Jesus found an ass and sat upon it, as is written: Fear no more, O
daughter Zion; see, your king comes, seated upon an ass's colt. His
disciples did not understand this at first, but when Jesus had been
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 3 | 24
glorified they remembered that these things were written about him and
that they had done this for him.
Priest: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
After the Gospel, a brief homily may be given. Then, to begin the procession, an invitation may be given by a
priest or a deacon or a lay minister, in these of similar words:
Priest: Dear brethren (brothers and sisters), like the crowds who acclaimed
Jesus in Jerusalem, let us go forth in peace.
Or: Let us go forth in peace.
In this latter case, all respond:
People: In the name of Christ. Amen.
The Procession to the church where Mass will be celebrated then sets off in the usual way. If incense is used,
the thurifer goes first, carrying a thurible with burning incense. Then the cross decorated with palm branches
according to local custom, in front of the servers with lighted candles. Then follow the deacon or the lector
carrying the Book of the Gospels, the Priest with the ministers and after them, all the faithful carrying
branches. An appropriate hymn is sung while the procession is ongoing.
When the priest arrives at the altar, he venerates it and, if appropriate, incenses it. Then he goes to the chair,
where he puts off the cope, if he has worn one, and puts on the chasuble. Omitting the other introductory rites of
the Mass and, if appropriate, the Kyrie, he says the Collect, and then, continues the Mass in the usual way.
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 4 | 24
PART TWO -THE MASS
ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Jn 12: 1, 12-13; Ps 24 (23): 9-10
(To be recited only when no Entrance Hymn is sung.)
Priest: Six days before the Passover, when the Lord came into the city of
Jerusalem, the children ran to meet him; in their hands they carried
palm branches and with a loud voice cried out:
*Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, who have come in your
abundant mercy!
After the Procession or the Solemn Entrance the priest begins the Mass with the Collect, or if appropriate, the
Kyrie may also be sung before the collect.
COLLECT
When the hymn is concluded, the priest, with hands joined, says:
Priest: Let us pray.
And all pray in silence with the priest for a while. Then the priest, with hands extended, says:
Priest: Almighty and ever-living God, who has an example of humility for
the human race to follow caused our Savior to take flesh and submit
to the Cross, graciously grant that we may heed his lesson of patient
suffering and so merit a share in his Resurrection. Who lives and
reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and
ever.
People: Amen.
LITURGY OF THE WORD
FIRST READING Is 50: 4-7
Lector: A reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah
The Lord God has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might
know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them.
Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear; and I
have not rebelled, have not turned back.
I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who
plucked my beard. My face I did not shield from buffets and
spitting.
The Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced. I have
set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 22: 8-9, 17-18, 19-20, 23-24
Response: MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU ABANDONED ME?
All who see me scoff at me;
they mock me with parted lips, they wag their heads:
“He relied on the LORD; let him deliver him,
let him rescue him, if he loves him.”
Response: MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU ABANDONED ME?
Indeed, many dogs surround me,
a pack of evildoers closes in upon me;
They have pierced my hands and my feet;
I can count all my bones.
Response: MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU ABANDONED ME?
They divide my garments among them,
and for my vesture they cast lots.
But you, O LORD, be not far from me;
O my help, hasten to aid me.
Response: MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU ABANDONED ME?
I will proclaim your name to my brethren;
in the midst of the assembly I will praise you:
“You who fear the LORD, praise him;
all you descendants of Jacob, give glory to him;
revere him, all you descendants of Israel!”
Response: MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU ABANDONED ME?
SECOND READING Phil 2: 6-11
Lector: A Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians
Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard
equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied
himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and
found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient
to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the
name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every
knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the
earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory
of God the Father.
The Word of the Lord.

Characters:
J – Jesus (Priest)- P - Pilate
N1 – Commentator C – Crowd
N2 – L2 S – Soldier
L(F) – L1 L(M) – Other
The greeting is omitted.
Priest: The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark
The response is omitted.
N1: The feasts of Passover and Unleavened Bread were to be observed in two
days’ time, and therefore the chief priests and scribes began to look for a way
to arrest Jesus by some trick and kill him.
Yet they pointed out,
L(F)/L(M): “Not during the festival, / or the people may riot.”
N2: When Jesus was in Bethany reclining at table in the house of Simon the leper,
a woman entered carrying an alabaster jar of perfume made from expensive
aromatic nard. Breaking the jar, she began to pour the perfume on his head.
Some were saying to themselves indignantly:
L(F): “What is the point of this extravagant waste of perfume?
It could have been sold for over three hundred silver pieces
and the money given to the poor.”
N2: They were infuriated at her.
But Jesus said:
P: “Let her alone. Why do you criticize her?
She has done me a kindness.
The poor you will always have with you
and you can be generous to them whenever you wish,
but you will not always have me.
She has done what she could. By perfuming my body
she is anticipating its preparation for burial.
I assure you,
wherever the good news is proclaimed throughout the world,
what she has done will be told in her memory.”
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 7 | 24
N1: Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve,
went off to the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them.
Hearing what he had to say,
they were jubilant and promised to give him money.
He for his part kept looking for an opportune way to hand him over.
N2: On the first day of Unleavened Bread,
when it was customary to sacrifice the paschal lamb,
his disciples said to him,
L(M): “Where do you wish us to go to prepare the Passover supper for you?”
N2: He sent two of his disciples with these instructions:
P: “Go into the city
and you will come upon a man carrying a water jar.
Follow him. Whatever house he enters, say to the owner,
‘the Teacher asks, Where is my guest room
where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
Then he will show you an upstairs room,
spacious, furnished, and all in order.
That is the place you are to get ready for us.”
N1: The disciples went off. When they reached the city they found it just as he
had told them, and they prepared the Passover supper.
As it grew dark he arrived with the Twelve.
They reclined at table,
and in the course of the meal Jesus said,
P: “I give you my word,
one of you is about to betray me,
yes, one who is eating with me.”
N1: They began to say to him sorrowfully, one by one,
L(M): “Surely not I!”
N1: Jesus said,
P: “It is one of the Twelve—
a man who dips into the dish with me.
The Son of Man is going the way the Scripture tells of him.
Still, accursed be that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It were
better for him had he never been born.”
N1: During the meal he took bread,
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 8 | 24
blessed and broke it and gave it to them, saying:
P: “Take this, this is my body.”
N1: He likewise took a cup,
gave thanks and passed it to them,
and they all drank from it.
He said to them:
P: “This is my blood, the blood of the covenant,
to be poured out on behalf of many.
I solemnly assure you,
I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine
until the day when I drink it in the reign of God.”
N2: After singing songs of praise,
they walked out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus said to them:
P: “Your faith in me shall be shaken,
for Scripture has it, ‘I will strike the shepherd
and the sheep will be dispersed.’
But after I am raised up, I will go to Galilee ahead of you.”
N2: Peter said to him,
L(M): “Even though all are shaken in faith,
it will not be that way with me.”
N2: Jesus answered,
P: “I give you my assurance,
this very night before the cock crows twice,
you will deny me three times.”
N1: But Peter kept reasserting vehemently,
L(M): “Even if I have to die with you, I will not deny you.”
N1: They all said the same.
N2: They went to a place named Gethsemani.
He said to his disciples:
P: “Sit down here while I pray.”
N1: At the same time he took along with him Peter, James and John.
Then he began to be filled with fear and distress.
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 9 | 24
He said to them,
P: “My heart is filled with sorrow to the point of death.
Remain here and stay awake.”
N2: He advanced a little and fell to the ground,
praying that if it were possible this hour might pass him by.
He kept saying,
P: “Abba (O Father),
you have the power to do all things.
Take this cup away from me.
But let it be as you would have it, not as I.”
N1: When he returned he found them asleep.
He said to Peter,
P: “Asleep, Simon?
You could not stay awake even for an hour?
Be on guard and pray that you may not be put to the test.
The spirit is willing but nature is weak.”
N2: Going back again he began to pray in the same words.
Once again he found them asleep on his return.
They could not keep their eyes open,
nor did they know what to say to him.
He returned a third time and said to them,
P: “Still sleeping? Still taking your ease?
It will have to do. The hour is on us.
You will see that the Son of Man is to be handed over
to the clutches of evil men.
Rouse yourselves and come along.
See! My betrayer is near.”
N1: Even while he was still speaking,
Judas, one of the Twelve, made his appearance
accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs;
these people had been sent by the chief priests,
the scribes and the elders.
The betrayer had arranged a signal for them, saying,
L(M): “The man I shall embrace is the one;
arrest him and lead him away, taking every precaution.”
N1: He then went directly over to him and said, embracing him,
L(M): “Rabbi!”
N2: At this, they laid hands on him and arrested him.
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 10 | 24
One of the bystanders drew his sword
and struck the high priest’s slave, cutting off his ear.
Addressing himself to them, Jesus said,
P: “You have come out here to arrest me
armed with swords and clubs as if against a brigand.
I was within your reach daily, teaching in the temple precincts, yet you
never arrested me.
But now, so that the Scriptures may be fulfilled…”
N1: With that, all deserted him and fled.
There was a young man following him
who was covered by nothing but a linen cloth.
As they seized him he left the cloth behind and ran off naked.
N2: Then they led Jesus off to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders,
and the scribes came together.
Peter followed him at a distance right into the high priest’s courtyard, where
he found a seat with the temple guard
and began to warm himself at the fire.
The chief priests with the whole Sanhedrin
were busy soliciting testimony against Jesus
that would lead to his death, but they could not find any.
Many spoke against him falsely under oath
but their testimony did not agree.
Some, for instance, on taking the stand, testified falsely by alleging,
L(F)/ L(M): “We heard him declare,
‘I will destroy this temple made by human hands,’ /
and ‘In three days I will construct another not made by human hands.’”
N1: Even so, their testimony did not agree.
The high priest rose to his feet before the court
and began to interrogate Jesus:
L(M): “Have you no answer to what these men testify against you?”
N2: But Jesus remained silent; he made no reply.
Once again the high priest interrogated him:
L(M): “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
N2: Then Jesus answered:
P: “I am; and you will see the Son of Man
seated at the right hand of the Power
and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 11 | 24
N1: At that, the high priest tore his robes and said:
L(M): “What further need do we have of witnesses?
You have heard the blasphemy. What is your verdict?”
N1: They all concurred in the verdict “guilty,”
with its sentence of death.
Some of them then began to spit on him.
They blindfolded him and hit him
while the officers manhandled him, saying,
L(M): “Play the prophet!”
N2: While Peter was down in the courtyard,
one of the servant girls of the high priest came along.
When she noticed Peter was warming himself,
she looked more closely at him and said,
L(F): “You too were with Jesus of Nazareth.”
N2: But he denied it:
L(M): “I do not know what you are talking about!
What are you getting at?”
N1: Then he went out into the gateway.
At that moment a cock crowed.
The servant girl, keeping an eye on him,
started to tell the bystanders,
L(F): “This man is one of them.”
N1: Once again he denied it.
A little later the bystanders said to Peter once more,
L(M): “You are certainly one of them! You are a Galilean, are you not?”
N1: He began to curse, and to swear,
L(M): “I do not even know the man you are talking about!”
N2: Just then a second cockcrow was heard
and Peter recalled the prediction Jesus had made to him,
“Before the cock crows twice you will deny me three times.”
He broke down and began to cry.
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 12 | 24
N1: As soon as it was daybreak the chief priests,
with the elders and scribes (that is, the whole Sanhedrin),
reached a decision.
They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
Pilate interrogated him:
L(M): “Are you the king of the Jews?”
N1: Jesus replied:
P: “You are the one who is saying it.”
N2: The chief priests, meanwhile,
brought many accusations against him.
Pilate interrogated him again:
L(M): “Surely you have some answer?
See how many accusations they are leveling against you.”
N2: But greatly to Pilate’s surprise,
Jesus made no further response.
Now on the occasion of a festival
he would release for them a prisoner—any man they asked for.
There was a prisoner named Barabbas
jailed along with the rebels who had committed murder in the uprising.
When the crowd came up to press their demand
that he honor the custom, Pilate rejoined,
L(M): “Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?”
N1: He was aware, of course,
that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over.
Meanwhile, the chief priests incited the crowd
to have him release Barabbas instead.
Pilate again asked them,
L(M): “What am I to do with the man you call the king of the Jews?”
N2: They shouted back,
C(F)/(M)/POF: “Crucify him!”
N2: Pilate protested,
L(M): “Why? What crime has he committed?”
N1: They only shouted the louder,
C(F)/(M)/POF: “Crucify him!”
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 13 | 24
N2: So Pilate, who wished to satisfy the crowd,
released Barabbas to them, and after he had Jesus scourged,
he handed him over to be crucified.
The soldiers led Jesus away into the hall known as the praetorium;
at the same time they assembled the whole cohort.
They dressed him in royal purple cloak,
then wove a crown of thorns and put it on him,
and began to salute him,
L(M): “All hail! King of the Jews!”
N2: Continually striking Jesus on the head with a reed
and spitting at him, they genuflected before him
and pretended to pay him homage.
When they had finished mocking him,
they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes,
and led him out to crucify him.
A man named Simon of Cyrene,
the father of Alexander and Rufus, was coming in from the fields, and they
pressed him into service to carry the cross.
N1: When they brought Jesus to the site of Golgotha
(which means “Skull Place”),
they tried to give him wine drugged with myrrh,
but he would not take it.
Then they crucified him and divided up his garments
by rolling dice for them to see what each should take.
It was about nine in the morning when they crucified him.
The inscription proclaiming his offense read,
“The King of the Jews.”
With him they crucified two insurgents,
one at his right and the other at his left.
People going by kept insulting him, tossing their heads and saying,
L(M)/L(F): “So you were going to destroy the temple
and rebuild it in three days! /
Save yourself now by coming down from that cross!”
N1: The chief priests and scribes also joined in and jeered:
L(F)/L(M): “He saved others but he cannot save himself! /
Let the ‘Messiah,’ the ‘king of Israel,’
come down from that cross here and now
so that we can see it and believe in him!”
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 14 | 24
N2: The men who had been crucified with him
likewise kept taunting him.
When noon came, darkness fell on the whole countryside
and lasted until mid-afternoon.
At that time Jesus cried out in a loud voice,
P: “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachtani?”
N2: Which means,
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
A few bystanders who heard it remarked,
L(F): “Listen! He is calling on Elijah!”
N1: Someone ran off, and soaking a sponge in sour wine,
stuck it on a reed to try to make him drink.
The man said,
L(M): “Now let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down.”
N1: Then Jesus, uttering a loud cry, breathed his last.
Commentator: Please kneel (pause for 15 seconds)
Please stand
N1: At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary
was torn in two from top to bottom.
The centurion who stood guard over him,
on seeing the manner of his death, declared,
L(M): “Clearly this man was the Son of God!”
N2: There were also women looking on from a distance.
Among them were Mary Magdalene,
Mary the mother of James the younger and Joses,
and Salome.
These women had followed Jesus
when he was in Galilee and attended to his needs.
There were also many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
As it grew dark (it was Preparation day, that is, the eve of the Sabbath),
Joseph from Arimathea arrived—
a distinguished member of the Sanhedrin.
He was another disciple who looked forward to the reign of God. He was bold
enough to seek an audience with Pilate,
and urgently requested the body of Jesus.
Pilate was surprised that Jesus should have died so soon.
He summoned the centurion and inquired
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 15 | 24
whether Jesus was already dead.
N1: Learning from him that he was dead,
Pilate released the corpse to Joseph.
Then having brought a linen shroud,
Joseph took him down, wrapped him in the linen,
and laid him in a tomb which had been cut out of rock.
Finally he rolled a stone across the entrance of the tomb.
Meanwhile, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses
observed where he had been laid.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 17 | 24
Preparation of the Altar and the Gifts
If there are gifts to be presented, they are to be accompanied by the candle bearers.
When all this has been done, the Offertory chant begins. Meanwhile, the ministers place the corporal, the
purificator, the chalice, the pall, and the Missal on the altar. The Priest, standing
at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and holds it slightly raised above the altar with both hands, saying in
low voice:
Priest: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your
goodness we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth
and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life.
People: Blessed be God for ever.
The Deacon or the Priest, pours wine and a little water into the chalice, saying quietly:
By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the
divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.
The Priest, standing at the altar, takes the chalice and holds it slightly raised above the altar
with both hands, saying in low voice:
Priest: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your
goodness we have receive the wine we offer, fruit of the vine and
work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink.
People: Blessed be God for ever.
Then he places the chalice on the corporal.
After this, the Priest, bowing profoundly, says quietly:
Priest: With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O
Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to
you, Lord God.
Then the Priest, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands, saying quietly:
Priest: Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me
from my sin.
Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining his hands, he
says:
Priest: Pray, brethren, that our sacrifice may be acceptable to God, the
Almighty Father.
People: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory
of his name, for our good and the good of all His Holy Church.
PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 18 | 24
Priest: Give us the right dispositions, O Lord, we pray, to make these
offerings, for with them we celebrate the beginning of this venerable
and sacred time. Through Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.
PREFACE: The Passion of the Lord
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Priest: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right and just
Priest: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and
everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our
Lord.
For, though innocent, he suffered willingly for sinners and accepted
unjust condemnation to save the guilty. His Death has washed away
our sins, and his Resurrection has purchased our justification.
And so, with all the Angels, we praise you, as in joyful celebration
we acclaim:
At the end of the preface he joins his hands and concludes the preface with the people,
singing or saying aloud:
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II
The Priest, with hands extended, says:
Priest: You are indeed Holy, O Lord the fount of all holiness.
He joins his hands and, holding them extended over the offerings, says:
Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down
your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 19 | 24
He joins his hands and makes the sign of the cross once over the bread and the chalice
together, saying:
so that they may become for us the body + and blood of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his
Passion, he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to
His disciples, saying:
He bows slightly.
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT,
FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN
UP FOR YOU.
He shows the consecrated host to the people, places it again on the paten, and genuflects in
adoration.
After this, he continues;
In a similar way, when supper was ended,
He takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:
he took the chalice and, once more giving thanks, he gave it to his
disciples, saying:
He bows slightly.
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT,
FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE
BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR
MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.
He shows the chalice to the people, places it on the corporal, and genuflects in adoration.
Then, he says:
Priest: The mystery of faith.
And the people continue, acclaiming;
People: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the
Savior of the world!
Then the Priest, with hands extended, says:
Priest: Therefore, as we celebrate
the memorial of his Death and Resurrection,
we offer you, Lord,
the Bread of Life and the Chalice of salvation,
giving thanks that you have held us worthy
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (Holy Week 2024, Year B p a g e 20 | 24
to be in your presence and minister to you.
Humbly we pray
that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,
we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Remember, Lord your Church,
spread throughout the world,
and bring her to the fullness of charity,
together with N. our Pope and N. our Bishop,
and all the clergy.
Remember also our brothers and sisters
who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who
have died in your mercy:
welcome them into the light of your face.
Have mercy on us all, we pray,
that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
with the blessed Apostles, and all the Saints who have pleased you
throughout the ages.
we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life, and may praise and
glorify you
through your Son, Jesus Christ.
He takes the chalice and paten with the host and raising both, he says.
Through Him, and with Him, and in Him, O God almighty Father,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is Yours,
almighty Father, forever and ever.
The Great Amen is sung. Otherwise, the people acclaim:
People: Amen.
COMMUNION RITE
After the chalice and paten have been set down, the Priest, with hands joined, says:
Priest: At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to
say:
He extends his hands and, together with the people, continues:
People: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespasses against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Priest: Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil,
graciously grant peace in our days,
that, by the help of your mercy,
we may be always free from sin
and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope
and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
He joins his hands.
The people conclude the prayer, acclaiming:
People: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours
now and forever.
Then the Priest, with hands extended, says aloud:
Priest: Lord Jesus Christ,

look not on our sins,
but on the faith of your Church,
and graciously grant her peace and unity
in accordance with your will.
He joins his hands.

People: Amen.
The Priest, turned towards the people, extending and then joining his hands, adds:
Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
People: And with your spirit.
Then, if appropriate, the Deacon, or the Priest, adds:
Priest: Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
Then he takes the host, breaks it over the paten, and places a small piece in the chalice, saying
quietly:
Priest: May the mingling of the Body and Blood
of our Lord Jesus Christ
bring eternal life to us who receive it.
Meanwhile the following is sung or said:

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,
grant us peace.
Then the Priest, with hands joined, says quietly:
Priest: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God,
who, by the will of the Father
and the work of the Holy Spirit,
through your Death gave life to the world,
free me by this, your most holy Body and Blood,
from all sins and from every evil;
keep me always faithful to your commandments,
and never let me be parted from you.
Or:
May the receiving of your Body and Blood,
Lord Jesus Christ,
not bring me to judgment and condemnation,
but through your loving mercy
be for me protection in mind and body
and a healing remedy.
The Priest genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly raised above the paten or above the
chalice, while facing the people, says aloud:
Priest: Behold the Lamb of God,
behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
People: Lord, I am not worthy
that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word
and my soul shall be healed.
If there is no hymn for communion, the communion antiphon may be said.
COMMUNION ANTIPHON Mt 26: 42
Priest:Father, if this chalice cannot pass without my drinking it, your will
be done.
