What Do The Essay Plans Cover?

There are 4 essay plans each for conservatism, socialism and liberalism covering asking to what
extent those within the ideology agree on one of four key areas: human nature, the state, society and
the economy.

The essay plans are very detailed, including key content on both the different strands and 5 key
thinkers for each ideology. Rather than just providing plans for specific essay questions, they are
therefore also highly useful in learning the core ideologies content and answering any question that
may come up in the exam.

The 12 essay questions are certainly not the only essays you could be asked to answer in an exam,
though the plans do cover the vast majority of the core ideologies content and should be helpful in
answering the following types of questions they don’t cover:

More general questions covering the whole ideology, such as:

To What Extent Do Modern Liberals Accept The Views Of Classical Liberals?

To What Extent Does The New Right Agree With Earlier Strands Of Conservatism?

To What Extent Are Revolutionary Socialists Different From Social Democrats and Third Way
Thinkers?

Questions on topics specific to each ideology, such as:

Liberty, individualism, equality for liberalism

Pragmatism, tradition and paternalism for conservatism

Class, equality and collectivism for socialism

The essay plans and questions they are answering are specific to the Edexcel exam board, but the
content within them is also very useful for the AQA exam board and other exam boards, though the
structure of questions is different.

How Are The Essay Plans Structured?

Though there is some variation, the majority of the essays are structured with one paragraph for the
ways in which the ideology agrees and one paragraph for the ways in which the ideology disagrees,
with two key points in each.

This is certainly not the only way you can structure ideologies essays. Feel free to change them
around if you feel more comfortable with a different structure.

Each essay plan seeks to provide a good balance of comparison of ideological strands and of
thinkers, both of which are very important.

How To Use The Essay Plans In Your Revision

Use the essay plans to help learn the content and get a good idea of how you could answer some of
the key questions you could be asked in the exam.

These essay plans will not be enough on their own, however. Make sure to use them in combination
with your notes from class and any other revision resources you have made.
