Kawayang Pangarap 2

This reaction paper summarizes an episode of the documentary "Kawayang Pangarap" by Kara David about a man named Mang Joseph who cuts and sells bamboo poles from the mountain, risking his health to do so. It argues that the government should do more to support the livelihoods of people in rural areas through social programs and protecting indigenous lands from being claimed. It highlights injustices Mang Joseph faces, such as low prices for bamboo that don't account for the labor to harvest it and ancestral lands being approved for title to others. The documentary is praised for bringing awareness to these issues and the need for the government to help vulnerable indigenous groups through assistance programs and land protection.

SEPTEMBER, 2023
An episode of I-witness documentary by Kara David entitled “Kawayang

Pangarap”. It is the story of Mang Joseph who cut and sell bamboo pole. That bamboo

is from the mountain and needs to haul it down the slope. The health of Mang Joseph is

at risk. When his children do not have classes his children and his wife help him to haul

the bamboo. Their extreme poverty is an evidence that government should extend their

amelioration program to those people who are in rural area to support their livelihood

and needs.

In the Philippines, people who belong to the poor social status are much more

vulnerable to the country’s inflation. Many citizens are unemployed and suffering from

poverty. Mang Joseph belong to the filipino who are in low income salary. Mang Joseph

do not have education in his entire life and he was really illiterate until his daughter is

able to teach him to write. It is very sad to think that our government cannot extend their

help and compassion to those citizens who are in that social status. I believed that the

documentary of Kara David can awake and enlighten the people who have the

capability to help those citizens and indigenous people I rural areas.

The government should provide and establish a livelihood program and amelioration to

those people who can barely get a job because they are not well educated and they are

prone to the businessman who are taking advantage to lower the price of the product

because those people cannot disagree to them because indigenous people lack

knowledge on how to reason their price.

In that case of Mang Joseph there is injustice that is happening. The first one is the

price rate of bamboo culms is too cheap but the hauling requires a lot of man power to

gather those bamboos so it’s not reasonable to deal it with that cheapest prize. The
second one is the land area where the indigenous people get those bamboo poles are

having approved land title of someone assumed the land area. I believed that DENR

should not allow this application of title to the indigenous land ancestry. It is with a deep

sadness to think that those people who are struggling to survive their life and risk their

health to earn low income are being affected by injustice and greediness of other

people.

Therefore the government should realize how they should give an action for those

indigenous people who needs help in their basic needs and protection for their ancestral

land. This documentary of Kara David is significant enough for them to reflect the

situation of these indigenous and what action they can do for them.
