RATIONALE:
As a dental health professional, clients will look to you to be the expert in oral health education.
The use of oral self-care aids is an important part of oral health education and instruction. In order
to advise clients appropriately, you must be aware of products that are available on the market,
approximate costs and evidence-based research available for that product. When recommending
products and incorporating into a self-care plan, a dental hygienist must look at the research and
evidence to make informed decisions.

METHOD: READ FULLY BEFORE SIGNING UP

In a grouping of no more than 4, your assignment is to research and report to the class (in video
form) on one of the products listed below.
You will sign up int groups in class and select a topic for your group

RESEARCH presentation to include:


• some of the major brand names of the aid;
• price points for the products at various stores (Pharmacy, department store, etc), include one
online option i.e. Amazon or Well.ca, or any reputable online store;
• how some of the products compare to each other (price, use, availability etc);
• what are the active ingredients (only if applicable);
• who is the target audience for the aid;
• how do you use the product, Do a demo on screen using Dexter or a person if applicable.
• how is it marketed (internet, commercials, ads), include an ad/commercial
• What does the research say? Find 2 evidence-based articles or research about this aid. This
is very critical to the assignment (places to find this: CDHA, ODHA, Cochrane Canada, the
company who makes the product) Do not just google it and use the first link.
• As a group where, possible you should try your product for one week or more and be able to
give your educated opinion on it. This may not be possible for all aids.
• Include your recommendations to your colleagues (classmates) as well as to clients from
your research.
v Your presentation should be a maximum of 7-10 minutes to make an oral presentation (in
video) of your findings. A written report is not required to be handed in, the PowerPoint,
Google slides or Prezi is to act as your written portion.
v You will use PowerPoint, screencast-o-matic, and or YouTube to present your findings.

Where do I start? Read the following before beginning:


1. Choose group mates;
2. Go to Blackboard and enroll in a group, once you do this you cannot leave the group or choose
another group without instructor intervention/approval;
3. Go to the screencast-o-matic page and review how to use it; or go to

4. Begin research on the self-care aid chosen;
5. Break up the work amongst the group members;
6. Create a PowerPoint, Google slides or Prezi presentation;
7. Leave enough time in your schedule to record the presentation;
8. Record the presentation and upload to YouTube (you will need a YouTube account);
9. Submit the link to the assignment #1 folder in BB by the due date WITH ALL GROUP
MEMBERS NAMES, be sure the video is not marked as Private or I won’t be able to view
it; Only one person has to submit;
10. Once the links are posted to BB by the instructor, view 3 other presentations that are NOT
the same product as yours. (this will not be immediate, check back often)

Once the presentations are complete you will be expected to view and provide feedback for 2
presentations besides your own. There will be a JOURNAL PAGE posted for you to submit your
feedback to, this is private and only the instructor can see it. This section is worth 2% of the 10%.
The feedback should be constructive and summarize your learning. Use the following to guide your
responses:
