Limits Involving Infinity

The document discusses limits of functions as x approaches infinity or specific values. Some key points covered include: 1) Rules for evaluating limits involving infinity, such as limits of polynomials and rational functions as x approaches ±infinity. 2) Limits can equal positive or negative infinity if the function values increase or decrease without bound as x approaches a value. 3) Some specific limits, such as limits of radicals and fractional functions, are indeterminate forms that require further algebraic manipulation to evaluate.

LIMITS OF FUNCTIONS CONTINUED

IMAGA O. F.
Limits at infinity
Let f(x) be a function defined on some interval (a, ) . Then
lim f ( x )  L
x 
if the values of f(x) can be made arbitrarily close to L by
taking x sufficiently large
Let f(x) be a function defined on some interval ( , a) . Then
lim f ( x )  L
x 
if the values of f(x) can be made arbitrarily close to L by
taking x sufficiently large and negative

Limits of Polynomials as x  

highest degree term i.e

5
Limits of Rational Functions as x  
For a rational function, to the limit is to divide each term in the
numerator and denominator by the highest power of x that
occurs in the denominator, after which the limiting behavior
can be found.

Infinite Limits
Let f be a function defined on some open interval that
contains a, except possible at a itself. Then if the values of
f(x) increases without bound as the values of x (where x  a )
approach the number a, then the limit as x approaches a is
positive infinity

lim f ( x )  
x a

8
Similarly, if the values of f(x) decrease without bound as the
values of x (where x  a ) approach the number a, then the
limit as x approaches a is negative infinity

lim f ( x )  
x a
