COLLABORATION BETWEEN MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL AND CONTROL ENGINEERS

REDUCE TIME TO DESIGN, DEVELOP, AND DELIVER

You've always known Rockwell Automation to be known as a trusted source of control products and solutions. Typically, your
mechanical engineering department had little involvement in these control system discussions, and machines were designed with
handoffs between the different engineering
groups. Design, build, and test seemed to

To enable this interdisciplinary design approach, • Analyze machine dynamics
• Optimize geometry or material
Rockwell Automation developed a software
called Motion Analyzer. This software helps
make it faster and easier to analyze, optimize,
simulate, and select motion control systems.
To incorporate the mechanical systems into the
process, Rockwell Automation partnered with
SolidWorks, a premiere mechanical design
package used by many machine designers.
Finally, Rockwell Automation enhanced its
product portfolio to include direct drive
technologies that deliver the highest possible
motion control performance.

Hardware
A comprehensive group of motion products, including direct drive
motors, linear stages, stacked stages and electric cylinders helps you
deliver excellent machines.

These products either allow you to couple directly to the load,

eliminating transmission components which add backlash and
compliance to the system, or have a larger rotor inertia, which
improves the inertia ratio of the system. System benefits
include reduced mechanical vibration, improved dynamic
performance and lower power consumption.

IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY WITH LESS DOWNTIME AND FASTER MACHINE RESTART

Safety on the manufacturing floor is an important concern. Safeguarding personnel not only prevents injuries, it can also lower
insurance, maintenance and other related costs. But machine productivity is crucial, too. You’re facing constant pressure to produce
more and produce it faster. In the past, bringing safety and
productivity together was a challenge. Safety precautions
were often cumbersome, expensive and resulted in a great
deal of downtime. But with Kinetix servo drives with
embedded safety, you can take advantage of high
performance servo drives that not only increase safety
for personnel but also enable machine productivity
enhancements. The benefits are:
• Faster production recovery by allowing safe motion
during machine setup and maintenance
• Embedded safety monitoring technology reduces
wiring, troubleshooting and cost
• Complete system offering and support from one
supplier with Rockwell Automation's broad
safety offering

Kinetix Safety Options

Safe Speed Monitoring(S1) — When necessary, monitor
the speed of your application. If in excess of the safe speed
you have defined, initiate Safe Stop. This functionality
helps provide improved access to guarded areas while a
machine or process is allowed to continue operation
under limited conditions.

Safe Torque Off (-S) — Drive output is safely disabled

without removing power from the entire machine.
The result is faster machine restart and less
machine downtime.

automation on its existing machine .
Quigg International met customer goals to:
• improve its employee safety
• meet compliance demands
• integrate three disparate control disciplines
(safety, motion and automation/discrete) into a

The machine upgrade also went one step further, by

helping the customer increase overall productivity to
the tune of about $2 million in one year.

“Safety and production can go hand in hand,” Quigg

says. “We’re proving it here. I’m proud of our ability to
engineer a solution that helps meet and exceed our
customers’ expectations. With the help of Rockwell

Drives and Motion Accelerator Toolkit
This collection of design tools can help you significantly reduce the time and cost of developing a new application using
Rockwell Automation equipment, especially PowerFlex® AC Drives and Kinetix® Servo Drives
Toolkit provides sets of modules that are combined to produce:
• An initial Bill of Material
• A beginning set of CAD drawings for wiring diagrams and panel layouts
• An initial logic program written around the specific products used by
the application
• Initial HMI screens designed around the specific products used by
the application

The optional Design Wizard can automate the file selections and importation done
when using the Drives and Motion Accelerator Toolkit. To speed development, the
Design Wizard asks questions about your application and then produces the tools
to start your application within minutes.
You tell the Wizard which controller, drives, HMI and I/O your application will use,
and the Wizard then runs and generates a:
• Bill of Materials of the products you specified
• Folder of Writing Diagrams and Panel Layout footprints ready your CAD program
• Logix program with the configuration and basic control needs for your products
• Starting HMI application with adaptation instructions for your application

Studio 5500 Automation Engineering and Design Environment

To build a new level of automation productivity, Rockwell Automation has introduced Studio 5000 Automation Engineering and Design
Environment. Based on the RSLogix 5000 design software, the Studio 5000 environment is intended to be a framework for engineering
collaboration and sets the foundation for design tools that allow engineers to enter configuration information only once and leverage it
across the entire automation design. The first element in Studio 5000 was the Logix Designer application, which was the progression of
RSLogix 5000 software for programming and configuring Programmable Automated Controllers.
Motion Instructions are integrated into Studio 5000 Logix Designer
for Fast, Convenient Programming
• One software package provides complete support for drive
configuration, programming, commissioning, diagnostics and maintenance.
• Extensive library of 41 motion instructions provides a broad range of basic and
advanced motion functionality including time and position camming (TCAM,
PCAM), linear and circular interpolation, kinematics and high speed event
handling support
Integrated Motion Configuration and Commissioning Makes Drive Control Easy
• Drive, motor and actuator selection and configuration is simplified by use of catalog numbers. This out-of-the-box “connect and run”
support eliminates the need for complex drive/motor/actuator configuration and tuning.
• Create tags once and use enterprise-wide
Powerful Diagnostics to Identify and Resolve Problems
• Time stamped faults and alarms log provides precise drive speed and position regulation
• With remote diagnostics, detailed drive and motor status information is available anywhere in the Logix system, allowing you to
remotely manage applications where needed.
