NUMBER COUNTING

▪ 0-10
NUMBER FIGURE JAPANESE READING
0 zero
1 ichi
2 nii
3 san
4 yon, si (shi)
5 go
6 roku
7 nana, sichi (shichi)
8 hachi
9 kyuu, ku
10 juu, to

• This is the basic counting of numbers from zero to 10.

• On some occasions, shichi and ku is used when telling time (hour/o’clock).

▪ 11-20
NUMBER FIGURE JAPANESE READING
11 ju-ichi/juichi
12 ju-nii/junii
13 juu-san/jusan
14 juu-yon/juyon
15 ju-go/jugo
16 juu-roku/juroku
17 juu-nana/junana
18 juu-hachi/juhachi
19 juu-kyuu/jukyuu
20 nii-juu/niju

For numbers 11 to 19 the formula is: 10 (juu) + the number that is missing. So, if you pair 10
(juu) + 1 (ichi) you will get juichi or 11.
Another example: 10 (juu) + 7 (nana) you’ll get juunana or 17.
Meanwhile, any numbers ending with zero will be formulated like this: for example, 4 (yon) × 10
(juu) you will get yonju or 40. So for 20, it is: 2 (nii) × 10 (juu) is equals to niiju or 20.

• Let’s take a look at numbers not ending with zero (0). To say a specific number from 21
to 99 excluding the numbers ending with 0, this the structure that we use:
First number + juu + second number

• For instance, for 25, we would say “2-10-5” or nii-juu-go.

100 hyaku

Number beyond 100 such as the numbers between 101 to 199, you will need to add the prefix
“hyaku”.
For example, 112 is hyaku juu-ni.
For two-hundred you just simply add “nii” before “hyaku”. So two-hundred (200) is niihyaku while
201 (two-hundred one) is nihyaku-ichi.
