Force Balance Accelerometer
The EpiSensor ES-T: A Flexible, Versatile Value

Kinemetrics announces its latest line of earthquake sensors –

EpiSensor force balance accelerometers. Model FBA ES-T is a triaxial
surface package useful for many types of earthquake recording
applications. The unit consists of three EpiSensor force balance
accelerometer modules mounted orthogonally in one small
convenient package. With fullscale recording ranges of ± 0.25 to ±
4g (user selectable) the EpiSensor provides on-scale recording of
earthquake motions even at nearfault locations and in a wide variety
of structure types.

The significantly improved bandwidth of DC to 200 Hz allows

engineers and scientists to study motions at higher frequencies
while maintaining the very important DC response that allows
simple field calibration and reduces post-processing confusion. FEATURES
Output circuitry is also significantly enhanced. Several types of
outputs can be field-selected by the user: ± 2.5V single-ended
output for use with traditional Kinemetrics earthquake recording • Low noise
instruments: ± 10V single-ended or ± 20V differential output for use
with Kinemetrics digital recorders and other 24-bit digital recorders • Extended bandwidth - DC to 200Hz
currently on the market.
• User-selectable full-scale range
EpiSensor force balance accelerometers are also available in uniaxial
(the FBA ES-U) and borehole (the FBA ES-SB shallow and FBA ES-DH • Calibration coil (standard)
deep) packages.
• Single-end or differential output (user selectable)

• Double-stage transient protection

Executive Summary

1. Our platform, designed on an open-architecture paradigm, is 100% compatible with

most of the global, regional and national earthquake monitoring systems. Our platform
is the only commercial solution in the marketplace interfacing directly with major
seismic data acquisition and processing software such as Antelope and SeisComp
without proprietary manufacturer software!

2. Our Aspen platform meets and exceeds the specifications of this Tender and offers
superior products by all means to the competitor’s equipment. Our state-of-the-art
equipment and software, with field proven capabilities and unparalleled references, will
guarantee the highest data availability and quality not only for seismic monitoring, but
also for scientific research purposes.

3. Our highly reliable seismic equipment has an MTBF in excess of 500,000 hours. Our
systems have achieved data availability of 98+% in IRIS USArray/TA over more than 1
million station-days. USArray has deployed over 2000 stations in different weather
conditions, very challenging logistics and used a wide range of telecommunication media
such as radios, WI-FI, Internet, VSAT, GPRS/UMTS/2G/3G/4G, etc.

4. Our Aspen platform products are still running after 23 years. We protect our products
from technology obsolescence and electronic parts shortage by designing our critical
processor boards in-house. For example, our Q330 model digitizer was released to the
market in 2001, and it is still operational and supported after 21 years!

5. With more than 200 PhD thesis within IRIS consortium community that used data from
the USArray deployment, we guarantee the highest proven quality data with our Aspen
Platform products. Our Aspen platform products’ architecture comes from the legendary
Quanterra Q330 family of data acquisition systems and Streckeisen broadband
seismometers.

6. We offer a comprehensive training and support package based on our long years of
experience in designing, operating, and maintaining seismic monitoring systems all over the
world. This package consists of on-site training, live webinars from our testing facility in
California, and special 24/7 remote assistance from our service offices in Europe and in the
USA.

7. We offer you the least expensive Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), which includes not only
the initial cost of purchase, but also the accumulated cost of operation, maintenance, loss of
data, and obsolescence.

Introduction
Kinemetrics’ design objective is to develop the finest systems based on industry open-
architecture standards, with value-added engineering to meet the requirements of
real-time computing applications in seismic-related projects.

The Aspen platform is a distributed open-architecture system designed to provide a

comprehensive set of environmental monitoring data and processed information.
Aspen uses the latest developments in sensor, digitizer, communication, and
computer networking technologies as well as recent findings in earth sciences
research.

Unparalleled References
In the area of seismic monitoring, everyone agrees that fieldwork is difficult and
expensive. The various centers, institutes, and companies that fund the
implementation of seismic monitoring systems expect 365/7/24 flawless operation
and availability (uptime), high-quality data collection, and data return greater than
98%. Civil defense and emergency management entities, must respond efficiently and
in a timely manner to any earthquake event, and do not want their work to be
compromised by substandard equipment.

Kinemetrics systems excel in many major global, regional, and local permanent
networks (IRIS/USGS Global Seismic Network, USGS-USA, New Zealand, South Korea,
Chile, DPC-Italy, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, and many others) where
reliability, data quality, and high-data availability are a must. We are pleased to
present here three specific reference projects where our unparalleled Aspen
platform has been implemented, and return of experience from some of networks
and porjects:

- The Earthscope USArray Transportable Array;

- The Italian Civil Protection Department’s (DPC) Strong-Motion Monitoring
System:
- The California Earthquake Early Warning System (CEEWS);
- Products performance from several national networks and projects.

Kinemetrics instruments are the de-facto standard for any seismic network and system
solution where innovation, reliability and cost effectiveness are important. Ours are the
instruments of choice where a new goal has to be achieved, where new technological
boundaries are to be tested and where, under extreme environmental conditions, a
normal and secure continuous operation is critical.

USArray Transportable Array

The Earthscope USArray Transportable Array (TA) is a portable and real-time network
that is exclusively based on the Quanterra digitizers (450 units of the Q330). The
USArray Array Network Facility (ANF) is located at UCSD (http://anf.ucsd.edu/) and
runs the Antelope software. The ANF is charged with the responsibility to ensure that
all the real-time data collected of the TA are transmitted, checked for quality,
archived, and made accessible online for researchers and the general public.

- 450 stations operated continuously for a period of 10 years between 2006-

2016, or a total of 1,274,090 station-days
- Only 14,432 out of 1,274,090 station-days contained one or more gaps.

Overall, 98.9% of TA station-days had 100% data availability

over 10 years in 24/7 operation.
That’s not just 98.9% availability, it’s that there was ZERO data missing in 98.9% of
stations. The 1.1% of stations that had gaps were mostly short duration during the life
of the project.
The total mean uptime of the entire TA network was 99.7%.

Italian Civil Protection Department’s strong-motion

monitoring system

The national Italian Strong-Motion Network is a permanent monitoring system run by

the Italian National Emergency Management Department (Dipartimento della
Protezione Civile, DPC). The network is known as RAN (Rete Accelerometrica
Nazionale). It consists of 531 seismic stations connected in real-time to the DPC data
center in Rome.

The network includes legacy hardware from several manufacturers and new
generation hardware like ETNA 2, Obsidian and Q330; it uses Mobile
GSM/GPRS/3G/4G communication and dial-up. The data center in Rome uses the
Antelope Software System for acquisition and processing.

- We are contracted by DPC since 2012 to operate and maintain this large and
critical monitoring system.
- The contract covers 354 stations.
- Contractual obligations are 96% data return, twice preventive visits to each site
per year, repair of station within 5 days after notification (including weekends).
- Exceptional results by our team: 99% station availability.

This is an example of our portfolio projects that gives us a deep knowledge of the
requirements and reality of the seismic network operation.

California Earthquake Early Warning System

The California Earthquake Early Warning System (CEEWS) is an ambitious project
initiated by the State of California and implemented by Caltech, Berkley, USGS and
the California Governor Office of Emergency Services CalOES. The CEEWS was
declared —"open for business" last January 2019. Earthquake early warning systems
like the California EEWS consist of a network of sensors near faults that transmit
signals to data-processing centers when shaking occurs. These data-processing
centers use algorithms to rapidly determine the earthquake's location, magnitude,
and the fault rupture length—determining the intensity of an earthquake and
sending out an alert that can provide seconds or even minutes of warning. Paired
with automated responses that will save lives and prevent damages.

Quanterra digitizers’ design

The real digitizer evaluation:
how does the digitizer handle real signals across its entire specified range of
input amplitudes and frequencies?

- A digitizer for broad-band seismic signals is a balance of many requirements, and the
Dynamic Range is only a part of the story!
- Maximum Potential Dynamic Range (MPDR) or simply Dynamic Range is a theoretical
value that can be gamed by focusing on lowering the self-noise with NO actual signals
applied and with shorted input, which never a real-life situation!
- Earthquakes are large-amplitude dynamic signals with a huge frequency and amplitude
content, so the self-noise should not be the only digitizer performance indicator!
- Data Acquisition requires a highly linear system.
- Linearity can be described by tests on:
o Modified Noise Power Ratio,
o Total Harmonic Distortion,
o Common Mode Rejection,
o Crosstalk,
o and Time-base stability.
- Failing to understand broadband digitizer design by optimizing MPDR while ignoring
the other essential elements does not make a digitizer better for real applications.

Quanterra is committed to Total Signal Integrity since inventing the first digital
Very Broad-Band seismic instrumentation. A specifier, purchaser, and operator of
seismological networks should look for high linear systems and shouldn't fixate on
MPDR only!

Modified Noise Power Ratio (MNPR)

The MNPR measures the linearity of the digitizer channels across different
amplitudes.
Just reminder here, the Dynamic Range is not really a measurable quantity: it is
defined based on the separate measurements of full scale, and noise, followed by
calculation. The noise is usually measured with no signal applied. In other words, if
the noise level of the digitizer were to remain at the level measured with no signal,
when a signal of full scale was applied, the actual measurable ratio within a defined
bandwidth of the largest to smallest signal would be the calculated value.
The Dynamic Range, which actually the Maximum Potential Dynamic Range (MPDR),
is hypothetical, a potential best-case that can be presented in different ways by the
manufacturers!

The MNPR allow to evaluate how the digitizer self-noise changes when you apply an
input signals with different amplitudes.

The graph above shows how Centaur self-noise starts decreasing at an input signal of
10mV losing 10 dB at full scale, while The Quanterra shows a straight, constant MNPR as
signal level is increased right up to full scale

generated by the low distortion oscillator exceeded the measurement
made on the digitizer channel indicating that the distortion observed is
due to the digitizer. There was no distortion for the Quanterra digitizer at
gains x1 and x2.

Another linearity proof of Quanterra digitizers. Understanding the

requirements of the broadband seismology was and is a key to the
Quanterra success.

Common Mode Rejection

The Common Mode Rejection measures the ability of a digitizer to reject a
common mode signal on a differential input channel

Quanterra
Q330M+ / Q8 CRD Time Series

Centaur CRD Time Series

The observed common mode rejection was between 86 dB and 114.5 dB for
the Q330M+/Q8 and between 80 to 90 dB for the Centaur!

Quanterra does not use tricks, its digitizers are not optimized for specific
signal level ranges – There are just clean, consistent resolution across the
entire operating range. This is essential in a broadband system.

Time accuracy and drift

In a sampled system, the uniformity of sample-to-sample intervals is an
essential, defining requirement.
This is general described in terms of “phase noise”. An error in the interval
between samples relates directly and proportionally to an amplitude
measurement error.

Q330M+ Tag drift GPS, PTP

Centaur Tag drift GPS, PTP

Absolute accuracy of time tagging at the microsecond level for

seismic signals is insignificant. Seismic signals are dynamic and
require a constant uniform timing sample base.
sampling time base.
The Tag drift is a smooth curve, indicating careful attention to time
base phase stability for the Quanterra. It is noisy for Centaur (PTP)
with excursion up to 100us in amplitude! This is potentially a huge
distortion in samples at 100sps, (10ms sample interval), equivalent
to a 1% amplitude error!

Low thermal drift channels

The Q8 is the only digitizer in the market place that offers 3-channels with ultra-low
temperature sensitivity, see the test below:

• The red trace is a Q8 low-thermal drift channel, the green trace is a standard channel.
• The data are acquired in a typical building environment over a period of 9 hours, with
the HVAC system cycling every few hours, resulting in several deg. C variation.

Dynamic Range

The Q8 provides a dynamic range of:

o Standard Mode: 142dB measured as ratio of Full-Scale
RMS sine wave to RMS noise in the band of ,0.01-7Hz
band, OR 145dB measured as zero-to-peak sine wave.
o Enhanced Mode (Low temperature sensitivity on3
channel): 145dB ratio measured as Full-Scale RMS sine

Extended resolution when used as a 3-channel

High Resolution. Only available for Sensor A. If checked then rather than
having 6 individual A/D inputs the second group of 3 will be connected 180
degrees out of phase (relative to the first group) to the Sensor A connector.
In processing the difference of each A/D pair will be used, this provides
greater signal to noise ratio and more stable DC levels over temperature.
Sensor B (and digitizer channels 4-6) configuration are disabled.

In addition to the Gbit Ethernet interface for telemetry, management, and fast data offload,
the Q8 WI-FI can be used for comfortable unit management using industry-standard
browsers even on mobile phones.

The EpiSensor Model ES-T

Kinemetrics triaxial force balance accelerometer, the EpiSensor, is the worldwide

standard. It is used by major national earthquake observatories in the US (USGS,
Caltech, Berkley, etc.), in Europe (ETH Switzerland, ISterre France, DPC Italy,
Potsdam, Germany, etc.), and Asia (South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.). The
EpiSensor is also widely used for earthquake engineering applications as for
structure health monitoring (SHM) (Buildings code compliance, bridges, dams, etc.).
The EpiSensor comes in 3 versions: the surface model (ES-T), the Shallow borehole
model down to 100m (SBEPI), and the deep borehole model (ESDH).

The EpiSensor force balance accelerometer, Model FBA ES-T is a triaxial surface
package useful for many types of earthquake recording applications. The unit
consists of three EpiSensor force balance accelerometer modules mounted
orthogonally in one small convenient package. With full-scale recording ranges of ±
0.25 to ± 4g (user selectable) the EpiSensor provides on-scale recording of
earthquake motions even at near fault locations and in a wide variety of structure
types.
The significantly improved bandwidth of DC to 200 Hz allows engineers and scientists
to study motions at higher frequencies while maintaining the very important DC
response that allows simplified calibration and reduces post-processing confusion.
Output circuitry is also significantly enhanced. Several types of outputs can be field-
selected by the user: ± 2.5V single-ended output for use with traditional Kinemetrics
earthquake recording instruments: ± 10V single-ended or ± 20V differential output
for use with Kinemetrics digital recorders and other 24-bit digital recorders currently
on the market.

The EpiSensor is defacto the world standard accelerometer. It is widely used

both for earthquakes monitoring and its impact on structures. The EpiSensor
is the world highest installed accelerometer (+828m) @ the top of Burj
Khalifa (Dubai) and also the world deepest installed one (-669m) @ Swiss
nuclear.

EpiSensor Noise Model

At many sites, the EpiSensor noise level is below the earth noise level in a bandwidth
from 0.06 Hz to more than 50 Hz. It can also resolve the largest ground accelerations
recorded during an earthquake. This gives the EpiSensor an excellent broadband
range. In addition, the EpiSensor has a highly stable phase response. The EpiSensor
is a robust, cost-effective, quality-consistent, low powered unit, with simple
installation and maintenance.

The MBB-2 Broadband Seismometer

The Streckeisen seismometers are constructed for long-term operation under harsh
conditions, requiring minimal maintenance. That was Streckeisen philosophy since
company’s interception almost 40 years ago and Streckeisen’s invention and
introduction of the first broadband seismometer to the seismic research community.
As of today, there are more than 3,000 Streckeisen STS seismometers in service. To
achieve such a level of reliability, every instrument undergoes an extensive range of
tests and quality controls utilizing a large test infrastructure both on-and off-site.

For example, to calibrate a sensor, it is necessary to simulate an earthquake.

Therefore, Streckeisen uses a custom-built shake table that is able to shake all three
components in one run.

As part of the manufacturing process and the QA process, completely assembled

seismometers are monitored and checked for several weeks for any potential
misbehavior. Large shielded granite slabs allow simultaneous measurements on
many units. For electric and magnetic capability, Streckeisen uses an anechoic
chamber and a three dimensional Helmholtz coil.

Long term testing and Streckeisen seismometer production tests are carried out at
our remote, very quiet site. It's a former World War 2 fortress within a stable rock
and thus shielded from nature or human influences as far as possible in Switzerland.
Streckeisen also has collaborating access to some of the quietest sites in the world
for advanced performance tests.

MBB-2 was designed by Kinemerics Inc. and it is manufactured, tested and calibrated by
Streckeisen in Switzerland.

The Broadband Seismometer (MBB-2) is the latest sensor offering from Metrozet for
vault or posthole installations. The MBB-2 offers high-performance features in a small,
rugged, low power system that is easy to install and deploy. Built with ease of
installation in mind, the MBB-2 does not require a mass lock, mass centering, and has
a sizeable operational tilt range, which reduces installation time. The MBB-2 was
engineered from the ground up to deliver best-in-class performance.

MBB-2 is designed for borehole, posthole and surface vault installations

Low thermal drift channels

The Q8 is the only digitizer in the market place that offers 3-channels with ultra-low
temperature sensitivity, see the test below:

• The red trace is a Q8 low-thermal drift channel, the green trace is a standard channel.
• The data are acquired in a typical building environment over a period of 9 hours, with
the HVAC system cycling every few hours, resulting in several deg. C variation.

Dynamic Range

The Q8 provides a dynamic range of:

o Standard Mode: 142dB measured as ratio of Full-Scale
RMS sine wave to RMS noise in the band of ,0.01-7Hz
band, OR 145dB measured as zero-to-peak sine wave.
o Enhanced Mode (Low temperature sensitivity on3
channel): 145dB ratio measured as Full-Scale RMS sine

wave to RMS noise, 0.01- 7Hz band, OR 148dB

measured as zero-to-peak sine wave.
