Identify the causes and effects of this issue.
News regarding the COVID-19 virus started in November of 2019 along with the issue
of the America-Iraq conflict.
The virus first appeared on a small scale in November 2019, with the first large cluster
appearing in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. It was first thought SARS-CoV-2 made
the jump to humans at one of Wuhan, China’s open-air "wet markets." Later theories
voiced concern that it may have originated as a biological weapon in a lab in China. As
COVID-19 spread both inside and outside China, it infected people who had no direct
contact with animals. That meant the virus was transmitted from one human to another.
Its spread continued in the U.S. and around the globe, meaning that people are
unwittingly catching and passing on the coronavirus. The worldwide transmission is
what is now a pandemic declared on March 11, 2020, by the World Health
Organization. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets released when someone
with the virus coughs, sneezes, breathes, sings, or talks. These droplets can be inhaled
or land in the mouth, nose, or eyes of a person nearby. The virus can also spread if you
touch a surface with the virus on it and then touch your mouth, nose, or eyes. But the
risk is low.
The most commonly reported symptoms of post-COVID-19 syndrome include fatigue,
fever, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, cough, heart symptoms or conditions,
including chest pain and a fast or pounding heartbeat, digestive symptoms, including
diarrhea and stomach pain, and other symptoms, such as a rash and changes in the
menstrual cycle. Although most people with COVID-19 have mild to moderate
symptoms, the disease can cause severe medical complications and lead to death in
some people. Older adults or people with existing medical conditions are at greater risk
of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19.
According to the World Health Organization, almost seven million people died because
of the COVID-19 virus. The world had been locked down for almost two years. In just a
blink of an eye, people were shocked globally. A lot of things happened when the
pandemic started. At first, there was no real cure for this virus; the only thing we could
do was prevent it from spreading. But it seems like most of the countries were not ready
for this kind of global issue, which is why the virus spread all over the world. There was
no country that was not affected by this virus. Flights were canceled, every household
was put on a very intensive lockdown, and lastly, work was terminated as well as
businesses and schools. In short, outside life ceased. Only front-liners are allowed to go
outside. Hospitals are occupied.
Enumerate the possible solutions to this issue that will demonstrate the following
values: patriotism, nationalism, and volunteerism.
One of the ways to help prevent COVID-19 is to avoid physical contact with one
another. Reducing exposure means following the imposed guidelines on quarantine
and distancing yourself from others, especially when COVID-19 is spreading in your
community. Everyone was encouraged to wear a face mask.
Hygiene and sanitation are crucial. Hygiene starts with yourselves, so practice proper
handwashing. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the hands are the
main pathway for germ transmission. Remember to wash between our fingers and
under our nails. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with your hands, as the
virus spreads easily this way. Keep your home neat and orderly by practicing regular
cleaning and disinfecting, which both help prevent infection.
Keep communication consistent. With technology literally in the palm of our hands,
connecting with others is easier and more accessible. Talk to people, especially those
you trust, about your concerns and worries. It is crucial, especially at a time like this, to
keep in touch with your loved ones and see how they are doing.
Look for one another. Being quarantined does not mean that we should only look out
for our own safety. When there are relief goods from the government, we should only
get the amount we need and give the rest to others. Disciplined yourselves. Respect
our medical personnel and the front-liners.
Strictly follow the bylaws and regulations. Maintain social distance and avoid
contact. Get vaccinated as soon as it’s your turn, and follow local guidance on
vaccination. Cover your mouth and nose with a bent elbow or tissue when you cough or
sneeze. Dispose of used tissues immediately and clean hands regularly. If you develop
symptoms or test positive for COVID-19, self-isolate until you recover.
From the lists of the solutions above, we can identify the three main values of being a
Filipino, such as patriotism, nationalism, and volunteerism. Because of this pandemic,
we have been tested to see how patriotic we are in our country by following the rules
and regulations being implemented by the government in order to prevent COVID-19
from spreading. Also, our front-liners, who became our heroes and willingly took all the
risks just for us to recover from this virus. The people who voluntarily helped by giving
relief goods. And those who voluntarily isolated themselves in order to prevent
infections. Volunteerism is not easy. Most of the time, we will not take a risk if it does
not benefit us. But volunteerism thinks differently; with or without benefits, our main goal
is to share our skills and talents with other people because we want to help them
because we care for them (another term is loving). This is what nationalism looks like.
We love our country by helping our countrymen.
Lastly, how much are we willing to risk for the overall safety of our country, which
includes getting vaccinated? When the vaccine for COVID-19 was discovered, a lot of
people were against it. Rumors spread that these vaccines would only make the virus
worse. Yes, it is true that the vaccine might trigger your condition, but getting a vaccine
also requires certain tests and procedures. You will be evaluated before you undergo
such a vaccination. But if you love your country, countrymen, community, friends and
family, and even yourself, you will voluntarily get yourself vaccinated because this
vaccine will prevent your body from getting infected by the virus. This test shows how
much we are going to risk for our country. Do we believe what the government is telling
us to do? Do we trust them or not? Such questions we first encounter before we can
come up with a certain decision.
From your list of suggested solutions, choose one that you can do or perform
during this pandemic.
The best thing I can do during this pandemic is maintain proper hygiene and sanitation.
This includes everything, such as monitoring my health, wearing a face mask, and
cleanliness. I believe that self-discipline is essential, especially during pandemics.
Being hygienic will keep us from being prone to viruses if we keep our bodies clean and
away from any viruses such as COVID-19. It also includes clean and safe meals.
Note or record the processes or steps that you will be doing to execute your
chosen solution.
By practicing good respiratory hygiene, we can protect the people around us from
viruses that cause colds, flu, and COVID-19. The steps to consider are:
Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with either an alcohol-based hand rub or
soap and water. This eliminates germs that may be on your hands, including viruses.
Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or
sneeze. Dispose of the used tissue immediately in a closed bin and wash your hands.
Clean and disinfect surfaces frequently, especially those that are regularly touched,
such as door handles, faucets, and phone screens.
What is/are your personal realization(s) while doing the activity?
To be honest, at first, I had no idea how I would relate COVID-19 to our topic. I don’t
see any connection between the two since our topic mainly focuses on the life of Rizal.
But after I identified the following solutions for COVID-19, I came to the realization that
there is really a connection between the two. During the pandemic, we discovered a lot
of things. Since we were not allowed to go outside, we didn’t have any choice but to
stay in our houses. Because of that, some families were being reunited because of the
pandemic; some people discovered new skills and talents they didn’t expect they had;
some also discovered their true purpose in life; and others just loved being with their
loved ones. Despite being quarantined, we still look for one another. Since technology
makes our communication easy and accessible, we were able to monitor our friends
and families far away from us through the internet. We looked for an update on new
cases of the virus, and we waited for the command of the government. Aside from that,
we managed to strictly follow the health protocols being implemented by the
government. Since social distancing is mandatory, as is wearing our face mask.
Doctors, front-liners, medical personnel, the army, nurses, and other COVID-19 heroes
—if not for them, we might not be able to surpass this huge challenge we encounter.
Because of their love for their country, they willingly give themselves, having awareness
of the risks they’ll face in doing so. Sadly, a lot of medical personnel died because of
the virus, but their heroism and actions will stay in our hearts, and we will forever be
grateful for their bravery. I just realized how happy I am to have been born a Filipino.
Because being Filipino does not just end with being someone born in our country; it
means something deeper than what we can imagine. Just like the movie I have
watched entitled "Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon," it promotes the true identity
of being a Filipino, which means we take responsibility to defend our country whatever
the cost and consequences.
