Let Us Study

An informative essay is a unique piece of writing because it allows you

to explain a particular issue or topic to your audience. To succeed, you must
organize your ideas to flow well so that the readers can grasp whatever
information that you are trying to put across.
An informative essay educates your reader on a topic. They can have
one of several purposes: to define a term, compare and contrast something,
analyze data, or provide a how-to. It also aims to inform the target audience
about the particular object, person, event, or phenomenon. The main purpose

2
is to respond to the main question by explaining the topic in detail. They do
not, however, present an opinion or try to persuade your reader.

Activity 1: Mixed Up Essay

DIRECTIONS: The strips below are mixed-up ideas that are the skeleton of
an informative essay. Arrange them into Topics and Details. One of them is
the Big Idea. Write your answer on a sheet of paper in a way that shows the
structure of the ideas.

(Kindly use this template as your guide in answering the activity):

BIG IDEA: _________________________________________
TOPIC: ____________________________________________
DETAIL: ___________________________________________
TOPIC: ____________________________________________
DETAIL: ___________________________________________
TOPIC: ____________________________________________
DETAIL: ___________________________________________
DETAIL: ___________________________________________

A good apology has two parts

It’s difficult to accept and say out loud that you hurt someone
Apologizing can be hard
Admit what you did
The Importance of a Good Apology
Apologizing helps the other person know you care
Apologizing is healing
Ask what you can do to make it better

Were you able to identify the topics and details? How about the Big Idea?
Take note:
An informative essay follows a pattern, or structure, to make it easier
for the reader to follow along. Informative essays start with a big idea or main
idea.

3
The Big idea or Main idea in an
informative essay is a complete sentence;
it includes the topic and what the author
wants to say about it and it sums up the
author’s primary message. If the author
states the main idea in his paragraph it is
called a “topic sentence” or a sentence
that introduces a paragraph by
presenting the one topic that will be the
focus of that paragraph.
All the information is divided into
topics, and those are shaped into
paragraph. The topic is the general subject of a paragraph or essay, simple
and described with just a word or a phrase.
Each paragraph has 2-4 details that give more information about the
topic.
What is the purpose of the text?

Remember:
Informative writing shares information in an informative instead of
persuasive manner. What that means is a writer whose purpose is to “inform”
should be delivering their message to their readers without bias (opinion).
They should be educating their readers on a particular topic by providing
information and accurate facts, but without the added goal of achieving a
specific reaction or change within the readers.
Because of these guidelines, informative writing tends to serve five basic
purposes:

1. Sharing new information with readers

-Introducing your reader to information he or she may not be
familiar with.

Examples:

Ø A Brief History of the Philippines

Ø The Importance of Regular Daily Exercise

2. Describing a process

4
-Walking your reader through a step-by-step process or
procedure.

Examples:

Ø How to open a bank account

Ø How to Donate Blood

3. Clarifying a concept
-Looking at the similarities and/or differences between seemingly
related topics.

Examples:

Ø Clarifying the main differences between a metaphor and simile

Ø Summarizing the similarities and differences between freshwater
and saltwater fish

4. Giving an explanation of why or how

-Introducing the reader to how or why something work the way it
does.

Examples:

Ø What most plants need to survive and grow

Ø Simple steps that can be taken to overcome bad habits

5. Detailing parts of a greater whole

-Offering details and clarification on smaller parts of a greater
whole or topic.

Examples:

Ø Describing the main parts of an engine

Ø Outlining a few steps to successful financial control

What do I do to write an informative essay?

1. Select an appropriate topic.

2. Research and gather ideas about the subject. See what you already know about
the subject as you uncover other areas you still need to research.
5
1. 3. Make a list of these important facts. Be sure all the facts are accurate. This is a
good time to craft your thesis statement as well as a topic sentence for each fact
you'd like to include.
2.
3. 4. Create an outline that will organize your facts in a logical way. After this, you'll
be ready to make your first draft.
4.
5. Sampl e Outli ne:

I. Introduction
A. Introductory Statement:
II. Body
A. Supporting Topic 1
Ø Details 1
Ø Details 2
Ø Details 3
B. Supporting Topic 2
Ø Details 1
Ø Details 2
Ø Details 3
C. Supporting Topic 3
Ø Details 1
Ø Details 2
Ø Details 3
III. Conclusion
A. Closing Statement

6. 5. Write your essay based on the outline you've created. Ensure that one section
naturally flows into the next.
7.
8. 6. Proofread and edit your work. Editing is an important step for any writing
project. Reading your essay out loud will help you notice areas where your writing
may be unclear or awkwardly worded. If possible, have someone else read your
essay and offer their ideas for improvement.
9.
7. Of course, don't forget to pay attention to grammar, punctuation, spelling,
capitalization, and other errors as well.

An essay outline is a short plan of your research paper. Here, you write
down the main idea of your essay and arrange all arguments into paragraphs
to make sure you won’t miss anything while writing.
Each essay needs Introduction, Body (paragraphs with arguments), and
Conclusion; so, a general format of your essay outline will include all these
components.

6
The beginning, otherwise known as the introduction, is your opportunity
to present your thesis statement and grab the attention of the reader. Your
thesis statement must be one sentence, making it very clear what the reader will
be informed about.
Use this opportunity to introduce the main idea, provide any pertinent
definitions, and briefly describe what will be covered. Above all else, the
introduction must clearly state what readers are about to explore. Be sure to
steer clear of any evidence of your opinion on the topic.

Body

The middle, otherwise known as the body, is your opportunity to expound

upon the thesis statement and grab the attention of the audience with solid facts,
statistics, statements, and other supporting details.

The body will be several paragraphs long, comprising the bulk of the essay.
This is where you'll provide further details about the main idea. Be sure you delve
deeply into every area previously outlined in the introduction.

Conclusion

The end, otherwise known as the conclusion, is your opportunity to

summarize the essay in a paragraph or two. It should spur the reader to want to
learn more about the topic. Be sure to reiterate the thesis statement clearly. In
your introduction, you may have laid out what would be covered in the essay.
Offer a sentence or two reiterating what was learned about those topic areas.

After that, offer up a few closing remarks that gloss over the most
important elements. End on a high note, encouraging your readers to learn more
or contemplate the most important elements of your essay. You may even pose a
rhetorical question.

Did you find it interesting? If it is so, then let’s continue discovering.

7
ACTIVITY 2: Outline an Informative Paragraph
DIRECTION: Copy the paragraph below and underline each sentence using
the color about the parts of an informative essay mentioned above. Red for
Introduction, Yellow for Body, and Blue for Conclusion.

Bats use echolocation to navigate and find food in the dark. They make
sounds with their mouth or nose and listen for echoes. When they hear an
echo, they can determine the size, shape, or distance of an object—even a tiny
mosquito! However, humans can’t hear their echolocation noises because they
are so high pitched. Bats aren’t blind, but echolocation helps them find their
way around more easily in the dark.

Activity 6: Writing Learning Check

DIRECTIONS: Read the text below and respond to the prompt that follows.

Do you drink enough water each day? Our bodies need water to
survive. Our bodies are mostly made up of water. We need to replenish,
or replace, water each day. The human body uses water in many ways.
Water keeps the body’s temperature normal. It helps move waste
through the body. It helps keep our joints, like our elbows, knees, and
shoulders, moving smoothly. Every cell in our body needs water so it
can keep working properly.
We are hydrated when we drink enough water. If we don’t drink
enough water, our bodies become dehydrated. When this happens, our
bodies stop working properly.
Water helps our bodies in other ways, too. It helps with headaches,
and it helps us feel more energized. Also, it helps us to not overeat.
Sometimes we think that we are hungry, but we are really just thirsty.
When we drink enough water, it helps us to maintain, or keep, a healthy
weight. Water is also helpful with bad breath and bad moods.
There are many important benefits of water. Our bodies need clean
water to survive, so it is our job to drink enough each day.

Let Us Reflect

Have you been tasked with writing an informative essay? If the topic is
open, the first thing you must ask yourself is, "What interests me the most?"
This will make the task far less difficult. Take something you're already
knowledgeable about and share it with the world.
An informative essay is the best way to explain something complicated
- in an uncomplicated way. Even though you're (hopefully) writing on a topic
of interest to you, be sure to back up each claim with substantial facts and
statistics. Let the content speak for itself, inviting readers to learn more.
