RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines Product Overview

RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines is a RecoverPoint product that operates at the VM level and is
targeted at enterprises, mid-range customers, and service providers.
RecoverPoint for VMs enables users to protect virtual as well as private/hybrid cloud environments.
It also enables businesses to protect their virtualized environment more easily and benefit from the value
of virtualized environments, such as dynamism and automation.

RecoverPoint for VMs provides data protection with the following capabilities:

• Fully virtualized solution (replication engine and splitter)

• Hypervisor-based replication with per VM granularity
• Test, failover, failback, and production recovery to any point-intime per VM
• Management that is integrated into the virtualized environment, for vAdmin/vCloud Admin
(Integrated management with VMware’s vCenter GUI)
• Storage agnostic (SAN, NAS, DAS, vSAN)
• Enterprise-level functionality
• Flexible deployment topologies

RecoverPoint for VMs addresses protection needs of a different audience. It moves up the protection
functionality in the customers’ stack, and handles protection in a VM-centric way, instead of using
storage centric protection. Hence its buyers and users are responsible for the virtual and the cloud
infrastructure, not just the storage infrastructure.

RecoverPoint for VMs is an excellent fit for many market segments, starting with low-end IT shops (who
are buying through partners), continuing with commercial and mid-range customers, and up to Enterprise
customers.

RecoverPoint for VMs is also the building block to offer additional DR products or solutions to service
providers, especially DR in and to the cloud.

This guide describes the RecoverPoint for VMs ordering and licensing process. It details the ordering
rules and options, licensing rules and processes, typical use cases, terminology, and FAQs.

RecoverPoint for VMs System Architecture

This section illustrates the RecoverPoint for VMs system architecture and gives a high-level overview of
key factors in the RecoverPoint for VMs terminology.

Remote: The following diagram details the RecoverPoint for VMs system replication architecture in
remote replication mode.

RecoverPoint for VMs Licensing Models

Overview
• RecoverPoint for VMs may be ordered on a per-VM basis.
• When RecoverPoint for VMs is ordered on a per-VM basis, a license is required for all protected
VMs.
• Per-VM licenses may be purchased as a perpetual licensing model.
• The availability of the licensing models of RecoverPoint for VMs depends on the way
RecoverPoint for VMs is ordered.

Licensing Guide
The following guidelines apply to per-VM licensing:

• In case of per-VM basis license, only the production VMs are protected.

6
Internal
InternalUse
Use- -Confidential
Confidential
• All RecoverPoint for VMs clusters in the production vCenter share the same license pool.
• The license is locked to a vCenter ID (vCenter Server UUID) and not a RecoverPoint Cluster ID.
• RecoverPoint for VMs clusters obtain their license from the vCenter Server license pool.
• If RecoverPoint for VMs does not recognize a licensed vCenter ID format, the license is not
activated.
• When removing a license from a production vCenter, if the license removal may cause the
system to exceed the maximum number of VMs that are allowed, RecoverPoint for VMs issues a
warning.
• On reaching the license capacity limit, users are not able to protect new VMs. Replication of
existing production VMs continues as usual.
• No additional license is required for multi-copy. Local replication and remote replication as well
as multiple remote copies are supported with the same license.
• Fan-out/Fan-in (multisite) is supported with the same license at no additional charge.
• The license file acts as a dynamic pool across all RecoverPoint for VM clusters that are
registered on the same vCenter. When a consistency group is protected, the number of available
VM licenses decreases by the number of VMs in that consistency group. When protection is
removed from a consistency group, the available license pool increases by the same number of
VMs.
• Failover – reversed protection requires no additional license on DR site vCenter. A protected VM
of the ESXi server of that protected VM are associated with a production vCenter. This
association is created when the consistency group is defined and is maintained even when a VM
has failed over.
• Bi-directional protection – License each site vCenter separately according to the number of VMs
to be protected on that vCenter.
• There is no requirement to order vRPAs.
Note: vCenter Server UUID is a unique identification of the virtual machine that the vCenter
Server runs on.

Pricing Guidelines
The following pricing guidelines apply:

• Pay only for protected production VMs.

• The pricing in case of per-VM licensing model is tiered pricing. The VMs price tier is based on the
total number of productions VMs.
• VM capacity tiers are available with no limit on the maximum VM capacity. Minimum VM capacity
is 15 VMs for the account regardless of the number of vCenters a customer has.
• No additional charge exists for local replication – local or remote replication for the same VMs is
supported with the same license.
• No additional charge exists for multi-copy per VM. It is supported with the same license.

Software Use Rights to be attached to all software

from DSA/Gii
It is important that we share with our customers how we define the various aspects of their equipment
purchase. You must include a copy of the following PDF to all Storage and Data Protection quotes from
DSA/Gii—this is to provide customers with the SW use rights definitions and legal requirements.

https://www.delltechnologies.com/content/dam/digitalassets/active/en/unauth/manual-warranty-
informations/products/data-protection/h2483-sw-use-rights.pdf
Sales must add a link to the use rights document (link above) to the quote notes for all new Storage and
Data Protection Products, so that customers can see a clear definition of usage rights that corresponds
with each two-digit code at the end of the SKU description for each SW SKU quoted.
How customers will use this information
• SW SKUs for these products include a two-digit Code (such as CA, IA, IC, etc.) at the end of the
SKU description such as “Data Protection Suite for VMware 2TB AVE H Enabler=CA”
• The Dell EMC Software Use Rights document includes summary (page 1) and detailed description
(page 2- 8) of the terms of use for each two-digit code, including “CA” from the example above
